The most unbelievable incredible astounding pianist in the history of music. Actually the word pianist is totally inadequate to describe Master Arrau. Musical genius may just begin to be adequate. It's how Beethoven was meant to be played. His tempo is perfection. So blessed we can immerse ourselves in this divine music via KZbin! 💖💖

I believe the first time I burst into tears when listening to music was when I was about eight, and my father played me a scratchy recording of Brahms' 4th Symphony. Now I'm 66, and I just watched this, and it happened for the second time.

Arrau has the best line and understanding of phrasing of any pianist ever. His interpretations reign supreme above almost all else in my mind. His passion is genuine, his approach to music professional, and his relaxed technique and control make for a sublime yet compelling performance every single time. I cannot overstate how much I respect and admire the great Claudio Arrau León, not just as a pianist, but as a musician. ❤

Amen. He shapes each and every phrase masterfully. And that ain't easy given the strong contrasts among all the thematic elements in this piece. Arrau ties them together seamlessly, without apparent effort, as he shapes the phrase.

Venía a veces.

Beethoven > Carl Czerny > Franz List > Martin Krause > Claudio Arrau. Czerny was a Beethoven champion and devoted his life teaching pianists, Beethoven. Czerny took 11 year-old Franz Liszt to meet Beethoven who, allergic to child prodigies, reluctantly agreed to the meeting. Upon passing Beethoven demanding tests (a Bach's fugue and transposition of same to another key on the fly), Liszt played Beethoven's 1st piano concerto (first movement). Beethoven's frown turned to a benevolent smile and seized both Liszt's hands, kissed him on the forehead and said gently ``Off with you! You are a happy fellow, for you will give happiness and joy to many other people. There is nothing better or greater than that'' Having learned from Czerny, Liszt imparted to his pupils the Beethoven way to the sonatas and Krause was not only young Arrau's piano teacher, but also as importantly, taught him music and culture.

I don't really think the line of pupils always work, if it had, every great virtuoso of early to mid 20th century would have been comfortable with their way of playing Beethoven; contrary to the fact that some like Cziffra avoided performing the music of Beethoven.

To all the pianists who are able to play in concerts, they all heard the horror stories of how to muck up this sonata. So in fear, the inferior ones would try to rush through the movements hoping the audience would not notice. This is one of the hardest sonata to perform, even Arrau has to take some short cuts.

Arrau’s dynamic range is extraordinary. This performance is absolutely the essence of Beethoven, the result of the artist’s life-long absorption in the music. Arrau was a master of just about every kind of pedaling and touch imaginable. He and the instrument are one. I thought of someone describing the “drops of effervescence” that fell from Emanuel Bach’s face as he played. Thank you for posting this.

I can feel the sadness in the music the way Arrau plays it. Perhaps it is the way Beethoven was expressing his loving- tender friendship with his friend and patron Waldstein. So far I don’t grasp that feeling when I hear other pianists interpret it

Wonderful performance by the aging maestro! It has been said that Arrau is typically at his best in live concerts, and that he sometime "overthinks" pieces when he's in the recording studio, leading to odd hesitancies and mannered delivery. Perhaps we have evidence of that here, for this a Waldstein brimming with passion and deeply expressive sensitivity. A true legacy performance, musically profound in every way.

Bharat Raghavan There are a few nuances in Pollini's performance (e.g. 1:46 and 8:06) that don't come across the same when played slower. Arrau plays it fast when it needs to be played fast, particularly the 3rd movement, but the more expressive interpretation is what makes it an other-worldly experience. Cheers!

Saw him play les Adieux, Appasionata, Liszt B minor and Dante Sonata in one concert. When he walked onto the stage, there was a rustle of concern in the audience - he looked tired and infirm. Within 30 seconds, there was rapt silence - he held us spellbound for 2 hours. Unique experience.

Superb. Not too fast in first movement, he avoids the trap to overplay, keeping an introvert mood. Arau is the pianist of the bass notes.

Exquisitely joyful! So rich in symmetry, resonance vibrancy, precision of intonation. C. Arrau channels a majestic work of poetic lightness and simply silky melody. He ignites a terrific melodic sound of harmony & beauty "Waldstein" is so profound in its simplicity, it is simply fantastic!

The 3rd movement portraits a beautiful sunrise in the countryside, warm, happy, joyful feelings as I wake up to see the sun rising over the hills. I open the door to the smell of the spray field... flowers, grass, fruits waiting to be cut and eaten for breakfast. I stop and I sigh to let the complete ecstatic feeling inside my lungs and my whole body. What a great day to be alive!

The Olympian power and Dionysiac ecstasy of the section from 22:36 to the end never fail to make me weep. One wonders if the aristocratic audiences at the sonata's premier performance had any comprehension of the glories they were hearing.

VIVA a ARTE!! VIVA Claudio Arrau!!!!!!!

Einfach wunderbar!

73 years old! Pretty darned good, if you ask me. Arrau's playing was always deliberate, very thoughtful and well planned. His tone always reminds me of violas, cellos and double basses. There's very little "violin" in his rich-but-rather-dense sound.
