For me personally, the fact that Marco sings this in the same range as Tarja gives it a certain creepiness you don't get with lower voices. It fits so well.
@notquitemytempo13534 жыл бұрын
Usually with other Phantom's it's lower and kinda deeper, more baritone sound suggesting he's commanding and strangely seductive. Not to mention that this particular song is more of a showcase for the female voice. With Marco it's his rasp and high range that's indeed making the Phantom look as creepy as he actually is, but commanding as well. With this heavier arrangement that Nightwish did, his voice fits incredibly well, absolutely perfectly. I'm not sure though if it would fit with the traditional, musical theater arrangements which are very softer. Together with Ramin Karimloo they're hands down the best Phantoms I've ever heard. They did it in drastically different styles, but were both perfect in their own way.

This cover is also lower than the original which makes is easier for Marco to be in the same range as Tarja.

What blows my mind is Marco is singing one way, but as the bass player he's playing a totally different set of notes at the same time. Kind of a rub your belly while patting your head.

That is "relatively easy" ... but compare it with Phil Collins singing his "In the Air tonight" ... and playing the drums. That is a lot harder, because you potentially have four extremities doing completely different rhythms while doing "impacts" that might disturb the vocal cords.

Finnish is a very difficult language. Even Floor is having trouble with it, and she recently learned Swedish on top of the other languages she knows to some extent. Finnish is related to Hungarian
@timomastosalo4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Finnish is difficult, depending on the starting language. For an English speaker it is, it has so many endings, and English very little. Plus the core vocabulary is not Indo-European - there are not many languages related to it: it's Hungarian (distantly - at Stone Age hunter-gatherers) and estonian, plus 10-12 very small languages in what's now Russia. Whereas Swedish is related to Dutch and English.
@enlightendbel4 жыл бұрын
The issue is that while Flemish and Dutch people have an easy time learning most European languages and especially the Germanic based languages, Finnish is a whole other beast as it's an Uralic language, of which there's 30+ and only 20 Million or so people actually speak it. It doesn't have Greek or Latin roots and with that is just as hard as learning Japanese, Russian or Mandarin.

tarja is amazing. another great duo with marco (with nigthwish) is slaying the dreamer, i love it! but in her solo career you have very varied and interesting songs. of the oldest: i walk alone. and then supremacy and victim of ritual at Woodstock. anteroom of death, love to hate, innocence, mystique voyage, in for a kill, falling awake. something newer: serene, goodbye stranger ft Cristina Scabbia, dead promises, Shadow play, spirits of the sea (tribute to the disappeared submarine "ara san juan" from Argentina). and many more!!! hopefully reactions to any of those songs!

In my honest opinion, mate, this has gotta be the best performance across any genre, hands down. It just cuts through and gets into your noggin like nothing else I've heard before. Tarja and Marko, they're both absolutely smashing, and the band? Well, they were clockwork tight. Tarja and Floor, they're like chalk and cheese, innit? Both bringing their own flair to the table, but when it comes down to it, Tarja's just out of this world. She fits the band's vibe like a glove, doesn't she? Cheers from Patagonia!

