Guys..... If you pay attention to the opening of the movie, there are telltale signs of who each of the hidden Kung Fu Masters are. The Opening credits start with a Butterfly which symbolizes the main character played by Stephen Chow. The first time you see the Coolie, he's Kicking the bag of feed onto his shoulders. The first time you see Donut the Baker, he's rolling out the Congee with his staffs. The first time they reveal the Tailor, all his rings are featured prominently around him. The first shot of the Landlord, he's drinking Fluid, and the Landlady starts her scene by Screaming. And the last reveal of the Beast, he's in seclusion surrounded by Frogs.... On second watch, the reveals and hidden tells are Genius

To be clear, Stephen Chow is legendary in Chinese cinema as an amazing action comedian. He spoofs a bunch of martial arts and martial arts adjacent genres and in his own way he was as popular as Jackie Chan was in Asia. There's a really funny joke in here that sadly was lost in translation. It's after the Tailor/Donut fight with the two instrument-playing assassins. Donut lay dying, talking to the Landlord and his wife, and suddenly re-enacts Sean Connery dying in The Untouchables, and in full English, says: "What are you prepared to do?" The landlord looks at him and says "I don't understand. Can you switch back to Chinese, please?"

Think it’s less lost in translation and more people not getting the reference in general Very few people nowadays have seen The Untouchables, and they also didn’t put what he said in subtitles cause they assumed an English speaker would already be able to understand him, even though most people I’ve seen can’t understand what he’s saying They still laugh at the ‘why don’t you speak Chinese?’ Part after though, so it fortunately still works as a joke

A small note is, In Chinese "Brother" and "Sister" can be used in a non-familial sense. Like "Brothers in arms" - So when the Lady at the start says "Big Brother" - it's more like greeting a close friend (they aren't friends, she's just begging not to be ended) so they aren't related iirc.

Me,too. I was expecting their reaction of Steven’s movies after their reactions to Kungfu panda. Because obviously Kungfu panda has borrowed a lot of ideas from Steven’s movies like the toe-stepping and final hit from heaven in the fight with Tyilong. And in the second one, the way Po reduced the power of the fireballs from Shen looks similar to what is in Kongfu soccer. I guess, Some people only have the ability to appreciate American values and CGI techniques.

Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer are top-tier movies, but for me, as an Asian who has watched Stephen Chow’s movies since I was a kid, there are many of his other movies that are even better. Even Stephen Chow actually know kung fu. The director and producer of this movie is among the most famous Hong Kong star along side with celeb like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Andy Lau, Chow Yun Fat, and Donnie Yen. When I first saw Kung Fu Hustle I wasn't that into it. Came around a little on subsequent watches over the years, but long before that I saw Shaolin Soccer and for some reason loved it from the first watch. If anyone wants to analyze or give an interpretation for why I didn't like KFH very much but loved SS, I wanna point out first that there are plenty of movies I adore or just like very much that other people inexplicably don't, and those same people also love movies I love, and those same people will adore particular movies that I didn't care for. I guess it's a little different when you see the guys here giving their vocal reaction, but the whys for this stuff can be pretty mysterious. Anyways, maybe they'll love Shaolin Soccer for some reason, just like I did.

I've seen some people who immediately understood how heartfelt and deeply moving the silliness of this movie is. Then there are people like the ones in this video to whom silliness is always light and empty. Maybe because they can't conceive a thing with meaning and weight not making its qualities immediately apparent. Kungfu Hustle is a masterpiece about martial arts film history and its themes facing modernization. Its also about the relationship between HongKong, mainland China, and Hollywood(Western) influences and its effect on ideals and self-identity. Its a beautiful and thoughtful film wearing accessible clothes of lighthearted comedy. Stephan Chow didn't do well as a producer in Hollywood because he wasn't allowed enough control over his projects.

There's a hidden narrative behind the story: the gangster Axes, the masters living among people, the epic fights, these are all actually a revenge fantasy of a little boy who was bullied. In their last scene in front of the candy store, every character in his fantasy was customers and people on the street. Just like a dream where all the components are a mishmash of fragments of his life. That's why their fighting scenes are just like comic books, and that's why his recovery makes no sense.

From what I read about the Dragon Ball movie, Stephen Chow bailed on the project, but his name was just randomly throw in. He had no involvement at all, but there were some actors/actresses that signed on thinking that he would be the executive producer and wanted to work with him.
