Thanks for introducing this!! I’ve had a few students who couldn’t grow nails due to school dress code, and this might be just what they need. It could be great for older folks who may have more brittle nails too… I was a bit skeptical til I heard you play, great work! Ultimately, I think the responsibility to make it sound good is with the players. And don’t let any elitists stop you - as long as no one gets hurt, people can play guitar however they want 😆

To be honest, I find they work better tucked under a bit of natural nail. But we are all different, especially when it comes to fingerpicks! You've got to try stuff & not be quick to reject a new type. I almost gave up on the Bumblebee thumb pick in the first couple of minutes but now it's my main one. Now that I am happy with the thumb pick I can use the Alaskas too. They are the ones for me. @@soundguitar

Two tips from a fellow versatility specialist with naturally soft weak brittle nails: Use Healthy Hoof nail treatment every day for at least a year, and you will notice a huge improvement in the strength and durability of your natural nails. Takes a long time to see the difference, but I can attest that it worked for me, and the difference is big enough that I’d call it life changing (not sponsored) Switch to flat wound strings on your electric guitars, the smooth wrap makes a giant difference to nail wear. Hope that helps. I’m going to try a set of these picks out. Thanks for the video

I'm missing the tip of my right index finger and have self-taught bad habits. So I seek out a teacher for help. I brought some of my concerns with clicking and the cumbersome feeling of the Alaska picks adaptive phase, and my difficulty getting a clean sound especially on rest strokes to my teacher and he glossed them over. This video has honestly made the difference between totally committing to classical guitar, going all in whole-heartedly or not. I would avoid rest strokes entirely because the scarring where my finger isn't would hurt. Or play really quiet with skin and no nails or replacing the i fingering which is awkward, and this hurt my confidence to play loud. When watching that calibration excersise it all clicked into place. I made a little foam prosthetic attached to the Alaska pick to stop the buzz of playing the same note twice without muting it with the flesh of the finger which i can now do without pain. I can finally get consistently beautiful tone, and project feel totally satisfied with my musicality. I played a classical basic greensleves gorgeously, in a way that had previously been impossible for me. I teared up a little. :D Thank you. If someone disparages picks in classical, just offer to remove a finger joint. Hahaha. It's the oldest trap of humanity: my way/norm is correct and only the right sort merit entry.

Thanks for this video, it's really helpful. I've been playing classical guitar for about 40 years. I'd like to learn to play the piano but I want to ensure I use the correct technique, i.e. no nails on the right hand. I think the use of these picks, if one can eventually adjust to playing the guitar without any significant issues, and it seems that you can, is an excellent idea. I’ll give them a go.

I've used these on electric guitar and they worked well. I had to trim my picks as they were way to tight uncut. Definitely have to take some time smoothing them but with the picks it's a one time thing instead of constant upkeep that real fingernails require. Cheers,

Beautiful playing! This is a very helpful video, more helpful than most that talk about using fingerpicks. The pro/con list is very accurate from my experience. I may give these another try, although I gave up after a couple of months playing a couple of years ago. The squeeze was too uncomfortable after even just a half-hour of playing. Regarding if it's ok to use fingerpicks for classical music, I'm of the belief that there are no sacred cows when it comes to making music. Classical folks (like me) can get all up on our feelings about the "proper" way to do something, because we are indoctrinated from the start that way, that there is a "right" and a "wrong" way to do things. After all, the "proper" way to do something is "proper" because it has centuries of history of working well. However, the goal with making music isn't to "do things properly", it's to express yourself through music. If you like the sound you create from using fingerpicks, that's all that counts. If you're able to create beautiful music using fingerpicks, keep doing that.

Well this was an interesting video and a subject that took me a while to find out what I wanted. My solution came from an older man that sets up new guitars in a shop that I bought my guitar and had it set up for me. (With help from the man). A plectrum is difficult for me because of arthritis and finger playing seemed to work so okay, I was happy. One problem, chalk nails so keep the nails short and the finger tips and thumb was the advice from the man. My guitar was set up for playing with thumb and fingers and the demonstration from the man works as something to go for. But I did enjoy the video and it’s all choices we make and stick to. Thanks Jared.

I also use A-Pk's (but am more of an intermediate level player). Since returning to playing in 2017 I have bounced between real nails (when I could keep them - I have very brittle and crappy sounding nails), Guitar Player Nails (Glue on nails), and A-Pk's. I have finally settled on A-Pk's. I have never noticed any excessive tendency to buzz when playing. But I do find that I need to trim the part that makes string contact. You have to do some trimming where the device wraps around the finger (a comfort thing) for sure, and I have one additional problem. The area where my nail exits the finger is much more flat than is the profile of the part the slips under the nail. So sometimes I have problems keeping enough nail to use A-Pk's. I once (true story) used Glue On nails to create enough nail to use my A-Pk's (m finger, IIRC). That was strange. I also tend to leave a layer of silk wrap on all my RH nails to avoid losing nail to the point that I can't use A-Pk's. I use size XL on p, M on i-m-a, and S on c. I use c but mostly just for the occasional 5 note chord when I play some of my own arrangements. Great playing and very useful video, BTW.

