Jason’s rant was perfect. His point about it being sometimes harder to appeal to millions as opposed to appealing to a smaller audience of critical thinkers is so true. Simple and catchy does not mean bad, as different music serves different purposes
@wirdqoingqydink2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree, that was so appropriate, and since they mentioned the "intricacies of music" which arguably is a natural characteristic of classical compositions, the way Blacklabel producers composed this piece is their way of intricate. Everybody's reaction was really fun to watch.
@AsianPopStop2 жыл бұрын
I'd thought the same thing and when I realized Jason was going to say that I freaked out--I feel like it's something reactors/reviewers/critics rarely keep in mind. While intricacy or complexity is not bad per se, it's not always good either. A song like this is trying to do something very different than a classical piece like La Campanella, and they both do what they are meant to do very well.
@clairecarson3132 жыл бұрын
@SonderDAze X I disagree. It's definitely HARDER to appeal to the mass audience because just like what he said, even if you did the most complicated thing, and people don't even realize it, what's the point?

@mygeumseong2 жыл бұрын
@SonderDAze X if it's easier to appeal to a mass audience, why do big name artists often fail to put out another huge hit? why do so many fairly well known artists with all the resources in the world so often fail to really hit it big? creating something that cements itself into the public consciousness is incredibly difficult. sometimes artists get lucky and there is a degree of "right time right place" involved, but to consistently achieve that level of popular appeal is not a simple task.

i definitely agree with kevin and jason that this isn't a song that's meant to be analyzed in the same way that y'all are usually able to dig into songs on this channel. it's classic rap, the sample sets a vibe and a steady beat for the rappers to play with different cadences over top. i feel like yg has been struggling with giving the girls their flowers and just letting the talent shine through, so this is really, really refreshing for me. i know this isn't a place to go on a tangent about mismanagement, i just wanna say that it's my favorite track from blackpink in *years* because it feels like artistic growth instead of spectacle and the pared back production is definitely a factor in that.

At first I was also a bit disappointed, because not so long ago we had Feel my rhythm. But then I realized that they just made it true to YG label, which is more about swag and hip-hop than about music theory intricacies. There was a time when the songs in rapsody genre were popular: they were exactly a short looped piece from classics and a rap over it. Makes sense that they've chosen this approach. I love the comment about comparison to Paganini! Didn't think about it at all, but I remember some people compared him to popular musicians: the way the pieces were more understandable to ordinary people, the way he toured. Thank you for the analysis! You guys become better and better. And the editing adds a lot of fun and clarity.

Shut Down is a tooootally different thing than Feel my rhythm - and sadly that some ppl always tend to COMPARE to the the 1st example of something they heard which is kind of WRONG, cause other things can be quite different even if using the same or simmilar idea. If it's about comparing with other k-pop songs made with sampling classical pieces, it would be Cherry Bullet - Hands Up which sampled Fur Elise, the closest one, most simmilar in terms of vibe and choice of piece and mixing. Now> 1) Shut Down is supposed to be Dancy / Catchy / Repeat ON song, with the vibe ''I wanna jump to it all day and feel badass". For such songs u can't use many sections of one calssical piece, if sampling, since the vibe will be lost and song can become draggy losing it's purpose. 2) it's HIP HOP based song, while Feel my rhythm was opposite. Shut Down just made most amazing thing - bringing together very well blended Hip Hop vibe, Glamorous fire on of a classical piece like La Campanellea, and k-pop feel which totally could be felt here (and probably because> 1) composers/producers were Korean artists only, 2) Korean lyrics were as much important as English parts). 3) IDEA - this time idea was using just a motif, and even - part of a motif, actually! But how to use it to not be boring? yea loop. but not enough. So what's done here? It is the right choice of cut in the motif which will be used, well blended with key change for a half tone to point out macabre savage feel - what concept of song and lyrics suggests. Not only that the cut was done at the right time, but after putting loop it kinda drives you wanting to hear it more and more time - why? you EXPECT RESOLUTIONN - which comes finally before chorus. 4) rhythm + meter! - yeah they slowed it down a bit to fit lyrics, and it did win the vibe. 6/8 is hard actually to make into a pop song and especially into a upbeat badass catchy dansy and darky song. Slowing down 6/8 It made the motif even more stand out crossing with hip-hop korean style tune. 5) ACCENTS! - this is now rlly interesting. Cause actually well choice of words from Korean and English made it like lyrics flowing with the beat, it felt like it came of with those strong accents on every 3rd point of 6/8. And words chosen have similarity with ends and starts - it is like blend of sound of words in both languages. 6) use of sound effects layers etc - done without overdoing whole sound image. Even highest tones in instrumental werent killing ears. Violin was on point cause the sound depicts like recorded LIVE sound. 7) interesting work on background sound - despite motif repetition all the time, you can hear use of various violin techniques (pizzicato effect, ricoshe, etc) 8) image of popularity but badass and devilishnes - Paganini was popular star at his era, and he was loved as much as he was despised and cursed. He was made for entertainment and touring, much more maybe than Liszt - as one popular star back then too, in field of piano. Blackpink kinda relates to it. Also / when we say classical music we actually forget that it was popular music before / only after romanticism started to be divided into high class art music cutting ties with popular music. 9) I have much more to say about Shut Down and it's unique quality, but i rlly don't have time, maybe later I'll edit comment since this was written in hurry ... have a nice day~ and enjoy SHUT DOWn