Marco is awesome, he mentioned in an interview he enjoys singing with Floor the best cause he doesn't need to hold back, fearing of overpowering her, which is mental when you consider how powerful Tarja is.
@danwhitehousepc4 жыл бұрын
Not sure, but I thought that comment was directed at Anette more than Tarja.
@OrdinaryCritic4 жыл бұрын
@@danwhitehousepc, I mean, Marko clearly overpowered Tarja at the end, which is why her last note doesn’t sound as impactful as Floor’s (in Beste Zangers) even though the latter is more delicate than Tarja’s. Compare that with the slide in Romanticide Wacken 2013, that’s what it sounds like when Marko can’t overpower his duet. The impact is amplified. Don’t get me wrong, I prefer this performance to the Beste Zangers. Better band, Tarja’s performance (although I prefer Floor on the last note), and Marko. Friggin’ Marko! No offense to Henk.
@FemaleMetalLover4 жыл бұрын
@@OrdinaryCritic I am sorry - but you are comparing a metal version to a pop version which has almost 15 years apart, different productions and mixing. Marko is in "scream" mode, as is Floor in Beste Zangers in the end. Tarja is in head voice mode, completely different sound and not even comparable. And Tarja goes half a note higher than Floor in the last part. + Henke Port and Marco have different voices al together. But I can meet you half-way, I think Floor and Marco would be a better duo considering their voices matches more in terms of style - whereas Tarja would probably melt better in with Henke Port's vocal type - as they both specialize in a similar field.
@ArtMateurMusic4 жыл бұрын
@@FemaleMetalLover A Nightwish remake with Floor of this song would be totally epic, the problem is that that devastating Marko no longer exists, for the obvious reason of aging and his throat operation ... they would have to adapt it a bit, and that would be something different .. a good example is Slaying the Dreamer, where in 2005 Marko destroyed everything with his voice and today he needs the support of Floor ... anyway Marko continues to sing perfectly well, but you understand me, it would be very difficult for Marko to achieve a performance like here, not to say impossible.
@OrdinaryCritic4 жыл бұрын
@@FemaleMetalLover , yes, it is different. But it is always comparable. Higher note doesn’t mean better execution. Metal has it’s perks, and the Beste Zangers version definitely isn’t pop (it’s closer to classical, actually). Mixing is mostly an excuse. Tarja, as much as I prefer her timbre, still has the vocal issues that she had in End of the Era, even with better mixing. Grandpa Marko would still overpower her, whereas the guy admitted himself that he doesn’t have to hold back with Jansen. I must agree, though, Marko + Floor on the Phantom would be the dream team. As for Henk + Tarja, I’m still on the fence with how Tarja’s widely-spaced vibrato would “melt” with Henk’s tight vibrato. I imagine it would sound clunky, but I’d like to be proven wrong. 😅

Hey there, mate! I was passing by and came across YT suggestion to your video (you know, Nightwish on the radar >_< haha). I just subscribed to your channel and put a 'like' on your video! Liked your reaction btw! =) If that's alright, I want to recommend in this comment some songs with Tarja singing for you to react to and to fully know her power😍 -- including some classical music performances (I'm a metalhead but also a classical musician thanks to Tarja actually, so....... hahaha). I'm new to your channel, so I don't really know what songs by NW you have already reacted to and which ones you did not (I'm yet to explore more of your contents), but by what you said in this video, I'm assuming you saw more NW videos with Floor than with Tarja (btw, I love Floor too, she's my second favourite NW vocalist, after Tarja of course😍 -- yeah, I'm a Tarja girl hahaha, although I do not compare them at all and just try to appreciate each one individually, for they're widely different but equally amazing and unique artists, and both contributed in different, irreplaceable means that helped NW grow as a band and develop their artistic identity as a group and individuals. Tarja is -- of course due to my preferences, I know -- just the one who makes me feel the deepest emotions; I feel like she put an everlasting spell on me since I first listened to her, when I was like 13 or 14 years old!😍Haha). Well, what I was trying to say is, sorry if some link in my list is something you already heard haha. That being said, let's go (finally!😆) to the songs: - Nightwish with Tarja: 1. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4CndIBoa6-Lhbs . "Ghost Love Score", also from "End of an Era" dvd (song originally from the 2004 album "Once"). One of their greatest masterpieces! There's also Floor's version of this song at Wacken (which is just as amazing of course), I don't know if you already checked these out. Personally I prefer Tarja's version better (I tell you why in your reaction video to this song haha). 2. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGixaYCboMp7aJI . "Wishmaster", live from the 2005 dvd "End of an Era" (originally from the 2000 album "Wishmaster"). Amazing song and stunning performance! 3. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIq5nWmDhL-Lf9U . Song "Swanheart", live performance from 2001 dvd "From wishes to Eternity". The song is originally from their album "Oceanborn" (1998). Really beautiful ballad song 4. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5C1g4CIja-Krqs . "Sleeping Sun", also live version from "End of an Era". Outstanding, beautiful!!! 5. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oovKnKudoK1pf5o . "Planet Hell", also from "End of an Era" dvd (and originally from "Once" as well). kzbin.info/www/bejne/jISwdHdpbqp8g8U . "Kuolema tekee taiteilijan", also from "End of an Era" dvd (and originally from "Once" as well). I put this ballad song because I find it so beautiful and touching (plus, it's in finnish and I love it! haha). - Tarja's solo career (small side note: her solo musical style is not easily defined; of course it still has plenty of the symphonic metal elements as main references such as some kinds of guitar riffs, the epic orchestral arrangements, her remarkable operatic vocals and so on, but she incorporates aspects of many other styles (including in her singing sounds) and it's quite different compared to what we used to hear from NW, and it's just as magnificent!! I love the fact that she just walked her own path and found her "artist self", never trying to copy or recreate her old days with NW, she's happier and more free now, and I absolutely LOVE the results of her choices, hope you like it too): 1. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIWQiKytbtGMr68 . "In for a kill", from her 2010 album "What lies Beneath", but this performance is from her first live album Act I, released 2012. It's bombastic! Hear the lion within her roar! 2. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWS0noSEbLuGhKs . Also from Act I, this performance is a kind of mixed version of two of her ballad songs ("Oasis" from her "My Winter Storm" album (2007), and "The archive of lost dreams" from "What Lies Beneath"). Here she sings while playing a grand piano, and shows some dramatic nuances of her expression and voice, kind of "gothic vibes". She delivers such a touching, emotional and beautiful performance imo! It makes me shiver and cry every time! I've never seen anyone react to this performance, but I think more people should do it, it's a "forgotten treasure" imo! 3. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKnUoJetgbuXmbc . "Love to Hate", this song is part of her 2016 album "The Shadow Self" and the performance recorded in 2018, in London, for her second live-album 'Act II". Outstanding, another breathtaking performance, one of my favorites! 4. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqeXiYqhibyEZq8 . "Undertaker", also live for Act II, and another track of "The Shadow Self". Incredible! 5. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5a4m5muidCanLs . "Into the Sun", live performance recorded for Act I, but the song is included in her 2013 album "Colours in the Dark". Absolutely beautiful and stunning! 😍 6. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3jOk4SgbcppgKs . "Crimson Deep", the song is also from "What lies Beneath" and this performance, from Act I too. This one gives me chills, I just love it! 7. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2bddpVrrauff6c . "Supremacy", it's a Muse cover, live at Woodstock in 2016. Fantastic!!! - Some of my favourite performances of Tarja's classical concerts: 1. kzbin.info/www/bejne/imO5ept4bNZsq7M . This is Dvorák's "Měsíčku na nebi " (Song to the Moon), opera Rusalka. 2. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXapd6NpfJiWg8U . This one is the "Ave Maria" composed by Tarja herself. It's so heavenly, divine and touching! 3. kzbin.info/www/bejne/an-vZ6uJfbyErJI . Tarja performing Puccini's "O mio Babbino Caro" 4. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWeUooKwesmfbqc . This is "Mein Herr Marquis", from J. Strauss' "Die Fledermaus". Hope to see some reactions soon😆haha. Thank you so much! Be well!

