For me - Allan Pettersson's music is NOT Depressing as is so often charged. It is rather music that accomplishes a profound Catharsis and so is music that cleanses and restores. - For me - he is the most highly UNDERRATED composer of the 20th century

A vastly entertaining post. As always the huge research you have made pays dividends. My wife is Swedish and can't stand his music, but I'm an admirer. I just wonder what would have happened if he had studied with Hindemith. The mind boggles. You really educate everyone interested in music with these uploads and are doing a fantastic job. One of my favourite composers, maybe it is the bittersweet sadness, or how to express it, that resonate with myself. It is strange how negative things like sickness, loneliness, drug abuse etc call forth great artists. RIP AP.

I was 13 when he died. I didn't knew about him but on television they showed a documentary about him. It was more than a two hour long dirge and I got absolutely blown away. He just took place among the greats in an instant Wonderful to hear someone outside Sweden talk about him. When I studied music it became apparent that he was an outsider because his music was never mentioned (Måndagsgruppen was always mentioned) and if I brought up his music in discussions it was like if Pettersson's outcast were passed on to me. However; Christian Lindberg has made an excellent job in creating interest about Pettersson - one can only hope that his music will be played more than... about never.

Great video! Currently I am reading the Swedish journalist Leif Aare's biography of Pettersson which is a good book. It was written in 1978. By the way, the "Petter" in his name does not rhyme with the English "Peter" as you pronounce it, rather more with the English word "better".

When my English yet cosmopolitan, classical music loving husband mentioned this name - authentically - my ears pricked up and I have been careful to respect the Swedish vowel ever since. My father who was a conductor knew Allan Pettersson back in the 40 and 50s when Allan was a violist in Royal Stockholm Philharmonic (back then it was called Stockholm Concert Society Orchestra) said that Allan was a person full of humour and charm in his younger days. Was always curious learning the musical craft my Dad gave away all books by Berlioz-Strauss in orchestration.

I get this request quite a bit and while I'm more than open to doing a video on post-minimalism or holy minimalism, I'm _extremely_ hesitant to do one of these videos on living composers, as this series functions as career-encompassing retrospectives in a full historical context and you just can't do that as long as a composer's career is still ongoing. I hesitate to add to the already daunting list of requests - but please consider Calliope Tsoupaki. I've just bought the Complete and Utter Pettersson, and have listened to the first and second Symphonies - I love them, and don't hear the music (so far at least) as depressing.

An excellent clip in every way. In the past I have found Pettersson's music to be too bleak for my tastes. That said, I am tempted to dive into some of his work again. The 7th Symphony in particular, is a good place to start. Thank you Thomas !

That's a great idea and I've considered it, but at the end of the day, there's a lot of things I'd like to do with this channel that I simply don't have the time to do. I have over 42 hours of content already, and going back through every second to add subtitles would take months. Not gonna lie, I had to look this up, and learned that swedes are known as rutabagas in the United States; I had no idea that there was a definition for "swede" other than as a demonym. American English strikes again!

​@@ClassicalNerd: Rutabaga is also derived from the Swedish word for the Swede/Rutabaga (specifically in Småland dialect). So Swedes at various points in history obviously really liked those things, for them to be synonymous with them in almost all Anglophone parts of the world (and, apparently, France). In most of Sweden, it's known as kålrot (cabbage/kale root). Also, although pronouncing it as Peterson as a non-Swedish speaker is understandable and acceptable, the double t means both e sounds should be short ones (like in the English word "pet", so pet-eh'r-sohn)
