This is quite interesting as are many other’on the edge video tutorials that are only seen by me on You Tube.Which parts of the kit have the serial numbers on them?

Just a note, I would begin soldering from the middle. Heat the middle of the container, and the heat will spread, then you can draw your hand back out instead of pushing into heated material. Finish to one end, then start from the middle again, and pull out to the other end. Your heat should be able to be nearly continuous, and should allow the solder to flow a lot easier instead of getting lots of clumps.

hpjunky70 - Negative, the solder does not have lead in it. It's lead free plumbing solder. BTW: Like your videos. Crazy stuff! Never knew there was so much sand in Michigan.

It's 16 oz. copper. 24 gauge? Very sturdy. I've had several folks who have bought the kits comment on how it was a lot thicker than they though it was going to be.

Donnieboy - Seriously, right!? The entire time we were shooting I was like "WTF! I can solder much better than this!" I think it was the pressure of being filmed plus the fact that I was having to do things with opposite hands to get the right camera angles...

another good way of pressing your copper down around your rivet is to use a small socket (socket wrench socket) put it over the rivet and hit it.saves you alottta time

Note: Use Silver Solder & a Mapp gas, or straight up Acetylene (not oxy-acetyline) torch for soldering the joint on the boiler! Silver soldered joints are stronger & more heat resistant than a non-lead electrical solder...

We use lead free plumbing solder-- the melting point is between 420-440F. The still will always have liquid in it-- so the still will never get above 212 at sea level. There is no need to worry about the lead free plumbing solder melting. Not sure where you are reading we are using electrical solder?-- but we are not. We don't recommend using Mapp gas on copper- if you don't have experience you can easily burn though it. Propane is what we recommend and works the best. This is the solder we use and recommend: www.clawhammersupply.com/collections/all-products/products/lead-free-solder

At what point did you cut the tabs and how was it done?

For riveting, a piece of railroad track makes a nice, heavy bench block for the job; a lot better than using a mini sledge as a backing block for your rivet joint.

if i dont want to buy a kit where can i buy the copper sheet at myself?great video!!
@ClawhammerSupply12 жыл бұрын
Nope, that's the only reason. It's actually easier to solder on the outside, but soldering on the inside produces a better looking final product.
@ClawhammerSupply12 жыл бұрын
No, not at all. We tested using extreme heat and have never had a problem. The liquid in the still carries enough heat away to prevent the solder from melting. ...as long as it isn't run empty (which would never happen), they'll be fine.

Im just curious this is very interesting n im type that I want the final product to be safe to drink u know why not fond a way to make um without soder no deems like take a big sheet n press it into the shape so u hav no seems no soder seems safer

Is there a reason you are soldering the inside not the outside other than aesthetics?

I would think you should avoid solder as much as possible & solder the outside for the most part a connection like duct work would be good & solder the out side of that

Not to brag but I am great at soldering unless somebody is watching me so don't feel bad. I also know how to braze. 35 years in the HVAC business will demand you be good at it.

yes but morons do not know that...you can still get led for car body work, and in a type of solder form but shit is a inch thick...lol

50/50 lead copper is still sold and often used on heating systems etc. It is sold in rolls just like the lead free stuff. Just make sure to check the label, and don't use an old roll from the tool shed with the label worn off.
