Many people have said A song without words sung by a band without instruments. 2nd Grammy

The Grammys changed the category from best arrangement instrumental to best arrangement instrumental or accapella. They have been the best music arrangers for over a decade now. No one is better.

It seems that opera/classical voice major Avi brought the idea of this piece to the group and, using his composition/arranging minor, worked with PTX's producer/arranger Ben Bram to bring the piece to this result. In terms of the video itself, it was filmed and edited by the same small production company, FifGen Films who did "Daft Punk Medley", "Love Again", "Can't Hold Us", "Radioactive", and, of course, "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", among others. Avi has mentioned that in "Dance", they each recorded their parts separately, and that Avi's was done in about 10 minutes, which was probably the case for each of them.
@SirHairless11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the info! I figured each part was done separately due to how they're all edited over each other - I've rewatched it so many times since I filmed this yesterday! Must be around 30-40 times now haha

He's not often talked about but he really should be. Ben Bram, who worked with Scott at USC where Scott fell in love with a cappella. Ben is often times referred to as the 6th member of Pentatonix. If you watch the video The Making of Evergreen(2021 xmas album) you'll see Ben in there working his magic. For that video they invited the cameras into the studio to watch them go through their process of getting a song to where they wanted to be. I agree with you, as most reactors do, the song is way too short

I've been looking forward to this reaction! One of the things I've always liked about PTX, is that they are always defying and redefining the music and (especially) the a Cappella industry! This is just one example. They don't know the meaning of the phrase 'can't be done'. They were told it couldn't be done: a piece of music with no vocals being sung by a group with no instruments. They did it anyway, and, of course, the grammy was the result. Pentatonix has shown and defied the music industries for years! They were the first a Capella group to make it into mainstream music. They paved the way for others to follow. They are the most innovative a cappella group out there. That's why I love their music, and love seeing and hearing people react to them. Thanks so much for this, and welcome to the ranks of Pentaholics!

I have one thing to say about that... actually a lot of things but this comment I'll stick to the one. They have a studio version of Imogene Heap's Aha and a live version Singapore Star Vista. The later is an amateur recording filmed on someone's cell, but the performance is probably ranking top 3 maybe even number 1. I'd recommend watching the studio version before Singapore because if you don't the studio will fail by comparison. Both are great but there's something about that live show that just , well, you'll see. Next level PTX especially Avi and Mitch.

I'm absolutely loving your Pentatonix reactions! 'A Merry Mitch Slap' - tee hee! So interesting and informative. It's nice to have another British reactor to them too. I've been a Pentaholic since 2011 when they were on the Sing Off. I saw them for the first time in London in May this year and although I'm 54 and have been going to live music for 40 years, it was the best music concert I've ever been too. They are PHENOMENAL live. Please please react to their Aha 'Live in Singapore'. It is iconic for a Mitch slap. It was recorded by a fan on a phone so no copyright issues (yay!) and it's one of the nights when Avi blows the speakers - you can hear the distortion afterwards! Mitch was jetlagged and had consumed some red bulls before the show and they kicked in during this song and he WENT OFF! I can't wait for you to react to it. I'm looking forward to your PTX reactions on 2024! Have a wonderful Christmas.

I don't understand why so many radio stations never or very rarely play Pentatonix, in general, of course, but ESPECIALLY at Christmas. A lifetime ago I worked in a coffee shop that played only Christmas music every day 24/7 starting in NOVEMBER!. SO much of the music was the same stuff they play every year, that I personally have gotten SO sick of, especially after listening to the same songs over & over for longer than a month. Meanwhile PTX has such a deep repertoire of amazingly refreshing & innovative songs that I genuinely think many people would be happy to hear. Anyone have any ideas why? I've learned about unbelievably talented singers on KZbin whose talent is mind-blowing, that to this day, I've NEVER heard on the radio.
@SirHairless11 ай бұрын
I think it's just to do with the fact it's acapella - whether people want to accept that there is perhaps a stigma surrounding acapella music or not is up to them, but it does exist from what I've noticed growing up. And it's a real shame because I think PTX's music is masterful on many different levels I guess the radio tends to opt for pop music...popular music...which is defined by the majority of listeners. I guess the majority of listeners in the world don't know Pentatonix. I actually included a question about PTX in a Christmas quiz recently - I showed a picture, played a short excerpt from their God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, and wrote something like "An acapella group regularly covers Christmas songs...they have hundreds of millions of views/listens on many of their songs..."etc etc. The question was "what is the group's name" and not one person could answer it. A few said they had heard of them though
@meghanmacqueen515711 ай бұрын
@@SirHairless I think you're right about people making assumptions about acapella music, which is so unfortunate. Most of the time I'm listening to PTX, I completely forget there aren't any instruments.

