I always love Jarod's descriptions they're so vivid and accurate that it's easy to completely feel what he's thinking. Like he takes the actual features of the songs that all you geniuses point out and interprets them in a different way to try and convey their significance. It always just clicks but also gets you to think even further. But thank you all as usual, I've been looking forwards to this one because heize gives off such a unique and confident vibe I wondered whether that came from the song writing or the delivery.

i think jarod and katie in particular were really able to grasp what heize and her composers/producers were doing. not to say the others were wrong or anything, but i feel some of the reactors weren't able to read between the lines as much, and consequently, didn't really seem to get the (arguably) intentional juxtaposition between the music and the mv + lyrical content for "mianhae", and the parallels between the instrumentals and lyrics for "jenga"
@astro_orc6 жыл бұрын
jenga is so dang good, the ascending chords and awkward resolution in the chorus along with the piano dodging the beats in the same bit emphasizing the "instability" of jenga is like.... a really sweet way to musically portray the feeling

Oh my god, the second song was so incredibly jarring. I loved how she had such a monotone voice disguised by an upbeat melody. It fit perfectly into what she wanted to convey, of living sadly like a doll for others to manipulate while she tried to put on a happy front.

Something we were taught in appreciation is that when you break any art down to it's bare bones, it isn't all that interesting. Especially with music when you break it down into formula, you see technique before you see how that technique relates to the story. I'd like to see perhaps more comparative analysis to how well the techniques used in the song were able to effectively tell the story the artist is performing rather than how interesting individual pieces/techniques are. Interest is relative, effectiveness however is something that can be analysed with the fine comb of critique. It can also keep you guys a bit safer from the risk that comes with these style of videos, where 'Is the entire song interesting?' is usually going to end in a no. Specify the critique a little, and it becomes more applicable to the wide variety of genre that you guys cover. Hoping for the best for you guys. :D

I'm with you. I relate to different reactors at different parts of my own artistic journey. Early on, I got stuck in "is this the most interesting and unique and _deep_ thing. This has to have extensive meaning and novelty, otherwise why bother," but I came to a point of understanding and truly accepting that technique can't always stand in for enjoyment, while enjoyment _can_ stand in for technique. I came to accept and embrace that it's enough to just simply _like_ something. I feel like I became a better artist in some ways when I came to accept that, rather than constantly judging others and myself on the concept of _my perception_ of depth and others' intentions and etc. Art _is_ relative, and that's okay! Great, even. Feels like the Gaussian curve meme: "Noooo! Art has meaning and technique that make some art objectively good and some art objectively bad!!!" __________ / \ "Art is subjective" _____/ \_____ "Art is subjective" It is fun and interesting to break apart and examine the parts of a whole to see how they work together, and it's also fair to just not personally be excited by a piece or have tastes that don't incline you to like a piece. But yes, it's important to keep in mind that technique or novelty alone isn't going to speak to worth of a piece, which is what viewers (and even the reactors) are at risk of mistaking for one another in these kinds of things.

I love Kevin's appreciation for her lyricism, because she is absolutely a talented lyricist and rapper. I agree with others that I feel there was some lacking analysis on some of the structural choices in some of these, because, fair, Heize is a little less flashy as a musician than a lot of Kpop tends to be (she's not writing dance pop - she sticks to more jazz R&B), and she seems to, by my understanding of what I've heard from her, like to stick to slight changes and subtle interest in repeated choruses, emphasized by surrounding lyrics. So her music can definitely feel like not a _lot_ is being pumped into her songs. I personally love the "JuXtApOsItIoN" (

I love Don't Come Back (featuring Highlight's Junhyung). She performed that song in Kcon 2016 I think. Also, Hourglass/Sandglass sung by Wanna One's Daehwi and Ong Seongwoo. She just featured near the end, but she composed it, so if you wanna know more about her style, I highly recommend these 2 songs, along with the ones mentioned in other comments 🙂

Here's the thing, every song she makes becomes a hit achieving all kills on all music charts. So I would recommend all. She belongs to an unofficial trio of digital monsters who keeps getting all kills everytime they release a single, an EP or a full album (IU, Heize, Bolbbalgan4).

I love how Henry’s (I think) statement of “it feels like an imposter in a genre it doesn’t belong in” and that “it sounds jazzy but isn’t really jazz” is LITERALLY the entire message of Mianhae. Like that’s the whole point 😭 Being mechanical wasn’t what she wasn’t trying to get across, otherwise this song would probably be EDM or something electronic. That’s why she wasn’t a CYBORG she was a HUMANOID. Human like. Almost there but not quite. And that last step towards reaching humanity is what she can’t achieve as a humanoid and is also the metaphor. Heize is not a conventional idol which equates to the message of the song and also equates to the song sounding like it’s supposed to fit a standard genre but not really achieving that. I believe that it was an artistic choice on her and the co-composer’s part to make the song sound “jazzy.” If she wanted to go all out jazz, she probably would have. But that would distance the music from the message even more bc once again, the off kilter tone/coloration of the song would no longer parallel the lyrics and meaning. Lastly, I think what needs to be realized too is that there is a lot of nuance that went into these two songs, respectively. It’s not a stretch to assume that these are things the artist has taken into consideration, ESPECIALLY considering the fact that Heize is a solo artist and gets a larger amount of say in the music she wants to create than other company driven musicians do in comparison. Nevertheless, the reactions were still great!!!

HEEIZE~ 💕💕 Thank you! ☺️ She's not an idol or technically "kpop" though, just fyi. Also, a phrase that repeats is "노래하는 기곈데" (roughly translates "singing machine/robot") which I feel is kind a big part of the song's message. Jsyk. (Could you please ask Kevin what classical song Yoona's 'To you' is inspired by?)

Of course the dude with glasses and the girl with him felt this was boring. Very classical musician mindset. I don't think they really understand this style or the emotion. And missed a lot of the flow, unlike the black guy who perfectly understood the flow. And they said it wasn't melodic but there were a lot of layers besides the piano and her voice. Muted guitar parts, the drums, the bass, and a lot of other smaller layers. Again the black guy picked up on at least the bass. It's not supposed to be a melodic epic score. It's very vocally driven and low keyed emotion from her breathy and inflected flow style singing which was incredibly rhythm based. Not Melody based, but had refreshing splashes of nuance and Melody during key changes. They really didn't get it.
