1st movement - Gigantic battle against fate. Very intense and ends with Beethoven losing. 2nd movement - Beethoven is living in his own dream world so he can collect all his energies to fight again. 3rd movement - Suddenly the fight continues, and we all know only one can stand by the end of this movement. 4th movement - VICTORY!!!!!!!

+James Clift i see your point. Haydn I would consider to be the composer who started the classical era. But Bach, being a composer at the end of the Baroque era, I think, was sort of giving a different sound to the time. When listening to works by Corelli, Buxtehude, Vivaldi, I notice differences when compared to Bach's work. I think Bach modernized music in a sense. He may have just been changing around the baroque elements a little, while others were progressing, but his approach is what I think revolutionized music. Just think: what would classical music have been like without Bach?

This is true freedom of expression of a genius. Not a desire to conquer anything. He did not need to write this piece for money or love, he did not care for those things. It's funny how prevalent certain chords were. The opening of this movement has only got chords I, IV and V (like Gluck's Orfeo hundred years before him), and the first chord we hear that isn't one of them is almost 50 seconds in. Listen carefully. Simplicity at its triumphant best!

bolero by ravel stayed at tonic for the entirety of 15-or-so minutes (but i guess that's irrelevant to the topic cuz it's more like a test of composing techniques rather than a symphony of high artistic value) but many early sonatas by mozart also stayed within the I IV V paradigm, so it's not very uncommon to hear composers from the classical era to shift between only three chords for the entirety of a theme (or even an entire movement in certain exceptional cases)

but i get what you mean, you're trying to say that beethoven is a master at producing a grandiose sensation by using very little or no chord change (like the bridge to climax in the 6th symphony 1st movement), and i have to agree with you, it is simplicity that produces the ultimate effect of triumph (like the opening of 9th sym, 1st mov.)

Precisely. But well spotted with the mentioning of Bolero, nearly forgot about that!

Dilan Abdah What about Samuel Barber's "Adagio for strings?" I must admit I only came to know it because I love the film "Platoon."
