It's cool because you then can flip it to the artists perspective. They love their fans but have to draw a line as to how much love they can expect in return. As a celebrity your fans are not your friends, because at the end of the day they can and will love you one day then hate you the next (or grow out of being your fan like Ban Heeso eventually does). And just like how there's a healthy way to show love to the artists, there's a healthy way to show love to fans. Really drives home the 'ditto' concept.

My favorite thing I noticed about Ditto is that, while the ra-ta-ta line is specifically used as onomatopoeia for a heartbeat it ALSO links the image of a fast heartbeat when you fall in love with someone or something to a snare drum roll. Most often in music you see a bass drum often symbolizing a heart beat with the ba-dum sound. But a snare drum makes more of a ra-ta-ta sound and requires a quicker, fast paced roll, which matches the quick paced, somewhat disconnected, drum line used throughout Ditto, i.e. a faster heart rate!!
@lovelylya6421 Жыл бұрын
Different topic, but also about the ra-ta-ta: since Ditto was released in December, before Christmas, it made me remember about the song The Little Drummer Boy which sings ''parapapapam'' something like that. It was a great song choice for Christmas time.

The MV of OMG is very interesting. The girls simulate to be in a psychiatric hospital and have their own delirium/hallucinations that New Jeans themselves made up based on their own fears and personalities. For example, Hanni has a identity crisis where she thinks she is an Iphone (related to the fear of becoming an idol: "I would only exist for you, only sing for you"). Hyein believes she is the protagonist of every film and fairytale (also related to idol's obligation to always look beautiful and impeccable). Haerin is convinced that she is a cat (irl she is said by fans to have feline features). Danielle thinks she lives in a kind of "The truman show" and is always appearing/controlled on tv (she is the only one who realizes that they are a kpop group and that all that weird scenario is actually them recording a mv). And lastly Minji pretends to be a doctor of the hospital, when in reality she is another patient (she is the oldest of the group, this can represent her role as leader/careteaker). The mv could be interpreted as a representation of NJ's fears now that they have become an idol, basically of becoming crazy/losing their essence through exposure and misinterpretations of the public. It also could be a reminder for all the netizens that are pointing out NJ's members for not acting "neatly" and having a wild behaviour, that afterall these girls are still teenagers. They are happy being that way, they do not want to lose their silly authentic self for being accepted/refined/decorous. That is why at the end of the mv the doctor is disturbed sitting on the floor, because he is realizing he lost his "child playful side". And also that is why in the last scene Minji is inviting a netizen who criticizes their playfulness to not being an embittered and becoming crazy and happy with them basically. Also, I must say this last scene has been very controversial in Korea. Since it ended as one of the girls inviting them to the hospital, some people interpreted that New Jeans was calling "crazy" or "sick" to those who criticize their music.

@carmenmartine2570 Жыл бұрын
@@CamCadie No, no, it's as you say. The controversial was about the "times up" Since Minji was dressed as a doctor, people interpreted the "times up" as if minji was invitating the netizen to "return to the psychiatric hospital where he/she should be". When actually they were inviting netizens to not care what others say and be crazy/happy and dream big

This video really captures why I love your videos so much; it’s so nice that you all recognize and pinpoint the emotions that music can bring, and especially connect to the features of the music itself. It definitely speaks to the power of music as an art but as shared experiences. The point about the kind of “call” at the beginning being lonely and bittersweet because of the progression of notes but also the sort of empty way it was sung really stood out to me, and sort of validated the kind of lonely nostalgia that this music video in particular brings. Ditto sounding like it’s longing for something and dragging something out also serves a huge purpose to the lyrics even if you were to put into a straight forward romantic perspective. The lyrics longs for the other person to share the same feelings you have for them. Especially for young girls, words of affirmation are a huge way to show affection for them whether it’s romantic, family or friendship. I just love the dual purpose of these songs. Even an adult who’s not a major kpop fan who wouldn’t relate to the fan concept, can at least relate to the message and the melody

"OMG" felt like it was purposefully kind of manically excited and happy, continuously falling into the next exciting delusion or fantasy and looping every (seemingly) good idea. While "Ditto" shows the wistful longing, emptiness, and loneliness of a depressive state/ low place - but they both feel equally desperate (for lack of a better word) for that reciprocation from the object of their affection. In this case, the relationship a lot of fans have with their fav idol. Obsession of someone doesn't equal ownership, which both songs together express the desperate want for the other person, "hoping that he will come through" and "say it back - ditto." Something that will never happen because the image of an idol (no matter how willingly transparent/honest on the idols part) is an incomplete person, one dimensional, and a fantasy. So, that feeling will never be reciprocated and leaves the fans (the pov here) wanting, and in a lot of fans cases, so invasively obsessive it dehumanizes idols even more.

