Inspired by tone clusters I’ve been messaging around with “drone clusters”; stacking tanpura drones on top of each other in various configurations, and also blending synth drones and tanpura drones into clusters. I think someone more sophisticated than me could apply them in numerous ways and I think they would have equal application in western classical and Indian classical.

I like how you don't upload the experiments you're referring to

As a music theory buff, I love your categorizations of tone cluster, and I'd go so far as to say that they ought to come into common use.

Really well done!!! While earning my BA in music I came to really appreciate any professor that could present some of the more modern and complexed western theory practices in a concise and understandable way. Definitely not a strength for many, but, you nailed it! Thank you for posting, Look forward to checking out your other videos.

If you thought this was good ... well, let's just say that my production quality has gotten leaps and bounds better (such that I encourage those who are new to my channel to work backwards through my content).

This video has been quite influential for me. I’ve been using them in recent guitars composition I’ve made recently. While chromatic tone clusters are BUNCHES OF FUN😧 to actually play on a guitar, they make quite a sound. Also the diatonic clusters are easier, and can be used in many settings. Thanks

I agree with @SeadogDriftwood. I am working on an idea involving close, microtonal clusters and I would think they would be a type of aggregate cluster - not easily written with standard notation. Or do you thing microtonal clusters (like Penderecki's) are a whole different beast - perhaps a fifth category?

I've also seen some instances of clusters being used to a similar effect as octaves, where a melody is clearly outlined (an example is Rautavaara's first Piano Concerto. Could you briefly elaborate on that?

This may seem like an odd question, but what I’ve always wondered is, if you were to play a melodic line using two of three note clusters, which note would be carrying the most “tonal weight”? If a music piece was in the key of Cmaj and you did a little melodic line of clusters, would it be most important for the highest, middle, or lowest note in the cluster to be a note from the Cmaj scale?

Thank you! I did my Bachelor's in Composition at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and am currently in the second year of my MFA in Composition and Theory at Brandeis University. (If you haven't already, check out my newer videos-they're a lot better-produced than these really old ones!)

Are tone clusters the same as secundal harmony?
@ClassicalNerd7 жыл бұрын
Indeed they are! A little bit more depth on that may be found in one of my newer videos: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5Krda1sr9ZpkLc
