Thank goodness there is a huge demand for Alaskan Pollock roe in Japan and Korea. Annual harvests of Alaskan Pollack yield large quantities of roe. There is no market that I know of for this kind of roe in North America or Europe. Without the large demand for roe in East Asia, it might end up being processed as fish meal, a low-value by-product for chicken feed and fertilizer. One Alaskan floating fishery and cannery, The Alaska, recounted in its 2008 documentary that the sale of its roe in Japan equaled the ship's net profit on every Alaskan Pollock harvest season. This was a statistical reference, of course. But the meaning was clear. Roe fetches top dollar in the Far East. Without Pollock roe to add to the gross profit, the harvest fishing and cannery ship would not be able to turn a net profit. It might be anywhere between breaking even or making a miniscule profit, not worth it.

Mmm sounds a little far fetched. The roe is mostly harvested during A-season and it does bring in a nice amount of extra $, but the fillets, oil, surimi, and fish-meal you mentioned also bring in a crap ton of money and are harvested A and B season (maybe year round between different fisheries?) The pollock fisheries in Alaska would only be doing A-season if the rest of the fish didn't net them a very nice profit without the roe.

@@btkeller93 I actually got my information from a History Channel 2008 documentary about the American Alaska-stationed Pollack fishing and canning ship, The Alaska. The captain mentioned that after all the wages, costs, fuel, and overhead were paid for on each annual pollack harvesting expedition, the remaining net profit equaled what the pollack roe sold for in Japan. He wasn't specifically attributing net profit to roe sales. He was making a statistical comparison. Yet I took it to mean that if Pollock roe was unsaleable, then The Alaska would lose that amount of profit and actually become unprofitable. Operating, sailing, managing, and maintaining a large Pollock harvesting and canning ship is immensely expensive. The Alaska had to squeeze every penny of profit from every Pollock fish to make some kind of profit. This meant using the Pollock fish oil for bunker fuel and processing all the unusable Pollock parts into chicken food meal. I don't know how much all the Pollock roe sold for in Japan. I would like to know because The Alaska harvested a lot of roe from all the massive Pollock catches in the Bering Sea. The owners of The Alaska had to have made some kind of reasonable profit to motivate them in keeping The Alaska operating. Even a tiny profit would not be enough.
