A fun fact that I discovered: most of the melody is in Eb minor pentatonic scale, which uses only the black keys on the piano. The only extra note in there is the F, which I imagine was used to make resolving to tonic more comfortable. Because is song has a sort of dark and creepy vibe, I wonder if this choice of using mostly black notes is a conscious artistic choice.

Let Me In.... the slander ! Let me in is so musically interesting to me and it’s such a masterpiece. I especially love it bc it showcases Haseuls amazing vocals (which sadly were not showcased in their debut album ++)

The vocals are really the only impressive part of the song. The rest of it was just.. predictable I believe other musicians said? I'll have to go back and rewatch the reaction. In fact I'm surprised it was included in this list because it kind of fell in the category that Eclipse did where it was a song carried vocally but the music itself was just.. not bad but.. predictable like I said? I'm Lip biased too and even I'm saying Eclipse without the vocals is pretty boring lmao. Haseul does a great job on that track but unfortunately that's basically the only impressive part on that solo. Same with Lip's.

“This chorus is a work of art” i fucking shed a tear. Yes my son. I’ve been screaming praise for this song since it came out. This song is pure perfection. I love this song so much. I dedicated a month of my life to building an instrumental version from the ground up and just letting every detail find its place in my mind. The count switch for the drop. The synths. The pops of texture. The ahh vocals over the chorus. The fact that NO SECTION REPEATS UNTIL LIKE 2:15 INTO THE SONG, AND EVEN THEN THERES NEW FLAVOURS INCORPORATED. The restraint shown to not have the heavy drop come back AT ALL. My god I love this song so much.

Kpopalypse's review of "New": The song has only four chords, and these are Am, Dm, Bb, F - this never changes. The backing becomes louder and softer, rhythm and melody are given greater or less emphasis, but the harmony is completely static. So using traditional music theory functional harmony which would determine the start of the four-chord sequence as the root of the song, that would translate to i-iv-bII-VI… which mathematically means the song is tonally in “A phrygian” mode? The melody fits this as well, however the song doesn’t even remotely have the flamenco-esque “modal” sound that is present in obvious phrygian-raised-3rd pieces such as Dick Dale & The Del Tones’ “Misirlou” or any number of thrash metal guitar solos. So if it’s not phrygian, what is it - minor or major? Perhaps the Am is an anacrusis (or hangover from the end of the previous four) and the Dm is the start of the sequence, meaning that in functional harmony the song is i-vi-III-v, but that doesn’t quite fit either, the song’s melody has a joyous sound which is much more in keeping with major tonality than minor. Now if we’re talking major scales, then this would mean that the true chord progression is iii-vi-IV-I, so in other words the root chord or the “home base” of the song is the F major which is the last chord in the sequence of four chords. I can’t think of another example off the top of my head in any commercial pop music anywhere that fucks with a four chord structure in this way by making you wait for the key harmony for the first three chords (I’m not talking about intros, I’m talking about simple chords in the body of the song). As a result, because the song takes that fucking long to resolve (a three chord wait before the root chord hits for the first time is an eternity in any pop song sequence, let alone one where those four chords are literally all there is) the song constantly feels like it’s on a forward journey. This harmonic movement actually forms the conceptual basis of the song itself which is then also manifested further by the churning rhythms, a melody that also rarely resolves by skating around the root more often than not, and also is then reflected lyrically as well as thematically with the music video. “New” actually surprised me by genuinely living up to its name and being a new, fresh sound - there simply isn’t another k-pop song remotely like this anywhere right now.

A popular loona theory is the counterparts theory where each yyxy girl has a corresponding 1/3 girl. Yves = Vivi, Chuu = Haseul, Go Won = Hyunjin (the concert VR for See Saw has Go Won making Hyunjin's necklace) and Olivia = Heejin. The significance of it is kinda ambiguous what with BBC throwing so many wrenches into theory (the entirety of Hi High and now Vivi becoming a human at the end of Love and Live) but it's just A Thing™ that 1/3 cameos in the yyxy solos.

She completely deserves it after half fandom slept on her solo song, and then she didn't have much screen time in their debut or lines in ++, so I feel like she's even more underrated than Haseul (because we all know the power of her vocals, but only a few people appreciates Hyunjin's soft voice)

The breakdown part after the first chorus is great, but I feel like the song becomes boring after the rap part. They could've added something interesting in the second verse, but they just went straight to the pre-chorus and then into the chorus. Out of these 6 songs, I think Love Cherry Motion and Kiss Later are my favourite. Both of these songs remain interesting throughout the entire song, and keep subverting your expectations (in a good way).

FYI this is just Future Bass with tropical house/Pop influences. The full "Drop" so to speak dropping on the second is becoming common place in said genre. The reason the rhythm can seem weird is that the house beat in the background slightly throws you off from the future bass rhythm. 7th chords are almost necessary for the future bass vibe mostly because it compliments the fluffy nature of the triangle gated synth chords. (there's multiple in depth descriptions of the specific sound design for future bass all over youtube) the future bass foundation forces more interesting chord choices out of a somewhat overused pop/house formula. The pop elements sort of remind of some of Sam Smiths new stuff which is interesting to see how its affected by the surrounding influences of Korean music and Future Bass. Future Bass has a usually cute sound, however this dark, edgier tone gives it this half cute and emotional, and half sinister vibe. There's a Future Bass remix of Skott - Porcelain that goes this same route, in a beautiful yet haunting way. Beautiful Tragedy I guess. Also, though a complete genre shift, a tone similarly given off by the new twenty one pilots album. Although Trench is arguably more subtle, its that same vibe of "something bad is definitely going to happen". Moving back to future bass, id say this is a nice change from most future bass. For starters there's a ton more lyrics, and adding lyrics in the chorus unlike most edm gives it that pop vibe it needs and it sells it perfectly. It's definitely a nice change from artists id say are prominent in the future bass realm such as Marshmello, The Chainsmokers and Snails House.
