Another poet still known for his grand poetic stories. His epic Qissa called Puran Bhagat was penned in the mid 1800s. Qadir yar is also considered a Punjabi nationalist, because he vigorously promoted and appreciated the rein of Raja Ranjit Singh in his writings.

You are right in that 'Qissa Puran Bhagat' is still popular in Punjabi folklore (especially in Indian Punjab). I still remember, as a child, my grandmother used to tell the story of Puran Bhagat...

Thanks for a scholarly discussion that I thoroughly enjoyed and learned something that I wasn't aware of before. The partition of Punjab and its aftermath that separated people on religious basis is indeed a historic tragedy that can only be undone if we reach out to each other across the artificial border. And seek mutual respect and thus have peace, once again. The ethnic cleansing of both Western and the Eastern Punjab that happened at the time of partition is a subject that is hardly talked about. I would suggest to read the book (Punjab Bloodied) that was written by Pakistani/Swedish scholar Dr. Ishtiaque Ahmed. The book details the horrors of partition in both east and west Punjab. We the Punjabis paid with our blood, more than any other group in the subcontinent for creation of both India and Pakistan. The bond that we have between each other in literature, history, culture, customs, cuisine are still there after seven decades. Why shall we continue to be manipulated by the political priorities of those who sit in New Delhi or in Islamabad? I commend scholars like this gentleman who reminded me of the story of Puran Bhagat, which my mother used to tell me at bedtime in the 50's. Why in God's name, we in Pakistan cannot accept that Ranjit Singh and Hari Singh Nalwa were OUR heroes and not those Arabs or Afghans or Persians who were nothing but invaders. Why must we be apologetic and forget about OUR OWN and adopt others with whom we have nothing in common but our religion. Why should we glorify, Abdali, Mohammed Bin Qasim and others when we have heroes right here in our own land. What has Tariq bin Ziyad got to do with us in Punjab? He was a Berber general who crossed Gibraltar. His name is everywhere in Pakistan. Why not a single street is named after Qadir Yar? A thought worth pondering!!!! Once again thanks for posting this awesome video.

Just want to add to your comments that, it is indeed popular and is sung in folklore as well but less popular than others. Shiv kumar batalvi also rewrote it underscoring tragedy of a women's sacrifice on the face of her duty.

This Qissa looks like Qissa of Hazrat Yousaf Alye Salam. Displacement , put into well, Desired by woman, put into well, blinded parent, then blindness of parent recovered. Draught, management of draught. Looks like remake of same Qissa in a different culture and time.

+Usama Arain Sir, Sorry to say that in Pakistan they never encourage the common culture or history of Punjabis. Read kissa puran Bhagat and I know there is still khooh of Puran Bhagat in Sialkot (I saw it on You tube). Kissa Puran was sung even tufail Niazi and Alam Lohar and Buta ghumar. Sialkot is named after Raja Salwan, father of Puran. Puran Bhagat, Dula Bhatti, Jagga Jatt (Daku), Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Hari Singh Nalwa and Ranjit Singh, Mian Mohd Bux sahib, Waris Shah, Heer Ranjha, Mirja jatt and many others are our common pride. Study about them. Jive Punjab.
