The expression on Steve Martin's face when he was playing was very interesting. You could tell he was really enjoying playing that, and like his mind was somewhere wonderful while he was playing it.

Man, every time I see Steve Martin playing the banjo, my respect for him just keeps going up. I liked him before for his comedy, but MAN, as a musician, I have new levels of respect for him - and envy!!!

I know from the past that yours is the majority view about the band adding to the effect but for me it’s always the killer. The tension of the troubadour solo is for me the best. When the others join in, the spell is broken and it’s instantly ordinary and my close attention is gone. That man sure can play clawhammer though.

Blue Grass and Steve Martin are both greatly under rated! I'm a Chicano, who grew up with Beatles, Hendrix, Santana, Mexican music, Motown and I love Bluegrass.

I close my eyes and see my dad playing clawhammer banjo with 2 brothers on fiddle and guitar and didn't stop til homecoming. They started as kids...Thanks Steve Martin for this style of music!

@@blainechappell5383 I've been really wanting to learn those riffs too since I heard him play his tiny desk concert. I didn't realize it was an actual song. I thought it was just clawhammer improv before So Familiar. Let me know if you find tabs for it, I'd appreciate it!

well he said, 'Look it up,' : Clawhammer , sometimes called frailing, is a distinctive banjo playing style and a common component of American old-time music. The principal difference between clawhammer style and other styles is the picking direction.

...watched one of his interviews and introduction to one of his songs played in claw hammer style... ‘this song captures the combination of sadness and melancholy... much like I wish I had a photo of my agent when I told him I wanted to go on a banjo tour...’ Well... I’m glad he did it anyway... what an amazing musician... writer... play write... comedian... and genuine person. All the (continued) VERY BEST!

Nostalgia, longing, love, loss. I have a painting of a dirt road by meadow. A tree arches over the path creating a sorta of frame of the path ahead. I can feel the presence and wonder as if I were in the picture. Reminds me of how the expressions you create bring an image of Un describable images. Who knew a banjo and an old song?

I got to see Steve Martin and Martin Short with The Steep Mountain Rangers. They played this medley and one more number. It was my favorite part of the show. I would've loved listening to Steve Martin and the band play for a couple more hours. I love Martin Short too, but he and Steve sure did a lot of low-brow comedy. The music was the best part.

actually, Steve Martin was on Johnny Carson in 1975 playing the banjo!!!! 6 years BEFORE the Jerk. just trivia. oh and guess he was playing in 71 also.
