After reuploading the old tutorials it's now time to launch straight into new work, and we're bringing out the big guns right away. Here's my attempt at Tommy's version of this crowdpleaser. A quick note for those who commented on the premiere announcement and now notice those comments are gone: I'm very sorry for the missing messages, but I spotted a really stupid typo and had to delete and reupload the whole thing. 🤦♂️

I sat in the front row, and had a short interaction with Tommy when he came to South Milwaukee recently. What a show! I love this rendition of Classical Gas... I own Mason Williams remake with Chip Davis when it came out years ago. I would love to learn to play it, but it is going to be down the road a bit. The technical skill you just demonstrated is amazing. Wonderful job. For me, maybe over the next four years I'll be able to master bits of it. And then I'll retire.
@TimVanRoy3 жыл бұрын
Looking forward to retiring will only make you age faster Gary 🤣 If you can learn to enjoy the process of learning and practising songs you'll have a lot more chance of success! And you might be surprised: apart from that blazing opening lick, most of the verse and chorus isn't that extremely difficult!

Tim, hi! How are you, how is your health? I've watched this video many times already. You play this song really well, it takes a lot of practice. And thank you again for arranging an interview with Uncle Tommy. I didn't learn English well at school. But recently I found out that in our Yandex browser you can translate videos automatically and listen to them. And it's so cool! I listen to a lot of different Tommy interviews now. What else did I want to ask you. Tell me, is it necessary to play with your fingers like Tommy when we play his songs? What am I talking about? For example, you play his songs and almost never use the ring finger in your right hand, just like Tommy. I play with all my fingers, like classical guitarists. Should I leave it as it is, or should I retrain? I just don't want to waste time when it's better to play like Tommy. Do you understand?
@TimVanRoy2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sergei! Let's all be very grateful for the translation software. Without Google Translate I never would have understood any of your comments! The use of the ring is mostly scaled back because of the position your picking hand takes on when playing with a thumbpick. If you have to mute the bass strings the picking hand is leaning sideways, and that makes it a bit harder to use the ring finger often. If you are using a classical playing posture then, by all means, stick to using the ring finger! It wouldn't make sense to leave it out then...

Hi Godis! Unfortunately it will remain like this for the future: half of each tutorial for free on KZbin, and the other parts on Patreon (and later also on a website). This is because of an agreement with Tommy's management as not to torpedo his own teaching business...

This video is about to go nuclear. I'd be interested to know your practice schedule. How often do you play/learn to take it all in? Love the ending Haha
@TimVanRoy3 жыл бұрын
When learning a song I do most of the practicing when transcribing the song. I always start from scratch and go over it from start to finish. After that it is a matter of getting it up to speed, which was surprisingly easy for this song (apart from the middle section with the Ventures/Elton John song). I usually work on three songs at the same time: transcribing one, practicing another up to speed and recording the third one.