I saw them live not that long before this performance, experiencing it live, with the atmosphere and the dynamics you just can't get from a recording, the visual spectacle, etc... It is pure magic. It is amazing how well their voices blend, despite the huge differences in technique. That aspect is missing in the later version Nightwish did with Floor and Henk (which both are very very capable in their own right, but do not manage to create the magic of this version). All that said, if you listen carefully, there seem to be at least 2 mistakes in Tarja's part in this version. Considering she was actually coming down with a flu and fighting fever while doing this performance, that isn't that surprising, but makes it even more amazing what she pulls off. But what all the members of the band know at that point, but Tarja doesn't, is this being the last minutes of the last time they are performing together. This all makes for this not being their best ever performance of this song, merely the best one which got recorded. The interaction between the singers was often more intense in earlier performances.

Aye. I was there and this was not an exceptional Nightwish performance. It's just that they had hauled in all the engineers and camera operators to record it and make it sound good there, too and then the fact we learned later that this was the very last concert for Tarja. But for someone in the audience many other Nighwish shows were equally magical. They are real pros with steely work ethic.

Floor's approach to Phantom is really different than Tarja's. Floor restructured Christine's part to have much more of a dynamic build from the first verse up to the final verse, and she also uses a dynamics in the crescendo as well. Henk, who played the Phantom for many years in the Netherlands, stays fairly steady dynamically to balance that out. Also a heads up: The hard onsets Floor uses in the later part of the crescendo are on purpose to make Christine sound crazier and crazier.

