In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm listening to The Seven Angels by Avantasia. This is my first reaction to this supergroup from Germany, and I was not disappointed. The narrative, production, composition, and performance are all top notch. Enjoy!

The whole story of the opera (part 1 and 2) happens between the real world and the world in our minds called "Avantasia" ("someone call us fantasy"). Gabriel is the main character, who is saving the world in our minds from closing, so that we can still get there. This song specifically happens into that world, not in the real. And all the characters, except Gabriel, are the inhabitants of that fantasy worl

YESSSSSSSSS THANK YOU!!! I have a little personal story for this song: As a big time fan of Edguy and in particular Avantasia, I took the first chance to see them live in Milano when I was 14 yo. Back then it was 2011. Tobias Sammet's music has been of great hispiration to me and as a fellow musician I had decided to send him an email, just to say how grateful I was for his music. But I had one big request. My ultimate, greatest dream was to be able to hear the whole "The Seven Angels". I just thought it wouldn't hurt to try, but the chances that he would even come to know about one random email sent by a random kid were pretty none, in fact I myself forgot about it. Then the day of the concert came. One of the best experiences in my life, I just stood there with my jaw dropped the whole time. Usually Avantasia play only the Chorus of "The Seven Angels" as the final part of a medley, so when I first heard the Synths from the Intro.... Oh boy my eyes just lit up like fire! And as the song progressed, approaching the end of the chorus I thought to myself "surely they will stop here"... At that first keyboard note that started the next Section of the song, I turned around immediately looking my dad in the eyes and he was already there shouting "OH BOY THEY ARE STILL GOING!!!" I've had the pleasure and opportunity to watch Avantasia live two other times, and have seen plenty of KZbin videos, but since then never have I seen them once perform the whole song live again I just like to think that maybe my email reached the right eyes at the right time :)

A great suggestion after this is to check out André Matos (one of the singers in this song). He was an incredible brazillian singer that unfortunately passed away in 2019. We brazillians are very proud of him, he is known here as the "maestro", and in São Paulo June 8th is officially known as the "Day of Metal" in rememberance of his death. He had two "main" bands, first is Angra which is probably the greatest brazillian metal band of all time (along with Sepultura), and the second one is Shaman which was a later work with other original members from Angra, both are amazing. From Shaman you should definately check the song "Fairy Tale" (do the LIVE version, it's one of the greatest performances I've ever seen) and from Angra you should check the song "Carolina IV" or any other from the Holy Land album which is heavily inspired by brazillian music. Say hello to your brazillian fans :D

Thanks again Doug for the great reaction and analysis. Avantasia is a great project, I especially love the first two Metal Opera albums, which I literally grew up with. The ample use of organs and choir singing, giving a bit of a ”church music” sound, really suits the story. Funnily enough, we witnessed even some head-nodding action from Doug while the double-kick drums were going on, you’re turning into a metalhead slowly but surely. I did always understand your comments on the double kick drums, it can be a bit much especially if the mix is too heavy on the drums. But it serves it’s purpose as a forward driving force, giving often a sense of speed or urgency to the music. But it works best when it’s not the whole song. Like in this piece, the use of double kick drums is quite tasty.

Avantasia's The Metal Opera Parts 1 and 2 are my favorites of their entire catalog. They bring me great joy in listening. I still play both albums several times each year. They flow very nicely, every track is great, and they put me in a good place emotionally. They are among my all-time favorite albums.

I went to their concert pretty much blindfolded when they came to Argentina at Obras closed stadium with Amanda, Andre and everyone else. I used to buy tickets to random international metal artists, some I knew quite well (Epica, Nightwish, Dream Theater, etc) and others I knew little or nothing (Theatre of Tragedy, Lacuna Coil, Sonata Arctica, and Avantasia). I didn't know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised by the repertoire. I believe (memory fails after 15 years or more) this was the last song they played and boy, between the marijuana smoke around me, the three hours of concerts, the lack of air and the melody it was a celestial experience. You went from mosh pits to waving your arms in slow motion all in the same song. Not sure if I was tearing by the time it ended but I wouldn't be surprised if I did.

Nice, I loved that you reacted to the older, more power metal material. Not that the new stuff is bad but for me is missing something. I'm glad you liked it and are able to appreciate the "simplicity" of power metal, cause it can be a lot of fun. I always think you may not like power or thrashy stuff due to the drums but there are pieces like this one that has enough variety and tempo changes to make it more bearable for you.

I would love to see a reaction to Galneryus's Angel of Salvation. It's based on a classic concerto (i won't spoiler which to see if you figure it out by yourself otherwise look it up after the reaction). I would suggest the live version on youtube since the video version is shortened and the live version is very well mixed and performed with (at least part of) an actual orchestra.

I knew that this day would come, and this was the logic song to start with Avantasia. Now you can continue with Sign of the cross, The Great Mystery, The Scarecrow or Let the Storm Descent Upon You. They are all long songs with lots of sections. A little less "opera" I think, but still great songs.

Doug just found your channel through this video. If this is really you listening to that song for the first time your hearing capability is amazing, and I don't mean just telling the keys and chords. Am a big avantasia fan myself, listened to this song hundreds of times and always thought around 15:00 in your video sounds "familiar". Palchebel never came to my mind there even though I if course know canon in D🤦🏻‍♂️

I get the impression power metal might not always be the most interesting to you with its repeated choruses, and lack of variety in keys/progressions etc. But as a fan I'm certainly glad to see it on the channel. I've seen a few suggestions for Ghost In The Moonlight by Avantasia and would absolutely echo that recommendation. I would also suggest the title track to Theatre of Salvation by Edguy (Tobias' other band) which is a bit more of an epic with a little bit more than just verse-chorus-solo going on. I'm always reminded of the Jim Steinman influence on Avantasia, especially that piano driven section after the solos in this piece. So I'm going to take the opportunity to again suggest doing some of his compositions. I think 'Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young' from the Streets of Fire soundtrack would make a really interesting listen. If nothing else to hear a pop/rock song end with a canon, and the sort of interweaving recurring motifs.

I truly love your reaction and breakdown of the music. I’ve watched all your tool, opeth, and Metallica reactions and love them all. It’s great hearing from a master composer and seeing how you breakdown the progressions it’s super insightful. I’d love to see you do some reactions on darkest hour they are a phenomenal metal band in my opinion. They have some great instrumentals I think you’d really enjoy. Veritas Aequitas, Terra Solaris are a couple that come to mind. They have multiple others I just can’t think of them off the top of my head. In flames has some masterpiece instrumentals aswell I’d like you to break down if you ever get the chance. Regardless I truly enjoy your videos. Keep it up! 🤙🤙