@chloe-kh3oe2 жыл бұрын
YESSSS, YG always like to keep it clean and straight-forward with their instrumentals. That's just their brand. SM is the most experimental one, and that is their musical branding. I think Shut Down being a little different to their other tracks is the statement itself. And that's why, in a musical standpoint, it'd really look like there is really nothing much to it. It really is simple compared to the other titles and they actually did not have a switch-up moment in here, which they are known for. Heck, they don't even have a bombastic outro on this one.
@YGSTAN062 жыл бұрын
@oceana311 mediocre?! What😬 a long time ygstan I disagree. Look at the history of yg music. There are many different genres and mixed genres. YG doesn't play by the rule. They make music that caters to the style YG artists have. To say this is mediocre based on taste is sad to hear.

Very true! However, them 2 tracks are at different levels tho lol, FMR just hit so hard but so elegantly at the same time, it was extremely well packaged and the girls' jobs at the studio for recording were absolutely fantastic. And this is thing, RV's music was never to be only flawless, and soft or something but also kinda 'dark' (hiddenly), and it was the other way around, even their 'dark side' or 'badass side' have got that elegance and charming. They have done all those things delicately, they just do it so differently :)i mean, it's Red Velvet. BP is a bit more about commercial and towarding to the public, the way they made their music was just the same over the years (both the company and the girls), anyways, their songs always make ppl hum and dance to very easily, which is kinda amazing. Hope that BP can learn more, try more and and do more in the future, they have enough fame rn lol.

i really like what kevin said about the classical sampling in shut down vs. feel my rhythm! they chose completely different genres, structures, and approaches to incorporating the pieces. shut down is a deliberately minimalist/stripped down track, and in that sense it uses the shorter sample very smartly with the trap/hip hop sounds(it feels very slick and clean). feel my rhythm is such a polar opposite in that they used a much larger part of the bach to include different harmonies and sections and it was generally a more maximalist approach. i don’t think either is necessarily better than the other!

This song is all about what BlackPink is saying to doubters and the production succeeded in conveying that.

I didn't know there was a sample, but like Jason(?) said, it's catchy and it's hype. That's enough for the masses as we're not all that cultured about music history to care about how much a piece was sampled and all that.
I'm coming back to this video after going to blackpink's concert a few weeks ago and i just wanna say, hearing Shut Down performed with a live band just adds a whole different flavor to the song entirely. I would imagine if they had a live violinist to play as well it would be a mindblowing experience. Nevertheless, the live band added so much to this song that the studio version didn't quite give. The musicians mentioned it feeling stagnant and repetitive and the live band rectified that and it felt so much more dynamic. Also i agree so much that this part of the piece being sampled is for the purpose of fitting into blackpink's vibe. It's pop and hip hop and supposed to be danceable and hype. I get that classical musicians would feel that sampling such a tiny part of the piece is kind of sad because it didn't do justice to the original, but again, that's not their goal. The goal isn't to shine a light on Paganini, it's to shine a light on blackpink and i do say they succeeded in that. Anyway, i rambled on longer than i intended. Sorry!!! But as always i enjoyed the reaction very much! Thanks ❤

