EMI made a remarkable series of Britten recordings in the early 80s, I suppose in someway to counter Decca's almost monopoly of the market with their (mainly) composer-conducted series. I have both Decca and EMI versions, and in some works tend to prefer the latter - although conventional wisdom says the Deccas are definitive! Apart from the above, Rattle/CBSO in Sinfonia da Requiem (EL 27 02631) are magnificent in spectacular sound in Warwick Univ. Arts Centre (eng. Michael Sheady). Elisabeth Söderström/Armstrong/WNO in Our Hunting Fathers (ASD 4397)). Rattle/CBSO Young Apollo, Canadian carnival, etc. Neville Marriner/Minnesota in YPG, P Grimes 4 Sea Ints, and the premiere of Men of Goodwill. Not sure if you've explored any (or all!) of the above, but particularly the Sinfonia da Requiem I'd highly recommend.

I don't know all of the recordings you mention, but I have soft spot for the GDR Eterna label's Sinfonia da Requiem with Kempe and the Dresden orchestra kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYbVnnygiNBqj7c You're right about Decca's Britten recordings being considered definitive though!

@@ClassicsAndVinylThanks for the link for the Kempe, I've never heard it! If you don't have the Rattle Sinfonia da Requiem, beg, borrow or steal a copy of the vinyl of the German pressed DMM version (EL 27 0263 1), it is a sonic delight! The opening has tremendous impact with its bass drum well caught...and the side drum beautifully 'crisp' in the Dies irae.

@@ClassicsAndVinylEr. Don't want to hark-on about it, but if you did want a copy of the Rattle/CBSO, there is a brand new copy on eBay being sold by niwi-2291 £7.50 +p and p. In fact I know who this is....he is my ex business partner in our British music mail order enterprise. This would be a copy that hasn't been played, as he didn't care for Britten!
