Diahann Carroll: Born July 17, 1935 - Died October 4, 2019 at the age of 84 (Cancer). She was an American actress, singer and model. She rose to stardom in performances in some of the earliest major studio films to feature black casts, including Carmen Jones in 1954 and Porgy and Bess in 1959. In 1962, Carroll won a Tony Award for best actress, a first for a black woman, for her role in the Broadway musical No Strings. Her 1968 debut in Julia, the first series on American television to star a black woman in a nonstereotypical role, was a milestone both in her career and the medium. In the 1980s she played the role of a mixed-race diva in the primetime soap opera Dynasty. Carroll was the recipient of numerous stage and screen nominations and awards, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress In A Television Series in 1968. She received an Academy Award for Best Actress nomination for the 1974 film Claudine.

This film's so sad for a reason most people don't know. The woman who was to be the original lead, the talented Ms Diana Sands (A Raisin in The Sun) was terminally ill. She was the one who suggested her dear friend (Ms Diahan Carroll) to take over for her. Ms Sands' last role was in Willie Dynamite (she was 'Cora', the lady who tries to help the young woman working for Willie). Ms Carroll's terrific in this, and if you're familiar with Ms Sands' work, one just wonders...🌷

It was a different era. Nobody had anything, so people made it work. There was more love then, but more problems too. Around my way, white people had virtually all the jobs, even the bullshit ones like working in the movie theaters, the shoe stores, and the diners...even the fast food. So we hustled a lot and did the best we could.

@@taankh That is a lie. This was not the 1800's. There were black people who had good jobs. All blacks were not poor then, and all blacks are not poor now. They were simply promoiting a stereotype.

I sorta agree with your comment BUT from a more moral stance, it's the mans job to make it so he can provide for his woman and children. We should had 3 more civil wars with the shit the US Gov did to black people. Men who don't want to abandon their women and children because the system wants to psychologically wants to fuck the black community should still stick it through with their family. A lot of these men went to pimphood and then became monsters. A lot of these women settled for the government and became monsters. This is the intent of the Gov obviously but if Black People had a united front back then, we could countered a lot of shit. This is why ideology's are powerful and people stick to them, we at LEAST would be united to push back on this beast.

I think it was interesting because she was in love. I believe maternal instinct caused her to look after her own as well. He had a decent job for a single guy, but taking on that many while she was on welfare was a “slippery slope”. The movie impacted the choices I made growing up. I realized that everyone has a hustle, so be careful of a situation you might be tied to for a while

Turns 50! I remember watching this back in college studying black manhood I’d put this as a half and half review; it depends on how you want to look at it from a historical point of view in terms of how the 1970's saw African Americans in cinema among 'Shaft', 'Black Dynamite', and many others 'Claudine' had the right intentions it wasn't well-received by the public when it came out but it did try the movie itself I didn't find that bad to watch but I did pay attention to certain things the film mainly deals with feminism and masculinity with both Diahann Carroll and James Earl Jones in NYC it's a fascinating role reversal to have Claudine as the mother take up more of the responsibility since she has 6 kids and hoping for a husband to come along the way to make it easier she appears to be more of the 'man' of the house taking care of her family, working to make ends meet and being concerned Jones as Roop, the garbage man who takes a liking to her is dealing with a lot; he's much less of a man being insecure, "castrated" in a manner of speaking by having to deal with the fact of being a father, not making any money, having his employment terminated it raises a lot of questions of who's more manly the black woman or black man, what makes a man truly a man, is one more masculine than the other, is stuff like money enough to consider manhood? the movie goes back and forth between the racial stereotypes trying to clearly define it all the kids even get a lot of development in the midst of the Black Power Movement going on one feels invisible, one has shed his manhood and another has accepted the fact that black men have contributed a lot to society the social commentary is there focusing on issues such as race, welfare, equal rights, masculinity, femininity which I admired the themes like family, marriage and the community is also addressed but the focus is more on the two leads, their romance and deciding who's fit to say what they're identity is so you see it is a mixed bag because it's not a realistic portrayal of blacks in the time period but at the same time isn't Blaxploitation it's up to you to choose whether or not the film succeeds what it's doing

No as reported in the government notes the assigned country does not get to see trust with birthmates who are not physcially together yet for trust allowance and life. I commended HRA for use of it as a victim because once the deposit hits it’s impossible to steal from in a hostile environment so it’s perfect. You have to make sure your husband and trust know to avoid infiltration in HRA for your money to stop deposits but once they hit it’s perfect for a victim. I’d recommend to other victims in hostile environments for their trusts. Good decision by my husband. Monique