Also Elizabeth said she was singing an octave lower than Christine originally did for the song. I’m tone deaf now, courtesy of the USMC, and multiple Deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan in 05-2010 range, haha. I used to have perfect pitch, played woodwinds when younger, befor that, could sing pretty decent, was first chair and of signing, was among the leads. I never learned to read sheet music all that well, as I didn’t have too, I could listen and learn after I learned the very basics, so I can’t play to save my life anymore, as I don’t know what to do, and when, based off music, I only learned the very basics, the rest, was learned by hearing and playing I learned to play clarinet by sound, and emulation of my older sister, and played with 3.5 or highest Reed from the start, lower, softer…nothing but horrendous squeaks and squeals. I know. I’m weird, I usually played with like a 4 or 4.5 reed, since I was 6. For those who don’t know is an extremely hard read. And usually leads to terrible squeaks and squeals, but I worked opposite for some reason.

To be clear lot me bragging, I was born with whatever talents I have and am, or was good at, it’s not skill, sure some skill after experience exists, but it’s nothing trained for or learned, was all pure talent, I was given by god or nature, whatever your views. I didn’t work at it, to be good. And just learn, I always did that. And now that my hearing is very damaged, I can’t do it anymore, in way that’s good, cause I never learned, how to fully read music, play, etc. so definitely a double edged sword; like I still hear things, kinda/mostly; but they sound off, and I’m always a ln octave or note away at the very least.

You got that Hei ystäväni right The Y you used was still somewhere between the phonetic U & Y. That Finnish Y is like the German Ü which French spells U (without other vowels). In Europe that sound is found from the Finnish related languages in Northwestern Russia through Scandinavia to France, then through Germany to Hungary, + in Turkish.

If memory serves, Floor joined the band in 2013 or so, and Anette joined before her, so this performance would be much older. And yes, you got the right one.

I have to trust Elizabeth Zharoff, The Charismatic Voice on YT, an opera singer and vocal coach when she said Marko's highest note was G5. Marko was ill, Tarja was ill, Jukka was very ill. Tarja "Supremacy" Woodstock festival in Poland is a good one. Also Within Temptation ft. Tarja "Paradise" live at Hellfest, 2016 I think it was. You would hear Sharon too. I love how much fun they have together on stage, and the audience loves it. For more Marko. Nightwish "The Islander" Tampere 2015 is a must. Marko is going to surprise you again, with his cleans. Such a beautiful voice. His own composition. Folky, Celtic vibes, brought by the Nightwish multi-instrumentalist Troy Donockley from the UK. Just a moment ago I saw a reaction to the Islander. The reactor was blown away by Marko's vocals. Troy plays a dozen instruments and sings too. For Marko with his rock voice. The Nightwish rendition of the Pink Floyd song "High Hopes" Helsinki 2005, the same concert they performed "the Phantom" you just reacted to. Better than the original, heavier. OK let's call it a tie. Pink Floyd fans approve the Nightwish version. Delain ft. Marko - The Gathering - Masters of Rock 2017 Delain ft. Marko Nothing Left Live You would hear Charlotte too. Delain and Within Temptation are Dutch bands. There is something special about the collaboration between musicians from Finland and The Netherlands.

Marko has a talent to always blend perfectly with his duetpartners! Love this interpretation of the Phantom! All songs together with Delain sound great! But this,the Islander and the High Hopes cover/tribute are masterpieces. And surely the songs of his soloalbum like Stones or The Voice of my Father! Like many reactors who came to hear Tarja you are impressed by Marko - lol. Thx that you react to this one!👍😁

In Planet Hell Tarja and Marco also duet beautifully. I would also love to see you react to Tarja in Stargazers (a song from Nightwish's second album, Oceanborn, from 1998) and to Dark Chest of Wonders (Once, 2004).

Another awesome Tarja&Marko duet live is "Slaying the Dreamer" from the "End of an Era" DVD. The version with Floor live in Buenos Aires is also great.

A bit of detail on this. The song wasn't just a one-off that Nightwish performed live. They covered the song on their 2002 album "Century Child", which was Marco's first album with the band.. Also, the intro to this is a bit longer than the studio track, though the arrangement of this is the same. That is important, because if.. no.. *WHEN* you react to Floor Jansen performing this with Henk Poort on the Dutch TV show "Beste Zangers", you'll hear the same arrangement of the song. That is the Nightwish arrangement of the song, as they (Floor and Henk) used the arrangement from the studio album for their performance, while what you are seeing with Tarja is performed live. Second, Marco steals the show in this one. We all expect an operatically trained singer to hit the note E6 that Christine hits (side note: Nightwish tunes down one whole step for this song, so the note Tarja hits here would be a D6, if using standard A440 tuning, but on the sheet music, would still be written as an E6). However, everyone forgets that Eric (The Phantom) is the bad guy. He causes someone to die in the musical! So while the musical is still sounding bright and poppy (it's a musical), Marco brings out a more sinister Phantom, and that's what sticks here. Also to note: This is Marco, after he had surgery on his vocal chords that went wrong. From that, he almost lost his entire voice, and did lose his entire falsetto range. So he had to learn how to sing all over again. Now you see his range, yet he can do even better. Oh.. After that surgery he had taken on a vocal coach to help him to sing properly again.. Some vocal coach named Floor Jansen.

