To be fair this is musical theater which tends to sound different from whatever's playing on the radio and pretty much always has been at least somewhat different. Since musicals don't get as famous as often now we don't hear songs like this very often

I have just watched this film again, God knows just how many times I have watched now, but I am a man 90 years of age, and I saw it when I was a teenager, and I NEVER tire of it. I doubt that I have ever heard two singers of today, who could do justice to this movie, in fact hearing todays singers, it sounds as though they are singing in a foreign language, as I can barely understand the words half of the time

My father and his disciple were guitarists who would play all English songs like "Come September" , "Berlin melodies: "Do re Me fa " from The sound of music and this one. THey would play almost all the melodies of the sixties on their Guitars. Having listened to such music in what was once a small village in a remote corner of India and now speaking about it to someone who is from that place itself is a good feeling. I wonder if Oklahama is still full of "barley and plenty of room for the June bugs to roam". Hope to visit it one day. Thank you for the memories.

I can see why this is the favourite of Queen Elizabeth. It opened in the spring of 1943, when the war in Europe was at its lowest ebb, and it was like a well needed ray of sunshine. Since it was such an immense hit, Rodgers and Hammerstein always donated a block of seats to the American soldiers on their way to Europe to remind them of what they were fighting for: "We know we belong to the land/ And the land we belong to is grand!"

I worked in theater for 30 plus years constructing sets and prop. The last 25 at a university, trying to show the younger folks about being a stage carpenter. Oklahoma was the last large musical I worked on before I was retired. This was also the last show my Mom saw when I took her to a performance. Seeing this and listening to it really makes me teary eyed. Memories! 😢

Classic R&H…an older woman “mentors” a younger woman who is trying to find love (or is someone who expresses an ideal…”Bali Hai” in South Pacific; “You’ll Never Walk Alone” in Carousel). Aunt Eller doesn’t have her own song, but she leads things off here and has plenty of “solid lines” like “…plenty of heart and plenty of hope”. “Carousel” was on the other day and I agree with all the commenters on McRae’s voice. Just an incredible strong baritone and an excellent actor. My early career started in Oklahoma. I heard this sung plenty (it’s shortened as “the state song” but everyone still spells it out at the end)

I remember first hearing this song when I was just a little kid and immature. Hahaha, I thought it was bland. Then I remember hearing it again, after I'd grown up in Oklahoma, spent my childhood there, made all my best lifelong friends there, and had an amazing time in high school there. It was at a play in a real-life theater that my class got to see our senior year. When I heard that song then, I didn't make fun of it. All my buddies and I stood up and it was one of the best moments of my life. This song really means a lot to us Okies. It may seem bland, but it just represents our way of life and all the great people there. I will always stand for this song, and remember the great times I had with the crew.

Gordon McCrea will always own the character of Curly to me. He put his stamp on so many characters in musicals in the 40s & 50s. I think most of the Rogers & Hammerstein shows and others like On Moonlight Bay with Doris Day. Shirley Jones seemed to be the go to actor/singer at the time too. As they were in Carousel together. And she wound up in Music Man with comparable Robert Preston and tiny Ron Howard.

Always loved OKLAHOMA. Became state 1907. Tulsa massacre was 1921. I am embarrassed to say how recently I learned of massacre and I am unable to enjoy Rogers and Hammerstein piece as much now. Whites didn’t want HOPE and CHANCE for new beginning for African Americans

My pop Warner team would just keep chanting the part where they say "Oklahoma" before we would do Oklahoma Drills. When I was younger that chant scared be to death. It was my biggest fear. Six years later I'm still playing football and one of the best on my high school team. That chant and hearing it on here, still sends chills and a little fear down my spine...
