I think you should move the tapestry above the fire extinguisher. It is there for safety reasons. If you have a substitute, they won't know where it is. I think it will look fine above the tapestry. Love your videos!

I agree with this comment. It’s not only for subs, but for a genuine emergency, which could happen. Fire alarms, extinguishers, etc. cannot be hidden. Check with your admin first. I think it may be against fire code. Room is looking great!!

I hope you never need the fire extinguisher but if you do you'll need fast. You'll also be at least a little panicked and maybe not your sharpest.

I completely agree with this comment. I am all about classroom asthetics, but it is against fire code to cover it. You need to have it visible for an emergency. Any adult or child should be able to find it immediately!

I hope you didn't take offense from the comment. PLEASE consult your Principal about the tapestry covering the extinguisher. I learned the hard way when the fire marshall came to my classroom and gave me a list of things to change. Don't get me wrong I like the library and will definitely take some of your ideas. However, safety first. If you move it up the library will still look amazing. Your students will still enjoy it. As teachers we focus on how it looks because we want it to be inviting and the students really look at what we put in it....the books 📚 or other materials. They like what we're excited about. Not so sure the fire Marshall will allow the fire hydrant to be covered. A stranger in your room, like a sub, will not know where it is. I have been in a school as a sub that caught on fire.

Ha,me again. I would like to give Honorable mention to Betty Dugas, my all-time favorite teacher. 1980. She was my English teacher,focused on vocabulary . I can remember her voice,when she taught me the word ‘entrepreneur’! I love her for that. In 2001,I sent her a letter of admiration and thanks. She wrote back that every teacher looks forward to such an acknowledgment of their teaching,and that I gave her that very thing! I cried🥰

I know this is old, and I am not a teacher, but here's an idea for a classroom library: When kids want to take books home (if they're allowed), you have a paper version of a list that reads Library book due Date for Classroom... that states the day it was given and when it's due. You could laminate the list and use an erasable pen so you don't have to make more of the cards. This way you can check the list every morning and remind kids that they need to return the book, and maybe write a note to their families if they haven't returned them. We used to have these old book checkout cards in library books, but that would maybe be too much trouble for you ;)

You're not allowed to hide the fire extinguisher. They have to be able to see that you have one if someone else needs to get to it if you are not in the room. I would ask about that. Think about it this way if a substitute was in your room would they be able to find it?

If you wanted to you could place the hard cover Elephant and Piggie books on the shelf without the basket... I put my entire collection on a shelf...it helps the kiddos see the titles better.

The library setup is so smart, and I love the book-bin labels, but I agree with others that hiding and blocking off the fire extinguisher is dangerous. If you have a supply in there, they will never find it. That could make you or your school liable in case of a fire. Also, from unfortunate experience as a teacher, I would not have book shelves on an angle; books will inevitably end up slipping behind the angled shelves, a disgusting amount of dirt will accumulate there, etc. Also, more importantly, kids will lean against the book shelves, and unsecured bookshelves will tip. Save yourself from having a near heart attack like me two years ago, and keep bookshelves against the wall. No one was hurt as I was the one who meant against the shelves, but I learnt my lesson. You also don't want to have to lean over a bookshelf to get a fire extinguisher that could then fall behind a bookshelf. It would be a quick fix to have the low shelf under the fire extinguisher. Hanging the tapestry against tte wall will make the space seem larger too. I would actually solve the ugliness factor by leaning into having a fire extinguisher in the book corner in the first place. You could, for example, explain that you have a fire extinguisher in the library because paper is flammable. That could segue nicely into paper being made from wood, etc. Kids love firefighters, and you live in California, so wildfires and fire safety will come up in conversation. I teach UK primary, so I'm not familiar with the US curriculum, but that would tie in nicely with our Year 2 science topic about materials. My only other comment is about the display in the centre of the room. I would consider maybe putting a strip of waterproof wallpaper or laminated card along the bottom edge of the display by the sink. One of my colleagues once had a display over a sink completely ruined by water. Good luck this year. Your classroom is stunning and so love how you integrate decor, floor plan and function. Your room is looking good. I have a funny feeling your tapestry can not be covering a fire extinguisher. I would think when the fire department comes to inspect they will define that as a hazard. The fire department near my school came and wrote pages and pages of things that needed to be taken down such as hanging wires where we had hanging children’s work, nothing could hang from the ceiling, curtains covering closets had to be taken down because they werent treated for fire.
