Excellent and significant sample of music that we can still consider classical romantic close to our western culture. The 20th century was, however, also a petri dish for the development of other musical forms, not so accessible and easy to understand, still as beautiful and valuable, as well as the beginning of acceptance and integration of Indian, Chinese, Arabic, Native Americans, among others, that, even though ancestral, had stayed away from us, the "westerners". There was not only one stream, but an explosions of styles. Returning to this sample, it is striking how HALIDON includes creators (e.g. Nino Rota, John Williams, Ennio Morricone), whose works were created SPECIFICALLY for cinematographic scores, something that encountered a lot of resistance from those who considered them a "minor genre". Bravo for that and Bravissimo for Save the Children!

Yes, here we are in a new century, the 21st, already far removed from the time when, I should imagine, most of these pieces were composed in the 20th, and yet our society hasn't advanced culturally; in fact, it's fallen back terribly & is mired in the gutter, the U.S. especially but the entire West as well. Listening to Rota's "A Time for Love" right now as I type, by itself is proof enough of the great humanity behind the composition, the human longings, passions, & needs portrayed in the most positive sense. So does the next from "Schindler's List", music to soothe the soul, representing a time of man's colossal inhumanity to man. The world needs far more of such compositions, now more urgently than ever before. The dawn of the 20th-century offered so much hope & promise for mankind, some realized, some not, but no such optimism exists in the 21st. Only the music heard here can keep its fading, flickering embers alive for the current century, a century that only can be described as both sad & ugly. Thank God we have this music to guide, console, & offer us continued hope!
