Beard balm is my favorite beard grooming product because it goes on quick, is not messy, and is low maintenance. Beard balm is the perfect leave-in beard conditioner, without being oily.
How to Use Beard Balm:
1) With your thumbnail, scoop out a handsome-sized dollop of beard balm, and drop it into the palm of your hand.
2) Use your fingers to smear the balm until it melts into the consistency of butter.
3) Rub your hands together, and smear it onto the surface of your beard. Don't rub it in too deep--just glaze the surface of your beard, paying special attention to the sides and the places that tend to have strays.
4) You now have a well conditioned beard!

I am at 9 months and 6+ inch hairs. I prefer a beard balm as the buttery consistency stays in and hold better than oil. I have been using honest amish heavy duty beard balm and it does great. I haven't tried any other balm so I can't compare it as to what is better. Balms and oils are not that expensive but can be if you buy several different brands. One thing you hit on the I find important is not to apply directly to the skin. I find that true with both balms and oils as well. If you apply to the beard, the balms and oils will work their way to the skin so there in really no need to apply to the skin. Having too much stuff on the skin will clog the pores and cause irritation. I do find it to be more effective applying balms and oils to a damp beard as opposed to a dry beard. The balms and oils seem to adhere to the hairs better if damp which help holds the beard in shape until the beard has finished drying. I wash my beard at every other day and sometimes once a day with black pine tar soap from www.mosoap.com so that I can keep excess oil buildup from clogging my pores. It seems like a battle between keeping the beard conditioned and the skin cleaned. My skin gets irritated easy.

I know a guy with an epic beard, who could use this. He does use beard oil, but this might be even more useful for his crazy ginger beard.

Quick question, just got some balm, never used it, after a shower can use some oil then balm or is that too much?

+Shane Metcalfe It's a bit too much. Choose oil or balm--not both. ONly use both if you use each in small amounts.

weird my beard balm is really soft. are there different kinds of beard balm?

+Bob Vergara Some are softer than others. I find semi-rigid beard balm is the best for beards.

Thanks Classyman. I have been growing my beard for 3 months not trimmed any off it. The Moustache part is growing long and goes in to my mouth a lot. I can not bring my self to trim it in case I miss it being there. What should I do O mighty Classyman. By the way I`m not joking. Also growing a beard is really a hard thing to do to start of with or is it just me.

I have been growing a beard for about 3 months now but one side isn't as thick as the other should I just start over? I really like having a beard and I don't want shave.

Jack Lindvall No don't start over. This is probably due to genetics. There are a few things you can do: 1) Use a beard growth shampoo to encourage the dormant follicles on your thin side to start growing. Here is my article on beard shampoo: www.growabeardnow.com/beard-growth-shampoo/ 2) Thin the full side to more evenly match the thin side. It is best not to do this by yourself. See a certified barber. 3) Wait it out. One side of your face may have strands that just grow more slowly than the other side. If this is the case, then all you can do is wait and hope that side gets thicker as the slow-growers catch up. Starting over will just make things worse! Good luck matey!