I haven't tried Alaska picks but now at least I know their name and what to expect. I haven't really gotten used to traditional thumb pick so far as it feels weird. I tried hybrid picking but would need a lot more practice incorporating my pinky into the mix. I can't wait to hear why you cut all your nails off and how that's going!

Great informative video. I tried these once but ended up getting frustrated with them for a few reasons and using glued-on-fake nails to work the gigs. I'm thinking about trying them again with a fresher perspective. I have a nasty four-fecta: electric guitar playing (trying to level-up my hybrid picking), a newly developed thumb-nail-splitting abnormality, piano-dabbling, and food-service/meat-cutting as a day job prevent me from growing nails. Nails are, oddly enough, one of the reasons why I ended up sacrificing the dream of being a great classical guitarist and pursuing a more well-rounded path.

Hi Jared, thank you for this informative video. I've been using just one Alaska pick on my 'a' finger for a while, because I just can't grow the nail on that finger without it splitting even before it grows out of the nail bed. This seems to be a good compromise and after trying it for a while, I've got used to it. I hate sticking artificial nails on. I haven't tried an extra large size of the pick for the thumb as I haven't been able to find one yet. My other problem is that for a strange reason, I haven't been able to use my index finger properly for around nine months. It tends to flex in the middle joint almost permanently, which makes it difficult to straighten it to pluck a string. By the time I have straightened it, I tend to miss the note I intended to play! So as a compromise, I am in the process of re-fingering all the pieces I play, to avoid the index finger as much as possible. It's quite doable but quite often you do need all three fingers with the thumb for four-note chords, like in some Villa Lobos pieces, or jazz/latin stuff, or my own pieces. Your use of the pinkie has inspired me to experiment with it. It will probably be very difficult to completely switch to 'm', 'a' and pinkie permanently, especially for playing fast arpeggios, but maybe I could learn to use the pinkie every now and then to get me out a tricky fingering situations, although I find the tone of the picked little finger quite thin on the classical guitar, but still good enough to get you out of trouble! I do agree with your point about the volume you get from these picks, especially on the 'a' finger. Great stuff.

Thank you, I've been thinking of buying these picks and experimenting with them, but also curious about tone production. After using nails for years, I decided to cut them because I want to practice right hand tapping more. It still feels strange for me, because of the tone and that I used to use my nails when strumming. So I thought about finger picks (but I might still have to remove it when tapping. I just want to tap and strum in the same song sometimes...) I don't think it's sacrilegious. Maybe because I always want to hear music that experiment with something new. I'll waiting for the next video!

Great question! I think you should simultaneously try nails and the piks. Because you can put your nail behind the plastic (which also makes it more secure) you can have nails while using these -- because the technique is the same it's helpful to try both, and if you're going to go with the piks long term it's good to have a tiny bit of experience at least with real nails. Hope that helps! Thanks for asking - Jared

Thank for this video, it was very helpful. I have been using them for years but I heavily modify mine. And when sanding them smoother do you also not ramp them like people do with real nails? And lastly, for a side view how far beyond the tip of the finger (flesh) does the alaska pik extend?
@soundguitar2 жыл бұрын
Correct, I don't clip them at all. I also don't really shape, I just make sure they're totally smooth every time I play. They stock out quite a bit beyond my finger. It's definitely not the only way to do it, with good technique adjustments one can make them sound good with many approaches or shapes - this is just my way and I adapt my playing to make them work and sound right to me. Shorter or shapes can work very well also. ** Jared

Too noisy, clicking and metallic. Not the best choice for recording!.As a classical guitarist (teacher and performer) myself I can tell that you have a very solid and technically sound right hand technique.I don't doubt that those undesirable sounds are a product of the contact between the Alaska pik and the string while it's vibrating. The issue is resolved by getting contact with the flesh of the finger tip and the pik simultaneously.Hard to do when the pik is to thick and it gets to close between the strings (the space between the 2nd and 1st string, ect). The only way an artificial nail could work, technically wise and sound/tone wise, is to invent a very thin but durable nail tip which could be inserted on the tip of the nail (not on the flesh of the finger).

IMHO: I WOULD THINK THAT JUST USING SOME SORT OF GLUE-ON NAILS, WOULD BE MUCH MORE "NATURAL FEELING, AND COMFORTABLE ,......THAN ANYTHING THAT "SQUEEZES" ONTO THE FINGERTIPS!...

Those are only decent if you’re willing to relearn your picking hand
