What is the price of true happiness? One year ago, Hyls Hiddema (37) from Weidum, The Netherlands, entered the Buddhist Ariya Centre in Thailand after a long spiritual quest. The objective: to live in a permanent state of happiness, or achieving Nirvana. For that he, like the Buddha himself, left his Thai wife Waw and seven-year-old son Aran.
Hyls studies under his enlightened teacher Luang Por Pichai the purest form of Buddhism. And he is convinced that he has found the right teacher in Luang Por Pichai. "Without teacher you are going nowhere. Too difficult and too theoretical. You'll never see your own blind spots." The goal is to achieve Nirvana, the ultimate homecoming, in this life. "If you know all the questions and you can answer them, if you get a clear understanding of how and why, you can become enlightened."
Friend and filmmaker Halbe Piter Claus visited Hyls and received unique access to the Ariya Centre. This movie brings moving pictures of this unknown community to the outside world for the first time in twenty years. What are the benefits and what are the consequences of Hyls' fundamental choice? And where will the little Aran stay when Waw also enters the temple?
