Some of the best movie dialogue ever throughout this film. Top tier 70’s crime this one.

Wonderful , gripping dialogue taken almost verbatim from the 1970 novel ( highly recommend reading it if you haven't already ) . Peter Boyle as 'Dillon' is one of Boyle's finest roles , and is oftentimes overlooked . Not a bad moment in the novel , nor in this film adaptation of the novel .

This was, along with Night of the Hunter, Mitchum’s greatest performance. Steven Keats was a fine actor who left us way too soon.

Any time you read an article listing Mitchum's performances rarely is this one even mentioned and that's a crime in itself. I fully agree with your assessment.

The greatest crime film of all time. I realize some will find this film boring because it's not done in a flashy Hollywood style. This story shows how the underworld and the law REALLY works.

When the quality of the dialogue in a film is as high as this the flash doesn’t matter in the end. Excellent Acting and casting of course helped make the magic happen too.

One of the most realistic crime films of all time, gangsters and mob guys ain't loud and violent like they're usually portrayed they keep a low profile and move like ghosts with a lot to lose.

Mitchum’s monologue here is exactly what I heard and learned growing up in Philly from my grandfather and men like him-not the crime angle, but being a man of your word, delivering on what you say you can or don’t say it. My grandfather always told me, “Nobody gives a shit what you mean to do-what matters is what you do. Everyone’s got good intentions-and you see how the world is from that shit. If you’re a man, you do what you say you’ll do , and don’t ever leave anyone holding the bag. “

The elite of 70's crime thrillers featuring a totally unromantic depiction of the mob. Very few of that era can compete with this film and though he was probably a tad too old for the role, Robert Mitchum shined as the titular character.
@midnightcassettelibrary51719 ай бұрын
To me the older age thing totally worked because it really hits home that this is a guy who is almost outta gas but he’s still out there in the mix risking it all. It enhances the idea of a low level grunt who never climbed the ranks how he expected and blew many years of his life grinding hard while not really progressing. To me it adds potency to a sense of tragedy to the character. I am biased though because I did not grow up on early Mitchum so that young to contrast isn’t really something that would stick out to me

@@midnightcassettelibrary5171 The reason why he said Mitchum is a tad too old is because the character is described as being in his mid 40's in the book. However, I will admit it's a minor complaint. Bob was absolutely on fire in this movie and his performance is one of the best he ever gave. I NEVER would have wanted anyone else.

Why Bob Michum wasn't nominated for this film I'll never understand. This guy was a real pro. Steve McQueen should have also been nominated in 1973, for Papillion. What a huge injustice.

Mindblowing McQueen was never nominated for an Oscar--ONCE. Goes to show how 'political' it was, you had to do a lot of ass-kissing which McQueen despised, he was his own man.

Great gritty film. Closer to reality of a small-time hustler than a lot of over done films about street life. Eddie is a bit of a 'loser' just in the fact he can't seem to get ahead. Really love this one.

@johnhughes90192 жыл бұрын
The film's ending is different from that of the novel's. Certain liberties had to be taken ; a few of the chapters of the novel were left out of the film ; others were embellished for cinematic sake (e.g. when Jackie Brown is arrested at the train station : no car crashes nor gunfire took place in the book). Eddie Coyle's demise is the same in the film as it is in the book.
