Martin Lewis Clashes With Lisa Nandy in Winter Fuel Payment Row

Four out of five pensioners who are expected to lose out on the winter fuel payment are on or below the poverty line, according to AgeUK. The charity is now urgently calling on the government to expand the automatic payment to those who receive benefits other than pension credit. Martin Lewis questions Labour Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy on whether the government will accept that thousands will never get the pension credit they're entitled to.

I find it frankly astonishing that Labour claimed that paying the Winter Fuel Allowance would crash the economy, yet handing the train drivers a pay increase *larger* than the annual basic state pension *won't* ?? If finances were genuinely so desperate, then foreign aid should be stopped, in order to look after the senior citizens of this nation, because they've both done their bit and paid into the system. The Chinese female theatre group who are receiving a foreign aid payment, haven't paid a penny into the UK's coffers. Any government has a moral duty to look after it's own citizens, sod Chinese theatre groups, or spending £60k of taxpayer's money on private photographers just to make a certain person "look" better. Let her be judged on her actions in government, not her appearance..

In my opinion the WFP is being withdrawn due to the above inflation increase the government will have to give pensioners next April due to pledging their committment to the triple lock and they are looking at measures to recoup some of the increse. Dont forget they are also dragging more people including pensioners into paying income tax due to the freeze on tax allowances, something I might add they opposed in 2021 when in opposition but are somehow now in favour of it

Why does no one mention the elephant in the room - housing costs. The state pension is barely sufficient to sustain any sort of quality of life, even if you own your own home. If you are a renter the picture is bleak and the state pesion is wholly inadequate.

Those who are entitled to pension credit - which DWP are fully aware of in the community, shouldn’t be forced to endure over 275 questions on a form to obtain it. Those entitled to it - should simply be given it automatically, and not expected to fill in a very deliberate complicated form when they maybe already suffering medically - which prevents them from understanding or distressingly frail from knowing how to do it.

Every time a Labour Minister defends this appalling decision they lose my respect. The decision was wrong - it could have been a win if they had removed it from being universal, but to cut it to only the very poorest is brutal - and to not consider modifying the decision is outrageous. More tragic than just pensioners Martin. Every school gate sees many grandparents collecting grandchildren to take them to a cold home, and what if the school holidays, all day on cold houses.
