This was world-class even in the context of a singing show.

Well, he didn't lose by a long shot. It was VERY close. He lost by like 100,000 votes and when you think about how many people watch the show and the number of votes a single person might send, it's a very small margin between the 2. At the very least, Ruben and Clay were both worthy opponents and were both worthy of 1st place. Besides, though Clay didn't win, he still did good for himself and released albums. You don't necessarily have to win the competition to prove you have what it takes to be a superstar. Even Simon agrees with that. Chris Daughtry and Jennifer Hudson didn't win and they've turned out better than Fantasia and Taylor Hicks, the winners of the seasons they were on.
