No truer word have been uttered than "I want to read this to understand all the memes from Sparknotes". They have goaded me into so many books...

Well, 10 months late, but I'm going to do Classics 2021.

I read animal farm not knowing too much about the history of the soviet union so it was a bit of a headache to get through. the other day I read a review and they said something like, „I think it‘s about pigs and how humans and animals are equals“ - I think would be pretentious to laugh at that because if I hadn‘t known before, the book wouldn‘t have told me :P so it definitely helps to do some research before ;)

I really like Lord of the Flies. It has a lot of interesting imagery and themes in it. I love how chaotic it is by the end. Animal Farm is another book I enjoyed, when we studied it in school we studied it alongside the Russian Revolution. I plan on rereading it this year but also refreshing myself on the events its based on. I am interested in the other books you have picked out as well! This video reminded me how much I love classic literature.

Oh that's great!! I'm definitely excited for Animal Farm! Now that I'm a bit older, I'm really eager to finally understand what it's all about. I never really thought I'd be one for classics, but I'm actually super stoked to read all of these books! All the best with your reading! ;D

”This dude, his name is Hamlet“, that cracked me up! 🤣 I‘ve never heard of this challenge but I’m all about it! I’ve decided to catch up on some classics since the beginning of the summer. I’ve read “Le rouge et le noir” and the two volumes of "Le deuxième sexe”. Long, but great reads! I’ve also read the really short “Claude Gueux”, by Victor Hugo, and it was so interesting!

You will find, if you re-read the classics as you age, you find different perspectives and might even like something you did not enjoy when you were younger.

What a cool concept! I am following another bookstagrammer who inspired me to add a few classics to my own TBR this year. I'm hoping to read Dante's Inferno, though I'm terribly anxious about it. I'm also hoping to read Jane Eyre.
@TheArtisanGeek4 жыл бұрын
Ooh that's so exciting! Dante's Inferno definitely sounds daunting, but I hope you'll enjoy it! :D I actually changed my TBR, because I felt it lacking classics outside the western literary canon - very excited to talk about those ones now as well! :)

I love hearing you pronounce those Dutch names in the midst of speaking English 😂 Lord of the Flies is one of my favourite books of all time, despite the fact that it gives me nightmares every time I read it lol. Would love to see an update on how you’re doing with the classics!

Frankenstein is my favorite classic to date. I also haven't read Austen yet but plan to read at least one this year. I didn't know the challenge was happening and planned on reading 6 classics this year. Maybe I might get to 12 it'd be a blast.

Oh that's great! I think this definitely would be a great way to get in some more classics! Happy reading!!

Oh. Some of those I've read and am excited to see someone else enjoy. Frankenstein is particularly good as is Animal Farm. Now I am curious to read The Midwich Cuckoos. You have some interesting picks and looks like an enjoyable reading year ahead.

catzilla thank you! I’m really excited for all of these - Frankenstein and No Longer Human are definitely high on my list :)

I found an audiobook of animal farm performed by Timothy West, who also performs Shakespeare and it is a delight really. I'd recommend giving it a listen.

I love a classic! I want to read O Pioneers!, The Leopard, Anna Karenina, Bleak House and Frankenstein this year. I'd love to re-read Dream of the Red Chamber but it's five long volumes so that might be a big ask.
@TheArtisanGeek4 жыл бұрын
Oh that's lovely! I have been thinking about trying out Anna Karenina! There's a debut YA retelling coming out in March by Jenny Lee which I have a copy of :) How was reading Dream of the Red Chamber? So impressive you read it!

Twelve classics, hmmm. I do own Monte Cristo (already mentioned on another video), all 7 Jane Austen novels, and the complete collection of Sherlock Holmes books, which I think are considered classics? I've already read the Sherlock stories in the past, and listened to Pride and Prejudice twice on audiobook. Love that story. So 7 of those unread stories I do wish to read this year. =) This made me realize that I read several classics in high school, two of which you mentioned: Of Mice and Men and Lord of the Flies. I think I liked Of Mice and Men well enough, but I don't think I was particularly fond of Lord of the Flies.
@TheArtisanGeek4 жыл бұрын
Oh that's great!! I'd love to have the complete collection of Sherlock Holmes! Which one would you reckon is your favourite one? But yeah the #ClassicsCommunity is a great way to stay motivated to read more classics :) I just finished the one written by Osamu Dazai, which was really good. There are a lot of mixed feelings concerning Lord of the Flies so I'm really excited to see what I will eventually make of it :)
@RoseRamblesYT4 жыл бұрын
@@TheArtisanGeek Oh gosh, it's been 6 years at least since I've read the Sherlock stories, so I'd honestly have to do a reread to say which story is my favorite. I do hope to read at least one classic next month. Probably Monte Cristo, considering the positive things I'm hearing about it. =D Your review on Lord of the Flies will be a big refresher for me, since it has been over a decade since I read it, haha.

"So Hamlet is about this guy named Hamlet-" 😆🤣 My TBRs sound WAY worse, Haha. You did a great job! Hamlet is lovely 💕 I hope you really enjoy it, if you get to it! Some people find him too mopey, but I fell in love with him in high school 🤺I recommend watching an adaption of it, to get the full feels. The Branagh adaption is quite stunning! It's nice to meet you, Seji! I'm doing the #classicscommunity challenge, too 😃 Here's my TBR, if you're interested (but I've actually added Things Fall Apart to it, since making the video): kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6mkmqWEnax_fMU Midwich sounds AMAZING! Can't wait to watch more of your vids! Take care 😊 -Christy

Of those, I've read Pride and Prejudice, Of Mice and Men, and Things Fall Apart. Both of the latter two I read over 20 years ago and I will say that both basically ripped my heart out, and stomped on it. I'd actually like to read Things Fall Apart again as I now have more experience with African literature and that was my first. Also, after many years of having my heart ripped out and stomped upon, I no longer have a heart, just a lump of coal, so I should be in better shape in that regard. Regarding Steinbeck, I have also read The Grapes of Wrath and enjoyed it, but Of Mice and Men and The Red Pony were too sad for me. Pride and Prejudice is worth the hype, IMO. It's a very funny and sarcastic book. Once you've read the book if you can find time to watch the BBC adaptation with Colin Firth, well... I would do it. And it will rip your heart out but only temporarily, it will put it back at the end. Good old Jane Austen.
