A friend of mine and me had this kind of contest where we gave eachother a beginning of a piece and we had to continue it and I think thats a good way to practice, because you see what the other person made from your two bars for example and you also have the chance to have some feedback. I really like this type of video. 😊👍

@RolandDeason3 жыл бұрын
I don't know if anyone will reply to this, but he talked about notes being justified played on top of the chord being essential notes or inessential notes, is this not all notes? I'm kinda confused. Can anyone clarify the relationship or what exactly are inessential notes? Couldn't get a good answer from Google lol
@MusicMattersGB3 жыл бұрын
Essential notes are notes that belong to the chord sounding at the time. Inessential notes are notes that are slipped between essential notes that do not belong to the chord.

Very educational video. You're a knowledgeable man in music theory indeed. This video encouraged me how to know how amazing my newest compositions are turning out currently. About rhythmic character, Bach has quite a few pieces that are written mostly in 16th notes, but they are felt in different groupings throughout the piece, making you feel a rhythm that isn't written
@MusicMattersGB3 жыл бұрын
That’s true. Bach uses 16th notes quite a lot in 6/16 9/16 12/16. The groupings normally accord with those compound time signatures but there’s often plenty of syncopation/ rhythmic displacement.
@tedbrownlow4617 Жыл бұрын
Are you talking about a rhythm accented by leaps / turns? Aka C B A C B A C B would be a 3+3+2 rhythm
@MusicMattersGB Жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. Really it’s more about how beats relate to rhythms eg in 6/16 there are 6 semiquavers per bar arranged as two groups of three, with each group of three generating a dotted quaver beat.

Is it possible to write a melody using one or two of the extension notes of the chord on the strong beats? Say, using an F# note on a Gmajor7 chord. Or, an A or E? Would they need to be in a higher pitch to behave as extensions which harmonize with the the chord tones rather than lower notes behaving as inessential notes? Or, when I write or see any extended chord, should I always simply boil it down to it’s basic triad to write a melody and work with it such as how you’ve shown us? Thanks!

I'm struggling with conjunct and disjunct melodic balance when using arpeggios. An arpeggio mostly stacks notes in thirds, but this will be in skips, not steps. You say balance conjunct and disjunct melodic notes, but does that mean do not have a series of arpeggios one after the other? I've seen many tubes and websites state that arpeggios are very melodic but this is in contrast with stepwise motion. Confusing
@MusicMattersGB4 жыл бұрын
Arpeggios are good but balance them with scale movement and it works really well.
@philipgreenwood32514 жыл бұрын
@@MusicMattersGB Thanks. I do have a tendency to try and squash as many notes as possible with sweep picking arpeggios, but I should really be more selective about speed bursts. Will definitely try to mix with other devices.
