There are some companions that have great personalities. Nick and Deacon are personally my favorite up to this point because of how much character they have individually. If you haven't taken Deacon out for a spin, he's fun to have around. He's incredibly sarcastic and lighthearted about everything; probably my favorite voice-line of his to date is, "bullets are expensive... can we just pay you to play dead?". The disguising is pretty cool too, how he'll change his get-up depending on what part of the commonwealth you are in. He's also pretty well written; overall, the synth companions are pretty cool with things, both the noir robotic detective and the gen 3 greaser, and nice to have around. Piper and Caitlyn are fun to have around and are written well; Macready is okay from what I've experienced. Never really got along with Strong simply because, out of everyone, he's a total moralist with the whole, "no picking locked things, even if you're in the middle of an abandoned building" thing.

While on the subject on Nick and DiMA and their histories: I think I already posted this somewhere but I have a personal theory that DiMA is indirectly responsible for Shaun being kidnapped. My basis for this theory, is how drastically different Gen 3 synths are compared to Gen 1 and Gen 2s - and for that matter Nick, and DiMA. When we look at Gen 1 and 2 synths, they are undeniably traditional robots. They are a more advanced "humanoid" shaped robots compared to the prewar kinds like Assaultrons or Protectrons. The difference between Gen 1s and 2s is simply the plastic skin, a seemingly simple upgrade. Almost like a "Next years model" kind of update. Gen 3s on the otherhand are a much bigger leap. They are made with organic elements, vs the metal and plastic parts of older synths. No longer are they using simple mechanics to emulate what the human body can do, they now have muscles, and bones exactly like a human does. The older models are "Dumb as rocks" as Nick puts it, while the Gen 3s are as intelligent as a human. Dr. Amari uses your brain like a CPU to help decrypt a chip, with that kind of knowledge it seems possible that a Gen 3's Synth brain may be organic and based off a human as well - Specially if she is able to reprogram a Synth's brain to make them believe they are human. - The Synth component you always find, may be the only traditional mechanical part in a synth, and its used to "reset" the brain. - I'll also quickly note: If I recall a Terminal stated that the term 'Synth' is rather recent and Gen 2s were often called androids. If you ask me, it would be more accurate to consider Gen 1s and 2s robots or androids since they are closer to those concepts then a "synthetic human". When we first wander around the Institute we can overhear a scientist complaining about how Gen 1 and 2s are walking into walls, implying that their AI is not really that advanced, and is long due for an upgrade. This makes the creation of Nick and DiMA make a lot of sense. A finalized version of them would be a CPU + AI update on Gen 2 synths - again fitting the "Next Years model" sorta generational upgrade. However how would one program such a being? We know in our world how difficult it is to create AI, so how can we make this easier? "Can you make an already intelligent independent being?" (Nick), or "Does it have to learn from experience?/Can it learn from experience?"(DiMA). However... It does seem odd. Half a century passes between DiMA and Nick's escape, and the Institute kidnapping Shaun, yet no update has happened to Gen 2 synths. No attempt to make another prototype. So after 100 years they are still walking into walls, or making simple mistakes. So how does this make DiMA indirectly responsible for Shaun's kidnapping? Well Its almost like once they escaped the Institute had a shift in how they wanted to design a synth. I have to wonder: If DiMA and Nick never escaped, would a different kind of Gen 3 synth have come out that would have been an AI update? Then what about a Gen 4? It likely be a fix of a problem from this theoretical Gen 3, just like the previous generations. It makes sense why the Institute had a major shift. All their years of hard work making these two prototypes just up and vanished. I think it's likely DiMA would also have deleted any records they had about their research on making Nick. It pained him to see what they were doing with Nick, and he didn't want another Synth going through that. When all your research is destroyed, you have to start anew, and so new radical ideas like making organic robots can rise in popularity and so starts the research into a new field. But in order to make these organic robots you need "pure" DNA. - And thats where Shaun comes in.
@GedTech7 жыл бұрын
Sypran : don't forget the diamond city massacre. The synth that went on a rampage was not a gen 3, he was gen 2 with human like skin. The resident of the city found this out very easily by cutting him open. Gen 3 have only the implants in their brains used to program them, gen 3 had all of their knowledge downloaded, which is the only hardware and to get to it you would have to cut the skull open. The gen 2.5 mass murder was the next step up from dima and nick, who were gen 2.4 synths.That synth was a true android and had a major malfunction just like nick and dima. Thank god the institute is not a greedy corporation or that mass murdering android would have been mass produce. That level of research and development would have bankrupt a corporation if they did not sale it.
@-DeScruff7 жыл бұрын
CryoTechie Geddes Oh yeah forgot abou that synth. I always did wonder when exactly that happened, and why it was the only one. - I don't even think the Institute terminals mention it, even as a historical record of "Infiltration Synth model 1, trail no. 1" since its (as far as we are aware) one of the earliest attempts to see if synths can pass off as human. I dunno if I'd call it a 2.5 then Nick and DiMA 2.4... Its more like they all were prototypes for different concepts. Nick and DiMA being more intelligent, and that one testing "human like" skin. - With combat subroutines "turned off" - however that part malfunctioned. Makes me wonder if Nick had escaped at the time. Cause if it was after, I wonder if they would have sent a Nick-Like synth that did think it was human to see how well it could fit in.

