In this tutorial we show you how to eliminate bad frequencies! This is very important to know if you want to have clean mixes. When you have a track with many stems with bad frequencies they will add up to a muddy sounding mix.
1. EQ - We explain how to scan through your tracks using an EQ with an Analyzer and find the problem areas. This also includes cutting out frequencies below 100
2. De-Esser - We open the Fab Filter Pro-DS to explain how to use a De-Esser to cut out bad frequencies.
3. Waves C1 Sidechain - We use this great old school plug in to show you how to isolate bad frequencies and draw them down. Using this plug in is great as opposed to straight EQ because we can control the bad frequencies much more.
4. Multiband compression - This is an amazing way to get rid of bad frequencies by compressing different bands of the sound. A fun and very powerful technique. A great option to have to shape sounds.

This can be useful, but not when boosting a very narrow bandwidth that high in volume. Pulling frequencies that far up you will always find "problematic frequencies", but this doesn´t actually represent the sound that´s there, but a distortion. He actually "fixed" a peak that was there because of bringing the narrow band waaaay up ;-) Do this with far less volume boost and it it´s a great mixing pattern in practice. BTW, thank´s for all the great content you guys provide!

I think this tutorial is flawed. When you are boosting with such little bandwidth, you will always have those odd sounding frequencies. You are verging on cutting out sine waves. Yes, when you isolate them, of course they will sound terrible, but in the mix, they help add to the sound.

Ryor that's what I'm saying!!! Any where he was sweeping sounded awful ! So what is the right way ??
@churlesjenkins4338
@churlesjenkins4338 7 жыл бұрын
+Ernie G. This is the right way. Just don't overdo it. Look at the frequency spectrum for said sound and cut out the frequencies that are peaking more than others just don't go crazy with it use a bit wider q and make sure you listen to your changes in a full mix.
@BF5099
@BF5099 7 жыл бұрын
Churles Jenkins I do not agree there. In this tutorial, he has cut with such little bandwidth that he is cutting out an unoticabely small amount of information. This basic concept is not useful in production, so I am struggling to see how this technique is "the right way".
@churlesjenkins4338
@churlesjenkins4338 7 жыл бұрын
+Ryor In an overall mix changes like this are gonna help you more than hurt you. Sure, we can debate about the narrowness of his q and such but this is a basic tutorial on how to do it. Obviously theres more ways than one to mix and I don't use this technique all the time but it helps.
@BF5099
@BF5099 7 жыл бұрын
Churles Jenkins This technique is not changing the actual sound enough, so it will not help in an overall mix. You would barely notice the difference between an A/B on each sound; so how are you expecting to hear difference in the overall mix?

He actually use to narrow q so every frequency could sound resonant with that type of filter. Next thing be carefull when you cut with narrow q because maybe you rid one problem (resonant ferquency) but you also add next problem witch is filter ringing.

All of the complaints I read in the comments. This technique is been used by pros for decades... He used an example that shows clearly so you can understand. And yes just as there a bad stuffs in nature as beautiful as Nature is. Like bugs and harsh cold weather. Also in most lovely sound of even the best guitar or vocal there could very well be a hidden nasty frequency that's not so obvious and doing this to all your tracks could make a huge difference than if you didn't do it. Do a mix this and and do another mix without and sincerely without bias you should see this removing "bad" this better. Someone share a golden secret the devil enters someone in the comments and everyone discredit it so they would benefit from the truth. I watched videos on KZbin for years about another topic and never learnt anything because every advice they gave never worked when I tried them or some of the advice I couldn't even try. But then came one day I found a guy the right knowledge of I felt was missing and soon some others came and said that guys was not legit. So I didn't use his great advice and since thern am still zero in that area. I hope I use the truth no matter what other's say. I will win no matter what. This is one of those videos. A great thing that would make a difference but let their eyes be blind and not get this or use it... Even if you find fault in his use of this. You still can't say all the pros using it are all retarded and you keyboard gurus here are the best engineers on earth with awards and platinum records. Thanks for this video I find no fault.....

People are not mad because of the technique. Pros do use it but they know what they are looking for, they hear that annoying frequency, partials or even jumping harmonics before and have a ball park idea of where that would be, then they use this technique to find the exact frequency which is creating the mess. Also they don't use such a narrow Q, 100q is super extreme and is only used rarely. Most engineers go for a little natural looking band to take the frequency out sometimes dynamically

Question about frequencies in general. Can they be directed at someone to cause harm. I've been experiencing an oddity at night and can't tell what it is. In a way, it can feel as though someone or something is trying to direct air out of my mouth. But there is also a constricting sensation or pressure sensation around the vocal cords or throat...worried about someone wanting to harm me. not sure how seriously to take this or who to talk to about it. I did experience something incredibly bizarre that began in 2011 with harassment...and lost five family members since 2020. Wishing to stay alive here and took to youtube to show myself in hopes it will keep me safe. 🙏🙏

Everything will sound bad when the EQ is boosted that way. You could cut all day until your sound is thin and weak. You should not cut out a frequency unless you can hear it causing a problem in the mix as a whole I think. If you need to make multiple cuts to a sound, then you might be better off choosing a new sound.

The problem with searching for bad frequencies like that is everything’s going to sound bad at a narrow q value +24db. The main thing is training your ears to hear unwanted frequencies so you can eliminate the right ones.