I feel like Shut Down and Feel My Rhythm songs shouldnt be really comparable other than the fact that they both had classical samples. Feel My Rhythm was supposed to be an elegant, classical concept; more similar to the piece they sampled. Shut Down on the other hand is a classic hiphop track. the first few notes in Paganini's piece had great flow that rappers could easily follow the beat, like a lot of rappers do when they sample a repeating part of a specific song. the concepts of rv and bp are polar opposites so rv making use of a lot of their sample makes sense, whereas bp only needed a strong, yet fluid rhythm to follow, so them using majority of paganini's piece wouldn't really work
@m4l2282 жыл бұрын
They both used elegant pieces so thats the point. One used the full piece for a the whole song while blackpink reused the beginning until the end of the song.

The different perspectives are very good, but for me in most reviews I feel that someone specialized in both areas, classical music and old hip hop, is needed, because with the perspective of the two elements this song makes more sense and the reason Why was it composed this way?

Blackpink actually made younger people and people in general curious about classical music especially Paganini. Even though they only used a "fragment of a sentence", the song did its job. 1. Diss their haters, 2. It's catchy and hype and 3. People got curious! So no. The song is good as it is.
@astre83212 жыл бұрын
Lol are you even in twitter? The younger people keep on dragging down the already dead man who's in the 6th feet under the ground because they want to own the 2 bars of the piece. So no, it is not a better song if they let their fans disrespect the legends.

I love both Feel My Rhythm and Shut Down! I love RV and BP, truly. And I feel that they made use of their samples to convey the message and feel of their songs pretty successfully! FMR had a more airy, pretty, poppy feel to it. They were elegant and the focus was on the music. Whereas Shut Down is more hip-hop, which focuses more on repetitive beats, esp when accompanied by rap. It's a diss track, after all, so they wanted you to listen to the lyrics. I feel that if they used more of the piece, it would have distracted from the actual lyrics. I know I would've been too engrossed in noticing the different areas the violin went to, instead of actually listening to what they were saying 😂 so I think the repetitiveness served it's purpose to get into your head but not distract from the raps.
@Dina-zb2cv2 жыл бұрын
100 agree on your opinion 👍 whenever I want to study or sleep I used to listen FMR and when I go outside while in public transportation or dance time I always listen shut down lol, both using classical sample but with different genre and I love it.

There are a few words from them that hit hard like that of Jason mentioning about music that appeals to millions and appeals to few analysts, and that of Kevin mentioning that the point is to let the rappers do their things on top of the sampling. But the most epic words I agree the most here was the last one - RTTK: Do you know how they do it? GUY: No. If I do then I'll be working with them.

Honestly "Shut Down" was much better in my opinion than a lot of Blackpink's recent releases, but for me at least it suffers from a fatal flaw. The most interesting part of the piece is the Paganini sample. It dominates the song. Now, I do understand and to a certain extent agree with Jason's point, but it doesn't mean something which appeals to a wide audience is inherently good. If the music is supposed to make the lyrics stand out, then the lyrics need to stand out, and the only thing I remember about this song is the Paganini. Since it was mentioned in the video, this is not the case with Feel My Rhythm, where the song feels more like a true reinterpretation, rather than simply sampling a piece of it to use as a repetitive hook for what is essentially a rap song. Now, that idea can work, but as a rapper you have to be spitting bars, like straight fire. I just don't see that here. It's unimaginative lyrics, talking about how great they are. That is commercial, main stream rap/hip hop, and I have never found it appealing. I completely understand the notion of emphasizing the rap in rap, it's kind of the whole point, but then the rap itself needs to be good, which usually means spitting truth into the engines of hate(which is here, but in a cheap artificial way). The biggest problem I have, is the rap sounds an awful lot like the Paganini, with a few notes dropped out, so again what I'm remembering is the Paganini, not Blackpink. This speaks to poor production/composition, which I think has plagued Blackpink, with some notable exceptions(Lovesick Girls). Anyway, sorry for the rant, twas an insightful and entertaining video as always.

