I love this we used to sing this in school when I was in like 3rd grade and while the teacher would play the piano I had to play fiddle with her on it. This brings back memories.

I'm really late here but to answer your question the original version is believed to have been for the 1890's or something but the earliest recording I've found was from the 1920's

My pleasure, Vincent. And the downstroke style of playing began in Africa, and was then taught to whites in America. So, with clawhammer banjo, you have rhythms and a playing technique that is African origin, applied to music that is often European in origin, resulting in an entirely unique art form - in other words, it embodies the very best of what American culture can be. :)