Here in New England, US - we heard some of the PTX "Please Santa Please" - even at the supermarket. But nothing yet on Audacy's default Christmas radio station - from any of the "Trifecta" of a cappella? Uneducated programming staff.
@meghanmacqueen515711 ай бұрын
@@InkWellideas I'm in Ontario (Canada) & I'm not sure I've EVER heard them on the radio. Instead the 24/7 Christmas music radio stations just keep playing old "classics" from the 50s, or newer, badly-done covers of those songs. I feel like I'm going to stick pins in my eyes if I have to hear those songs one more time.
@rlhcat766211 ай бұрын
Finally! This is an a cappella masterpiece, and your analysis was wonderful. This is the music we were spoiled with while they had a classical composer in the group for 7 years. They can all sing anything, but Avi had the vision for music like this, and perhaps Kevin. Now we have Avi doing his own beautiful compositions and PTX doing the fun, interesting music they enjoy. You know, when I first started following Dimash's career, it was when I was still captivated by Pentatonix (still am!). I'd found out about them from the Singoff. So, for a few years, I was wondering how on earth could I have jumped from Pentatonix to Dimash Qudaibergen... seemed so random. However, over time, I have come to realise that my interest in music has never changed. I have always been attracted to the ways music notes or sounds are arranged and put together to form an enchanting or mesmerising whole. That is what Pentatonix excels at. That is why I'm so fascinated by Dimash. Both are crazy amazing at the new ways they create music. And I'm so happy your analyses and comments are clarifying and highlighting how the sounds are arranged and placed.

I think you would like to be in their studio when they were putting a song together. They memorize their specific parts and then join them. They are all musicians!

My favorite thing is to watch different reactions to the same videos and yours hands down have been incredible at explaining things that no one else has. I don’t always hear what you hear, especially with Avi’s lower note changes but when you do the piano and the sheet music to show it, I can hear it better. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and appreciation!!!!

What a Merry (Mitch slap) Christmas gift you’ve given us… I hope you’ve enjoyed it at least as much as we definitely have🎅 I’m happy you’re interested in the Evolution of mvs… they are masters of the mashup/transitions. I think Evolution of Music was their 1st, and maybe most difficult. There are Evolutions mostly in Avi era, but they still did a bit more in the Matt era… I get so excited looking forward to whatever you bring us for 2024! But ptx did do Auld Lang Syne as well as their own New Year’s Day… hint hint😉. Wishing you a joyous holiday and a peaceful new year ahead (filled with loads of music, and music education and appreciation to share 🌟🎹🎶). Thank you for what you do!

Thank you!! I do plan on releasing an Auld Lang Syne reaction around New Year's but, full disclosure, it's not PTX! I'm also away over New Year so am very limited in time and the vids are already decided - if only we had unlimited time eh?!?! Hope you have a very Merry (Mitch slap) Christmas and end of year too 🙏

Another fantastic reaction and analysis. Thank you. After this one where you provided us with so much historical information on the music, and instruments, I couldn't help but imagine how wonderful it would be for us to see you react to their Evolution of Music performance. Have a great holiday season.

Another great reaction. I so enjoy your analysis and though I usually skip the piano breakdowns because it's a bit over my head, I do appreciate you pointing out specifics in harmonies or rhythms then replaying that portion in the song because it helps me know what to listen for. Have a terrific Christmas.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed and have a lovely Christmas too! P.S. on the skipping over the piano parts: in this particular case, I do mention that the piano here is more of a visual representation of how close the notes are to each other and how that makes the chords sound 'weird'! So hopefully it will make sense 🤞But, of course, no worries if not!

Another Grammy worthy song is Voiceplay cover of Nothing Else Matters. Can I get an amen!??
