From what I’ve seen from the Classical education approach is that’s how it works. They teach only the “facts” to the younger grade. And then when they move to the next phase they add more information to each thing they are studying. They believe since kids are so naturally good at memorizing things they capitalize on that. But like you said I can’t imagine that for the amount of money you paid. That’s crazy town!! 🤣

Thanks for sharing, I'm sure this has helped and will help many! I’m excited to see how you love CC from home! I know Dina from Pursuing Peace has done that and it looks like a lot of fun! I think it really does make a difference with the community of ladies and whether or not you have homeschool friends outside of CC. Since I didn’t have anyone, even in my church, who homeschooled, I found the community of women and kids a huge blessing. I totally agree that the memory work is weird with how they have 4yo learning it, but the other half hours - art, science experiments, and presentation time were amazing parts for my kiddos, since I didn’t do those things at home. All the best this year, and I look forward to gleaning ideas and wisdom from you this year. 💜

thanks for watching! Yes, Dina's video was the first I watched when I considered doing CC from home. We are only on week 3 so far and it's going well!

Thank you for sharing.. Truly appreciate your taking the time to be here, and share.. We've heard from so many Homeschoolers who've had very similar experiences. I love that w/ just about any curricula..there's all sorts of ways to tweak it, and enjoy it the way one sees fit.. (=

The idea of new grammar review at Community Day Foundations is to just introduce the grammar, the words they've probably never heard before. I've always heard it referenced as a memory peg. And as they grow, they hang more pieces of information on that particular peg. But then they've already got the basic terms down so they aren't starting from scratch having to learn the basic terminology. But I totally understand what you're saying, you can do it from home just using the guidebook as your spine! I love how CC simplifies things as far as curriculum goes, knowing what to discuss and then we just add songs as a books. Filling in the gaps....yes! We're all learning together. Definitely visit a community day ahead of time as i can only imagine how they vary. We are lucky to have a robust community that i feel is valuable and worthwhile. I agree about the 4 year old crew though... just let them play. Im tutoring 4/5 year old this year and I keep it really light and low pressure. Yet they are still able to memorize so much. The mommas just add in books or any other related content at home to flesh out the memory work. At our community if a child is 4 or older they have to be in a class and can no longer be in the nursery. So most of the Littles are just younger siblings. I also highly recommend sitting in on a Challenge level class. Blown away at these kids and it helped me understand why we're "just" memorizing things at this point. (I'm posing this comment to help others if they are interested in more!) Have you posted about which math or reading curriculum you add in at home? My son is 6.5 so I think about the same age. Excited to see how yall progress this year! And a HS grad?! That's like a unicorn! So awesome.

Our family considered CC prior to the pandemic simply for the community aspect because 2 of my kids specifically are very social and I thought it would be beneficial. However - after learning about some of the ethical issues with CC as well as some gaping holes in the curriculum, I’m glad the pandemic steered us away from CC. I do really love a classical approach to education, but I truly think there are better ways to accomplish it.

ethical issues? can you elaborate? And what specific gaping holes? I believe that there's no one perfect curriculum that teaches you everything you need to know, but I'd love to hear your thoughts. We are doing CC Foundations at home this year and I kind of like having a little more freedom and filling in holes where I see them.

To avoid writing a novel (and also acknowledging that every community is different and there are absolutely some doing it wonderfully according to state laws) I’ll just mention a couple of brief points. CC is a for-profit franchise but typically meets in a non-profit church which puts the church in a position of probable tax evasion. They’ve worked hard to cover this issue. There are also many reports from former directors of CC leadership being dishonest and outright telling the directors to cover things up and lie. Of course everyone will have a different experience and perspective, this is just the conclusion I’ve come to personally. As far as curriculum - you’ve mentioned a lot of what I was referring to. However, looking forward to the challenge years - in my opinion their “rigorous” program is a lot of busy work that focuses on performance and perfection. Again - these are my opinions based on my experience and research. This is in no way intended to judge anyone who has a different viewpoint or experience! ❤️