Here it is portrayed with new tech (eg. OMG) vs old tech (eg. Ditto) and I'm excited to see how they're planning to portray the theme next!

Something I was just thinking about Ditto specifically was how the whole era of cam recorders and such was so brief but new. All this never seen before technology available to the everyday person for the first time, and we’re just fascinated and curious about it. I think what makes those kinds of videos so nostalgic is this sense of play so unique to that time, that was soon over taken by more advanced tech and EVERYONE becoming so familiar with it where that ‘newness’ is gone and could never fully be replicated the way it used to be today. I think the fastness in how it disappeared also plays into why ppl are going back so much in nostalgia factor, bc for younger generations we didn’t get enough time to wear it out and it was such a unique cornerstone of an era that was so different to what came after.

With Ditto, it feels nostalgic because it’s reminiscent (at least for me) of having feelings for someone and never telling them or missing a certain time in your life (for example, a time when you felt happier). Thinking back on those memories can make everything feel very fast paced, making you feel like you’re reliving it only to leave you longing to go back and ultimately end up empty. It’s kinda sad if you think of it.

@@No1PlutoSupporter Yeah at least in the sense of the music video, there was a lot of stuff that was foreshadowed/easter egged like the dance for OMG. Also theres a scene in Ditto where NJ is calling Ban Heesoo. Hanni thinking that she's an iPhone in OMG, is the one calling in Ditto.

I absolutely love this! Thank you for putting into words what these songs make us feel. I can't stop listening to OMG, but Ditto holds (and forever will) a special place in my heart, I've never connected to a MV like a did with both side A and B. I really hope they watched side B after this!

OMG! 😂 Seriously appreciate you guys! I love learning and seeing from all your perspectives! The video confused me to no end. I couldn’t catch messages because it seemed so disjointed. Listening apart from the video, the song was fine. But hearing your guys’ take on the video, music, story brings all the nuances out. Thank you! 👏🏽

Glad you got round to the 2 NJ songs reactions. Theres so much lore, theories, links within each videos, bunnies, Ban Heesoo and her YT channel, 4 cameos from Korean actors/celebrities, a massive number of dance practices, record numbers of TAKs and PAKs, 2 x full week show champions. They really do continue to push that 4th->5th Gen boundary!! Hope you let them all see Ditto SideB video after to see Ban Heesoo (Park Ji-hu) and "the boy" ( Choi Hyun-wook) get together.... And the 2 x "OMG" famous people are: The doctor is actor Kim Joo-Hun who has been in a few big K-dramas - Big Mouth, Its Okay To Not Be Okay and a cameo in AE Woo . And the guy at the end who picks up the cartoon drawings on the pad is famous cartoonist/webtoonist Lee Mal Nyeon (aka Calm Down Man on YT). New Jeans were on his YT/Twitch stream for a live 90minute chat/dance/discussion with him and actor Joo Woo-jae straight after OMG was released. It has subtitles! Looking forward to RV "Birthday" reaction and Gershwin comments!

Really enjoyed hearing Jason's interpretation of OMG. I hadn't heard that expressed so well and then how Ditto hit them all in different ways, I've had it on repeat since it came out and the video and concept is just so different and commenting on the relationship of idol and fandom and its really interesting to see the musical influence being part of that bittersweet longing Liam refers to at the end.

