Engine is looking nice Sam. When I built mine, a cool trick I learned was to tape the screen and use modeling clay rolled into a ball. Once the pan was set on, it would push the clay down and give you your clearance. You can put a little oil on the clay and it will not stick to the pan when you remove it. Modeling clay works good on the piston to valve clearance too. Can't wait to hear it run.

I think we have all had the same problem with oil pump pickup tubes. I even had one fall off while on the first test drive about 20 years ago, and I had welded it to the pump. Will not stay that way. I agree with Ziggy on welding a tab to the tube and bolt it to the pump. It seems that all the after market tubes don't press hold like the factory ones. And I have never seen that install tool you have there. I'm always beating them on with a wrench. Keep Rocking it out Sam!!!

Also I've never seen that gasket between the pump and main cap. I would mount it without it. Just my two cents. Keep Rocking!!!

Looks good Sam! You're accumulating a lot of nice tools too. I haven't done any engine work or kept up with it for over 10 years but used to use Felpro silicone one piece pan gaskets. They seemed to seal well but maybe some of the guys with current experience would have some thoughts too. Keep up the good work - you're doing a much better job than many!

i have the same 327 bore .60 over with the milling high volume oil pump , what i ran into problems with to much oil pumping to the top of the block , found out you got to run a deep sump oil pan and high valve covers, oil would jump into the valve cover breathers.

Best practice is to weld a metal strip to the pickup tube so you can bolt it to a pump end bolt...The pump is cast iron Sam and welding steel to it is tricky...The oil pump gasket will affect the depth of dizzy to oil pump contact so make sure the dizzy seats in deep enough with the gasket installed.

Thanks for the info Ziggy, I may try and braze it on there or do the metal strip

weld a bracket on the pick up and then drill a hole to bolt it on the pump housing if your not a professional welder don't weld it 90percent of the time the pick up falls off

Awesome Sam I love detail like that mostly because I know how much of a pain that is. However it is sure to help someone that has pressed on an oil pickup tube only to have it come off. Perhaps the copper gasket is because its a high volume pump? Take care man!

Sam we use to use a snap punch around the tube and red locktite

its better to make a bracket weld the bracket ro the pickup then bolt it to the pump

You need the press fit to be more sure the tube and pump don’t suck air

Sam you are doing a great job, but on a stock engine degreeing a cam is not a must.
@TxStang6 жыл бұрын
very few times the cam card is exactly as what you measure , 105 on a 106 cam card spec is darn close . Everything man made will have tolerances in the specs . Also on a flat tappet cam the flat larger bottoms of the lifters will move sooner on the up and fall slower on the drop than if it was a roller cam set up which has less surface area and is more accurate . hope that makes sense .

And you put steel freeze plugs on your newly built engine? Why wouldn’t you put brass ones in. Unbelievable....