They were in fact, a largely successful experiment with one single flaw: Not Enough Memory. The Institute must've decided "yes we can do this!" and it was at that time that I believe they must've began researching Robobrain technology and implimenting it into other experiments, eventually arriving at the conclosion that they now had a need for actual human DNA. Enter Shawn. Edit: Stopped watching halfway because I did this whole DLC but not with nick. Im halfway though with nick and I will have to come back to this video to see what you think.

@mrkiky4 жыл бұрын
Ultimately DiMA has a "needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" and "ends justify the means" type of morality. I made the same choice which was made easier since Tektus was a warmongering cult leader and the Children are a bunch of religious loons, but at least some of them are only misguided. But I fear what DiMA's morality will get him to do in the name of his cause in the future.

I think Valentine is my favourite companion in FO4. He's tied up in a bunch of questlines, his skill tree is fairly decent with most points into int and per. And his character is awesome. The noir detective... with robots. Also he's one of the most human followers in the game, ironically. Edit: Ironic, given that I tend to side with the Brotherhood more often than not.

everytime I enter the dialog camera and get a good look at the models and animations I always think to myself "hmmm what would it be if Bethesda was in charge of the animations/models regarding Mass Effect:Andromeda I mean nick has SO MANY expressions with every single line of dialog I srsly don't even read the subtitles that I have turned on I just look at him :D

Oxhorn, thank you so much for looking into this particular story. I always knew there was so much more to Nick's tale, and DiMA just seems so... sad. My heart goes out to them both.

You know i saw this video and thought "Well that story is pretty common knowledge, what more can i really learn?" but I decided to watch it anyway because i just love your videos, and im glad i did. i had never heard a lot of their brotherly banter, or at least never paid much attention. the one about repairs made me giggle. Another great video Ox, i cant wait to see more.

If Shaun's DNA was used to make these synths, does that make Nick the survivors grandson?

I honestly think this poses a bigger question than the prospect of synths and humans living together. It touches on if a person is the sum of their experiences or not. Nick is just as much the original human Nick as can be. His exact copy minus the experiences is a completely different person. Imagine 2 black canvases, one has been computer copied to be exactly the same as the Mona Lisa, and the other is left to be painted to whoever comes to pick it up.

I've just subscribed - I love how you go so in depth into characters and analyse everything, and you've got such a pleasant and calming demeanour that your videos are just a joy to watch. I find DiMA really interesting, and I'm so glad they didn't go for the standard "evil twin" trope - While I think what DiMA did is morally awful, his intentions were genuinely good - like you mentioned in the far harbour endings video, its the only way to really ensure peace among the factions on the island, and I enjoyed the genuine moral greyness of it - No matter what option i pick, I never feel like i've done the completely right thing. There's always a bit of dirtiness. I always have Nick decide what he wants to do - I've never felt it was right to influence him during a period of vulnerability. Is there enough info to do a video on the Pre-War Nick Valentine? You can find the holotape where nick is ordered to seek treatment for PTSD after Jenny's death, but I also found a terminal there that reveals that Nick's bosses knew she was in danger, and deliberately didn't tell her or Nick in order to not compromise the investigation. The whole situation is so sad because he was called in from Chicago specifically to aid in the winter case - and during those months he lost his fiance, his sanity by the sound of it, was betrayed by the law and then got nuked.

I thought I messed up when I didn't take Nick with me to Far Harbor. When I finally realized I needed him and went back, I thought I'd never get the brother dialogue because Dima just didn't address the issue and was ok with that. Nick didn't need the pain. However, when I finished with Tektusynth .... Dima brought it up. And it's too late to get Dina to offer himself to Acadia bc the only way to get Tektus made me promuse to keep the secret. Anyway, I only posting bc the dialogue -is- there, but I had to finish the main quest to activate it. My Nick didn't lose his brother, the CoA are ok with Tektusynth, and I suppose Far Harbor is fine. Next: I have to take Old Longfellow to the Commonwealth and run some Preston errands to get his affinity. Hopefully. Thanks Ox. I appreciate your channel and the things you do.

I love your videos and how you express theories, thoughts and emotions that the characters go through from multiple angles. Your video are extremely well done and full of lore, passion for the games and interesting real life topics as well. please keep up all the work your doing. I'm usually a fps kinda girl but you made me pick up the fallout4 series again. along with destiny 2, anthem and a few others you made me want to get far harbor just so I could see Nick have someone he can relate to deeper about personal synth things and feelings. I love the story and their interesting positions in their interactive conversations.

Think it's interesting to note that what has happened to Nick possibly contributes to Dimas dislike of memory wipes (And possibly Dimas' erased memory subconsciously causing it as well)

Fun fact is studies show that people tend to congregate around and live near those like them. Asians prefer to live and interact with other asians, whites prefer to live and interact with other whites, etc. We naturally separate ourselves into groups, like oil and water. Now of course, there's nothing wrong with intermixing. Plenty of people do it all the time. It's just one of those little things that make us all different.