I think this is why I could never get in to them. I thought at first the music wasn’t my style, but I have some similar songs in my playlist. I think the main reason is their rap just doesn’t appeal to me. I have high expectations for the lyrics in rap, and I think everyone should. Personally, I think raps core is the lyrics and flow you put out. They just don’t have that for me. If their main concept is swag and being cool rap will be involved. I think I’m more dissatisfied that YG put together a group with people who don’t really like to rap. Jennie wasn’t a rapper until she joined, Rosé has a very laidback tone and voice that fits indie, and Jisoo has a clear tone that would fit poppy songs. I think Lisa has a good voice for it, but the lyrics just aren’t good. My point is it feels very commercial and forced. When I listen to their covers I enjoy it, but their own songs I can’t get into. Hopefully, they can have a concept change or come out with something that fits their OWN styles better.

I kinda foresaw them sampling this way cause YG. As someone who has listened to La Campanella way before this, I was waiting for sth else to happen other than that half phrase hahahah. I was like... "ok and??" I guess it's fine. I don't want to say it's lazy cause like Kevin said, they just be sampling. Since they just looped it the whole song, the producers could have made it a little bit more interesting? Like the last sections(?) of the og piece is good material for this song. The hype around this comeback was this sampling, and the "shutting down our haters" theme is not sth new with BP.

Jory's reaction at 3:55 was me the first time I heard this song honestly 😂 "THEY FINALLY USED THE END OF THE PHRASE" But yeah Jason's rant is the point of all this music being made: its a product, and they want the general public to like it, not specifically classical musicians or knoledgeable musicians or whatever, it has to be catchy, cool, danceable and likeable to at least half of the world dammit 😅 but yeah, i was WAITING SO HARD FOR THIS REACTION!! love it
@clara-rq9my2 жыл бұрын
the use of only a specific part of panini's song when compared with feel my rhythm is justified by the intention. fmr was constructed to be a hommage to the piece in question and it's overall a pop song, while blackpink's shut down is a lot more hip hop focused. hip hop culture historically uses repetitive beats, because what drives the song is the rapper's delivery in terms of flow, cadence, rhymes, etc. so of course the use of a classical piece in a hip hop song would have to be addapted to fit into this syncretism, wich is also the reason why the key isn't the original one but a lower version of it and also why the tempo is a bit more slow. it's just a matter of what musical genre the groups were trying to convey

In the first few seconds I was also very annoyed by how they did not finish the phrase and kept repeating the same part, but not even halfway in it clicked for me and I have to say it was more clever than I initially thought. Certainly an interesting way to sample a classical piece and one of their most interesting tracks to date. Also 💯what Jason said

Teddy is a genius composer and producer. He knows how to play with sounds and know that hip hop is the core of YGent. Jason is right. Shutdown sounds different with a classical sample yet sounds like bp aswell and made to appeal to public. Slowly BP is changing their sound but "catchy" should stay on their songs. Thats why BP is so popular nowadays

Disclaimer I don't know much about music at all. But when I first heard the strings I actually wondered if they were sampling a haegeum, a traditional Korean bow and string instrument. My mind went there because they had opened Pink Venom with Jisoo playing the gayageum. So I thought maybe that was a bit of a theme they were going with for the album. Obviously I was way off, but I think it would be cool to reference traditional Korean instruments in Kpop (not sure if that's been done or not).

There's been a lot of kpop songs with traditional korean instruments! Especially more recently. Although, I don't know if I've heard the haegeum in any. Like you mentioned, the opening of pink venom. I've been looking forward to this channel's reaction since the song dropped. Brian's theory about WHY they included Paganini was tremendously insightful and I appreciated it so much. It actually made me surprised no one took a deep dive on WHY this song only used a very brief snippet, repeated over and over, but his theory inspired me to add a little more to my own. A lot of the hate directed towards Blackpink in fandoms (that isn't akgae and antis) is about "the Teddy Formula." Basically, bitter assholes who have no success in music believe they are the authoritative source on what makes music good. They argue that Teddy uses the same structure and techniques with almost every song he produces and, boy, are they mad about it! Using just a piece of La Campanella fits with the rest of the theme of clapping back with callbacks and sampling. It's basically Teddy and BP saying, "You hate us for doing stuff that has a consistent sound, structure, and style? Here's a sample of a two hundred year old song, literally just TWO measures, repeated for three minutes, and it's GOING TO STAND OUT and it's going to get hundreds of millions of views and it will probably win some awards. Hate on that while we count our money."
