I cannot listen to the gentle Allegretto third movt. of the Scottish Dances without a mental picture of the young Gordon Jackson sitting in the heather on the hilltop overlooking the sea with Rona Anderson (his future wife) in the 1949 feature, 'Floodtide'.....in the same way as the opening Andantino from the first set of English Dances counjures a picture of the young Hayley Mills - who Arnold was to meet when he wrote the score for 'Whistle Down the Wind'! BTW. the sleeve shows a photo of the ballet 'Solitaire' for which Arnold wrote some original music, and used bits of the English Dances. The lovely tender Sarabande and boisterous Polka appear on the CD release....but without the cover pic! Ps A word of appreciation for Keith Hensby's sleeve designs.....always interesting!

Wonderful Sound!! This is a bit of a famous album and now I can hear why. What a room tone, it's just perfect. Walthamstow Hall and the Lyrita recording team for the big win :)

Thank for your comment! Yes this a very sought after record. I see the median price for it on Discogs is £95! ($124 US). The Decca engineers that Lyrita employed had a field day 😀. The music is so inventive, tuneful and wonderfully scored.

Wonderful sound indeed! It was engineered by John Dunkerley and produced by James Walker. Dunkerley was one of the greats, and promoted and developed the use of the 'Decca Tree', a boom with (usually) five microphones slung above the orchestra. He now runs courses for budding sound engineers at Abbey Road.

Lebhafte und wunderschöne Interpretation dieser beiden modernen doch ethnisch komponierten Tänze mit farbenreichen doch perfekt entsprechenden Tönen aller Instrumente. Der intelligente und geniale Komponist-Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Orchester im veränderlichen Tempo und mit künstlerisch kontrollierter Dynamik. Diese Meisterwerke sollen außer Großbritannien viel häufiger aufgeführt und viel höher geschätzt werden. Einfach faszinierend!
