Thank you!!! I love that I just learned this! I've been getting more excited and informed about cob building (at this point that's my top dream home) and that led me to wondering what colors cob can come in...and how to add cob or a cob look to standard homes...which led to me learning about earthen pigments...and now clay paint. The faux version would I think be mixing standard paint (companies like Benjamin Moore make no-VOC at least) with baking soda for texture though I doubt that'd ever completely give the look and feel of true clay paint, not to mention how fun is that you sourced and cooked and mixed it yourself and applied it with your hands like a potter!!! It is amazing what can be learned on KZbin!! There's also a very beautifully shot video on KZbin on making clay paint by The Nito Project.

Thanks for the great vid and also your walls look very lovely.I have made my own casein/curds and earth paint which has done very nicely on ferro cement and earth walls.I have been looking in to starch based paints and renders to try something different and in particular tapioca starch as it seems to make the best glue.Have you tried other flours to compare as to which one is best.Could you also please tell me if you have had any mold issues.I use a tiny bit of borax in my casein paint with great results,I live in the sub tropics in Australia so mold is an issue in our wet and mild summers.Also adding borax creates a cross link when making the glue which is meant to make it stronger.Also thinking of trying a bit of finely blended cow manure with the mix.Cheers

We tried wheat flour sticky rice flour milk powder egg white rubber from rubber tree . It is hard to tell the difference mostly we us tapioca starch . It's cheap easy and last quite long more than 10 years. If the house has good foundation good roof and paint when the wall very dry we have no problem with mold.

Hello, I would love to try this at my place. Do you know which primer to use on normal painted (Acrylic paint) walls?
@NouriaDiallo Жыл бұрын
You can use an acrylic undercoat with sand mixed into it to provide a physical support. Works for clay plaster too. Make sure you keep on mixing regularly so the sand doesn't sink in the bottom of your bucket... You can also use a wallpaper glue instead of paint, the methylcellulose one is safer for the environment than acrylic resin.

12 liters of water when it is boiling melt 1 kilo of starch in room temp water. It may need 2-3 liters to melt the starch then pour the starchy water into the boiling water stir very quick. Bear in mind that if you mess this up and the coating on your wall is dusty or flaky, silica sand was used in the recipe. Silica sand will wreck your lungs (silicosis). And, yes, handle the silica sand carefully so you do not breathe it when mixing your paint.

From my research, for exterior surfaces is best to add lime to the mixture which helps to make it weather proof. But then you can't apply it with your bare hands as it can be quite drying and for some the lime can cause burns to the skin.