You must to react to TARJA - SUPREMACY, If you choose the Woodstock versión, you have to know that was the end and probably she was a little bit tired, BUT U KNOW WHAT? that's my favorite version, I love her. She's a master!

This was the last show for Tarja - but she did not know it! This End of an Era Show - Everdream is a special song - Tuomas knows what’s happening after the show - You can do a double reaction to Everdream with Floor’s version at Wacken 2013

Just found you, and only found Nightwish recently. Sadly, this is the day Marko announced he's leaving Nightwish for personal reasons nobody familiar with this good man could disagree with. Whatever the recent challenges you've faced, you're not alone in these times, and my best wishes to you. I enjoy your analytical approach to the vocals and the time you take with the lyrics. With voices this good, it's easy to forget the lyrics and just think of the vocals as instruments. Thanks for what you do. BTW: Try not to get dragged into the Tarja vs Annette vs Floor nonsense. They're all amazing, and each with unique qualities. It's easy to respect and enjoy them all. It's just preference or mood. Again, thanks! And check out Troy, their multi-instrumentalist. Brilliant, like the rest of them.

I like it very much, when professional classic vocalist comment on modern rock, metal bands. It is the most profund way and its good too see, that the quality of music in this music area is much higher then in other areas of modern music. I think its natural, that professional musicians like sometimes get out a little bit of Mozart and Beethoven and enjoy the more radical hard way of music. But Strauss, Wagner composed as well hard, deep type of music. In this time, there was just now Synthesizer, keyboards and e-guitar. It would be interesting to think, what they would have made out of these instruments?

The Kinslayer is a very under-rated NW song w/ Tarja! I think you would enjoy that as well.
@PatrickHuttonАй бұрын
This has probably been covered but here goes any way. 1) Tarja is a fully trained opera singer she's now a three octave mezzo soprano then she was a liens soprano. 2) It's fair to see that she had fully found her voice by the time of this concert. 3) She was treated badly by the male members of the band led by Tuomas. 4) The fallout from her sacking adversely affected Annette who the band employed after Tarja and likewise didn't treat her very well dropping her when she was pregnant and taking on Floor. 5) By the time Floor came onboard the male members seemed to have grown up enough to be able to treat her with respect which was pretty much the only respect that Tarja wanted. All very sad as Tarja is one of those few once in a lifetime singers.

Hei ystäväni! Kiitos tervehdyksestäsi. You also pronounce Tarja very well. One very easy rule of the Finnish language is that the stress is always on the first syllable (your pronunciation of Turunen was very good too apart from the stress).

This one was from the DVD "End of an Era" shot in October 2005. I suggest you dig even deeper - "Dead Boy's Poem" from their first live DVD "From Wishes to Eternity" recorded in 2000. And if you want to go crazy, you could do a double reaction video and react to Floor's version of the song from the DVD "Decades: Live in Buenos Aires" from 2018. Other ideas for double reactions: 1. "Slaying the Dreamer" with Tarja from "End of an Era" (2005) vs. Floor's take in "Live in Buenos Aires" (2018). 2. "Ever Dream" with Tarja from "End of an Era" (2005) vs. Floor in "Showtime, Storytime - live in Wacken Open Air" (2013) 3. "Sleeping Sun" (iconic ballad) with Tarja from "End of an Era" (2005) vs. Floor in "Vehicle of Spirit - live in Tampere Ratina Stadium" (2015) (Tampere is my hometown so anything from this show is highly recommended :D ) 4. "The Siren" with Tarja from "End of an Era" (2005) vs. Floor in "Endless Forms Most Beautiful Tour -video" (fanmade but decent quality): kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2OXpYJ5f6d1f7M