Please read this down below for those watching this music video fro abroad!!! As of April 29th in South Korea, it has been revealed that HYBE is a large pseudo-religious cult called 'Danworld. However, due to media censorship by HYBE, aside from 'X (past Twitter), • no media outlets are reporting on this matter, leaving those not using 'X' unaware of the current situation. Therefore, to uncover the truth of this incident, the use of foreign media outlets is necessary. Currently, some comments related to this issue are being written on NewJeans 'OMG' Official MV, but they are not visible at all on NewJeans' new song 'Bubble Gum Official MV. I loooooove hearing their reactions and interpretations of the songs presented to them. Did nobody in the reacting panel clock that they filmed OMG before Ditto but was released the other way around? OMG dance was literally in Ditto's MV even before OMG was released.
@kkuwura Жыл бұрын
Things to note about the lyrics of OMG: Guys on here were wondering, how are the lyrics supposed to be connected to the MV's theme. They seem disconnected on the surface. Well, that has to do with why I would've wanted them to react to Ditto first instead (+ it was released first so it makes sense from the narrative standpoint). Ditto can be immediately interpreted as an analogy to parasocial relationships between a fan and their idol. People were able to immediately interpret it as such because it's a very relatable experience for the fans to have your entire life revolve around your idols, showing them all your love, waiting every moment of your days for their activities to show them support, and wanting your idols in turn to reciprocate your love as well. It's an addictingly rewarding and fulfilling experience, but there lies the danger: the deeper you go into fandom, the more you lose touch with the real world. You start to confine in your idols instead of the people in the real world cuz the real-world people are much more complicated than the image your idols put on as the core part of their job. BUT, when it comes to OMG, it's the same story of confinement, fulfillment, rewarding feelings, and validation, just from the point of view of the idols. OMG on its surface is a sort of continuation to Attention and Hype Boy. That is, Attention and Hype Boy are an immediate and impactful infatuation with a person and OMG is a continuation of that and it's about falling in love with that person (aka the "boy") in a deeper way. But since it's coupled with Ditto as a part of the same release, it begs to be interpreted being a counterpart to Ditto. Now, you'd wonder, with so much pressure and scrutiny from the public eye for every single movement you make, when every single smile, frown, and gaze gets magnified and analyzed, when you get judged for every single choice of words, when your career can be ruined by some half-assed allegations from any random person on the internet, when there could be dozens of people, obsessive fans trying to find your location (sasaengs), when you could be exploited by your company in exchange for minuscule wages (or often no wages) and overworked with 12 hr schedules every day often to the detriment to your health, why would anyone willingly choose to not only go into this field but stay in it voluntarily? The answer is the fans. Fan interactions with kpop artists is not the same as with Western artists. Western artists are completely removed from the life of the plebian masses. They don't have to come down from their pedestal cuz they are inherently thought of as living on a different plane of existence. That's not the case with idols. There lies the point of differentiation between Korean music and kpop. Kpop msuic is a product of the idol industry, an industry about training and debuting these supposedly perfect individuals and it operates on the basis of cultivating very dedicated fandoms. Idols are there to be worshipped, so they need to be as talented, as kind, as cool, as beautiful, as admirable, as loveable as possible and keep up their image for as long as possible. They are held to that standard so that fans support them unconditionally, streaming their music so they reach the top of the charts, buying albums on mass, signing up for fan-meetups, and buying merchandise or products their idols are featured in. Therefore, also, not all Korean music is kpop cuz regular artists are not idols, they solely focus on just making music. Now, as an idol, you feel that love from your fans immensely. They show up to your events even if you might not be doing well on charts and popularity-wise. They buy your albums and cheer for you on stage as loud as possible cuz they know how hard you worked for your performance and for your new release. They are there when you're happy, they are there when you're sad, they're there when you're going through the toughest times or the best times of your life, just like the lyrics say. Imagine so many people validating you for all of your hard work and offering you unconditional love even when you don't feel the best. No denying that that is probably one of the most rewarding feelings you can have ever. So just like your fans get infatuated with you, you also seek sollace and comfort in your fans as well. But, in your attempt to seek validation from your fans as an idol, trying your best to fit the standards, you can very easily lose sight of your own identity as well and forget what makes you special in the first place. To top all of that, it's not uncommon for many idols to develop mental health issues from so much public scrutiny and pressure, and despite being these supposedly perfect people themselves, a lot of the times they have immense emotional and psychological baggage. So as you can see, the lyrics of OMG depict that process of losing yourself to the person ypu love (aka the fans, in NewJeans' case as idols) and the MV of OMG similarly depicts that detachment or dissociation that could come from trying to fulfill a certain role (of course, that's just on the surface level, since each member has distinct predicaments in the MV). I spent way too much time on this rant but I just love this comeback so much and can't help but gush about it, so if you read it this far, thank you :)

This is how good Min Hee Jin is, in how she played with your expectation. To put OMG and Ditto MV's as a social commentary would be way too premature given how much thought was given to how they presented it as a crossover between experimental art and commercial work. And this is how Min Hee Jin presents F(X) Pink Tape & 4 Walls art direction.
