TL;DW: 1) Seeing not hearing - close your eyes and try to listen when adjusting any parameters 2) EQing tracks in isolation - context is needed 3) Using presets - the preset makers have not listened to your track; you know what's best, not them Hope it helps ^^

Only amateurs don't hi pass everything under 150 hertz, if it's not a bass or a EDM kick of course. As an EDM veteran and a mix engineer of +15 years (+ mastering engineer work), I know this. Also done quite a bit of film audio.

I feel like equalizing in isolation is actually a good starting point. It allows me to get a better sense of the strong and weak points of the sound i'm using. After this though, your completely right, it needs to be EQ'd in the the context of the song.

I've been mixing/mastering and doing various front of house gigs. One tip I give to everyone about high pass filters is, push it to the right and pull it back until it sounds normal, you'll be surprised how much more you cut out without loosing anything.

In case you're still reading the comments, when you say that Logic's EQ is weird in that it messes with the Q factor when you drag--you can click and drag on the numerical Hz value instead of the puck in the graphic display to keep the Q value unchanged.

It's hard to avoid eqing in isolation, but anyway.... aren't there some situations where it's needed? Like when hunting for nasty frequencies and so?

Octopus On Fire It's definitely necessary to work in isolation sometimes, but if you do everything in isolation you'll end up with a terrible mix. Basically if you're working with a solo track you should un-solo often to hear how it sounds with the rest of the mix.

maybe just to hunt it but any adjustment should be made in the mix. One of those nasty frequencies might sound pretty pleasant when adjusted, if you just blindly pull it down all the way you might have gone too far and taken a bit of life out of the track.

With presets, keep in mind that you can always familiarize yourself with the presets in the plugin and that you can also tweak them. So, for any given instrument, if there is a particular eq curve that you already know you are going for, you can slap on whichever preset you know that corresponds to that curve and tweak it from there. Some plugin devs are better than others when it comes to making presets, but as long as you are familiar with what you have, then you can use any preset as a starting point to get you where you want to end up. It's just like anything else as far as taking the time to get to know your DAW, its stock plugins (or nonstock vst plugins), and the presets of those plugins. So I say don't discard the idea of presets, even in your eq and compressor plugins, as they can sometimes provide some great starting points--especially when first starting out and learning about eq and compression. Just don't depend on them without learning from them, blindly slapping them on a track going just by the name of the preset and letting that be it. Learn from them.

Hey! Regarding Logic Pro, how do you save your files? Like as a folder or project? And which of the assets do you tick? Thanks!! I also wanna look long term when I wanna back up my projects in an external hard drive. From testing out, as someone who has his samples on an external hard drive, I find saving as folder and not selecting any assets to work. Like when I try to open a project on another computer.

Engineers figured this out back almost 50 years ago. All analog boards since the early 70's have their high pass filter either at 100 hz, 75 hz, or 80hz. It was never higher and for good reason. They made the decision for you. They knew that cutting at 150hz or 250hz would butcher the bottom section of the track in question. Regarding Eq in isolation (Great advice!) I think what you mean to say is, "Don't EQ in solo." But I guess a lot of amateurs wouldn't know what you were talking about.

One more question, about making changes to EQ in isolation, which I have done basically all the time since I started EQ:ing. Now when I tried to do it in its context, I found it difficult to single out and to hear the effect of the EQ:ing as all the other sounds where getting in the way. Maybe I just have a bad ear but any advises would be good to get.

I like this video but there are uses for isolation. The use is knowing what you're giving up when you cut via context of the mix. Many times I find myself in a "pick and choose" between which track I want to cover a certain frequency band. A good example are two lead synth sounds or something like a lead synth sound and high bass sound that overlaps. Do I want more of the high bass or do I want more of the low synth? This is even more important when I'm layering sounds to make one sound. Also, there are a lot of "mid/side" tricks you can do to manage space in a mix. In his example above, I may slide some of the guitar bass more to the side and the low bass mono/mid. I'm not saying it will sound good, but it's worth a try, right?

Tip #1 Don't use EQ just for the sake of using EQ. Start with diagnosing what is wrong. Then fix that. You can't hit a target if you don't even know what you're shooting at. In most of my mixes I never even armed the EQ. I always tried to get a great sound before even printing. That begins with a great sound source. If your guitar sounds bad, then shit in equals shit out. Same with any other instrument. Second, mic choice is paramount. We had 3 U87s and yet most of the time that was hardly the right mic. In fact, U87s are rarely the right mic! Know the response of your microphones and know where they should be placed. That's where you want to close your eyes and experiment. If you get the right mic and the right placement then you're 90% there. Same thing goes for setting up your mic pre correctly. I can't tell you how many times I heard mic pres over driven or under driven. There is a right place for your gain and it's just as critical as a great sounding source, the right mic and the correct mic placement. (remember, close mic-ing is rarely the right choice. Most people close mic because they have a noisy environment. However, distance mic-ing is generally much more authentic.) Lastly, be cautious of anything between the mic pre and tape (or DAW). Compressors must be mild and I'd never print with a processor as you are stuck with it once you print. As I said, if you do these things you'll find you hardly ever need EQ. Just thought I'd toss in 2 cents. (drops mic. Broke mic. Damn it!! That was a very expensive mic!!)

Lars Ekman well if i guess you have 8 slots to put plugins in. If you put a plugin in slot 1 it reads that first then it reads slot 2. So if you put a sidechain in slot 1 and put a compressor and add 100db(just a example). Then it overwrites the sidechain. But if you turn it the plugins around it works as you want to! :D

Typically, reverb is something people use last because you don't want to create noise and mud your mix up. Sometimes I use light compression on reverb though! It all depends on many different factors. I wouldn't follow any preset order on effects. Rather, I would learn each effect individually and understand what it means to change the order of each effect. Hope this helps :)

I also tend to put a gate effect as the very last plugin in my chain. It helps to prevent the reverb from lasting too long and muddying up the following sounds, especially on drum samples. Something I've found that helps create clarity in the mix.
