Claude MONET is one of the founding fathers of the impressionist movement with the painter Auguste Renoir. He became very interested in rendering light on water after discovering Turner's paintings. Based in Giverny, he stayed there for more than forty years and painted landscapes seeking to capture a fleeting moment of nature, and not to represent it as a state of mind. He created and painted his famous "lily pond" by capturing the present moment, that is to say a fleeting reality that will have already changed an hour later. Light plays an essential role in suggesting an impression or emotion captured by the human eye.

Talking about Impressionism, focusing on Monet and clearly omitting that the first person who ever painted so loosely and with a simple impression of what he was seeing was Turner. It’s indeed right after Monet flees to London to escape the war that Monet sees Turner paintings and starts painting in a very loose and quick fashion. JMW Turner is the father of Impressionism, whether people want to admit it or not, but Turner embraced the time and age he was living in, particularly with the development of the train and steam boats allowing people to travel distances quicker than ever before, and it’s in this fashion Turner went on trips and taken by time that he began to sketch things quickly, adding colors to these sketches that his hand became the first in history to paint an impressionist painting. His watercolours, especially of Venice clearly bare all the characteristics of the Impressionism movement, consequently adopted a century later by the Parisians. That’s the beginning of impressionism. Impressionism doesn’t come from Monet nor any French painter I’m afraid, and I’m saying this I’m French myself. Just like photography was clearly invented by Niepce, and perhaps more qualitatively developed by Daguerre, and not Talbot. There seems a little war of who was the first to do what has been going inbetween the French and the British for centuries regarding the development of technologies, but the truth needs to be told as it is without bias. Monet, and then Van Gogh, would never have dared to paint that way if it wasn’t for Turner. I prefer Monets mastery of Impressionism compared to Turners very dark and gloomy types of paintings but I also very much love Turner in the same time, it’s just that Monet infused his paintings with a lot of passion, a lot of gentleness, a lot of tenderness and love, with very bright colours which he clearly copied from Turners watercolours, especially with Soleil Levant more than any other painting of Monet. Monet then focused a bit more on the vegetation and nature itself, whereas Turner was more interested in drama and somewhat presenting the modern world, the industrial world. Times were very different of course. Monets era was more prosperous, more comfortable, than it was for Turner, but I mean, when you know the guy Turner took boats, trains and chariots to travel across Europe through France and Italy, even going to the Pyrenees, the guy was clearly mad, I mean, you can only have admiration for his courage to it all on his own. Mad respect for Turner, never ending love for Monet water lilies
