My best friend died from an overdose when I was in Afghanistan. We always told each other that we would speak at our funeral. I wasn't able to. I was stuck at a crummy combat Outpost. We had problems and hadn't spoken in a while. I was ready to close the curtain and reconnect. While I was making my way back to FOB Shank, we stopped at an international base. I called his mom and got his new number. I figured I would wait until I got back to base to call him. I hadn't had a shower in 5 weeks so I waited. He died a few hours after and I didn't find out until I got to Shank. Now I have a rule; tell people how much they mean to you because life is uncertain at best. Cherish it and those that are on the same crazy journey. Thanks for being amazing. You are awesome.

Maybe that's why I love Babylon 5 so much. I identify with many of the actors and their battles with addiction. I just found out today about Michael O'hare's battles with schizophrenia. It's awesome that Straczynski kept his secret all those years. I always thought something was strange with the way he left the show. Why spend an entire first season developing a strong captain just to bring in a new guy. Now I get it and it was classy to try to get him the help he desperately needed. Such a tragic story.

I was a borderline alcoholic and struggled horribly with addiction as a young bisexual man, trying to come to terms with my identity in a deeply traditionalist Conservative home. Claudia, I don't know if you'll ever see this, but seeing you as Cmdr. Ivanova on "B5" when I was a young man was a spot of hope. Seeing a character that was like me in so many ways, that shared so many of my struggles, but still managed to triumph in the face of adversity and heartbreak, gave me the confidence to come out to my family, to break up with a lousy boyfriend, and later, to confront my addiction. It was rough for a while, but I did it, and I've been clean for nearly a decade. But I still remember being a wide-eyed kid, barely a teenager, watching the arc between Susan and Talia, and realizing that maybe I wasn't as alone as I thought. Thanks for giving a much younger, lonelier me the hope that things could get better, and that I could find a place in this crazy world.

I miss all of you guys from Babylon 5. That show holds a very special place in my heart. I was heartbroken to find out about Michael O'Hare and his issues with mental health, which goes along with addiction (both of which I've suffered through and am still on treatment for mental health issues). Then Andreas Katsulas and his addiction to nicotine and cigarettes; another scourge that should be wiped from the planet. The list of brilliant actors that have passed from the show are too numerous and to painful to recall because from time to time, I like to go to "the third age of mankind" and live in that microcosm of Babylon 5. Claudia, you as lovely as you did when you played the "daughter of Andrei and Sophie Ivanov". I wish you continued success in spreading the word about the battle with addiction, which invariably plays into mental health issues as it is a mental health issue, and keeping the loving memories of those lost to us from addiction, and the stigma society places on it, and mental health issues. You were my favorite Ivanov.

I saw her talk about the Sinclair method and Naltrexone which I tried but didn't work for my alcohol problems. But luckily, my key worker suggested a different medication called Baclofen. It's actually intended to be used as an anti-spastic medication but has been shown to be highly effective in fighting alcohol dependence and PAWS (Protracted Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms). I've been on 3 x 20mg daily for over 6 months now and the best I can describe it is, it gives you a bit of an advantage in your thought process. You know when you're having a low day and you consider lapsing and that little voice is saying, "Just go down the shop and get a bottle. You can handle it". Well, it's like another little voice kicks in and gives you pause for thought. "Hold on. you've been down that road and you know exactly where it leads. Do you really want to go through all that again?" If you're alcohol dependent, Google "Baclofen". My opinion.

Some of the problem is these people put their trust in a professional who suddenly becomes an enabler . We saw it with Michael Jackson , who's doctor got what he deserved , and now Prince , who had the same relationship with his doctor . I don't know if the same situation existed with Mr. Conaway . In Jim Belushi's case , he had people around him who got him anything he wanted . He also had friends who wanted to help but didn't know what to do , and by the time they figured it out , it was too late . I was on morphine for a while back in the 80's and I asked the doctor to make it as brief as possible because I was really starting to like it . Most people don't recognize that until it's too late . My sympathies for the loss of your friend . Thank you for having the courage to post this and God Bless .

Olivia Newton-John's death...well, that was really sad, also - Newton-John sounded like a person who wanted to help others, a lot - but it sure doesn't sound like Newton-John's demise could've been prevented. Different story with Conaway. Loved Grease. I hope both of them are resting peacefully, without pain.

They know their lives are spinning out of control and they feel like there’s nothing they can do to stop it. And it’s next to impossible to help them if they don’t want your help. OK, I'm an alcoholic in recovery and a former stand-up comic. I have some experience with addiction and the performing arts [if not fame, necessarily]. And I'll be honest with you, I have some issues with this vid. I appreciate Claudia's discussion of her relationship with Jeff Conaway [one of a slew of celebrity crash and burns in the 80's and 90's]. But I find the last half of the video, where she's schilling this Sinclair method to be misleading and disingenuous. If you want to pitch a product, come out and say so. Don't use the false lead in. It undermines whatever good you think you're doing. Now, let me be clear here... I have no opinion about this 'Sinclair method', whatever that is. I know nothing about it and have never read the book[s]. That being said, I'm all for anything that helps an addict confront their addiction and helps them stay sober. I'm not much of a 12-step guy [AA, NA, etc.] but I recognize that a whole lot of people have gotten a lot of value out of the program. Addiction is an individual journey so whatever works for you is the right answer.
