I’ve installed many many Goodman units. Never had an issue. I’ve got some out there that I’ve installed over 20 years ago and they’re still going strong. Ive installed just as many Carriers and I can honestly say that I’ve had more leakers / issues with ICP. Their commercial offerings are complete junk in my opinion. The debate over what brand is the best will always exist. They all have their nuances. I believe the quality of the install is more important than the name on the equipment and I tell my customers that. I stay away from NuBrite. It works well, but it will definitely take paint off of coated coils and also turns galvanized roofs black. I use Cal Clean HD or Tripower. By the way, I would have washed the other one too. 😉 I love your channel, your honesty, knowledge and work ethic. 👍

I have a Goodman A/C only unit, much like the model in this video, and it has worked well over the last 20 years or so. Had to replace one capacitor, nothing else. I also have a Trane heat pump for another zone. It's only about 7 years old, and it has also been reliable. I agree with others that the quality of the installation (including specifying the appropriate equipment in the first place) and reasonable attention to preventative maintenance are more important than brand.

Got my junky old Goodman coils cleaned…hehehe. Loved your video. Thanks for helping a gal do it herself👍🏻✌🏻If I can do it, anybody can do it. I did need the help of a pry bar to get the cover back on and had to push pretty hard on the final corner of the bottom cage while pulling on the final corner of the cover, but by crackies, I got it! 💪🏻 My A/C guy lives and works by the same principles as you do. He treats his customers right. I didn’t feel the need to call him for this because I wanted to prove to myself that I can do easy maintenance. Plus he just cleaned it last winter. It wasn’t terrible but we’ve had a lot of dust storms and I’m doing fall cleaning anyway.

Decided to replace my still working, 17-year-old, 2.5 Ton Rheem with higher efficiency 3 Ton Rheem which paid for itself in about 2.5 yrs with the electricity savings here in South Florida. The original 2.5 Ton only required the replacement of one start capacitor and one condenser contactor during its entire life and required a limited intellect like me to do it. My dear brother went the whole hog and installed a fancy Trane which has required a specialized Trane brand technician four times and is not able to DIY "because of how complicated it is to do so", he says. Also says it even required a laptop to dianose! Feel bad for him as I imagine it's not easy drinking down several cups of that bitter regret-after-purchase brew. He recognizes that Trane is a superior product for superior personal incomes. Like your video and subscribed!

I put Goodman's in all my 9 rental homes, got rid of the Lennox, Ruud, Rheems, Carriers and the other junk !!!! They were nickel and dime and dollaring me to death !!!!! Blowing caps, fan motors burn up, circuit board every year, leaking here, leaking there, TXV problems....etc.... Now, all I've ever done is change a capacitor or contactor every few years !!!! I swear by Goodman, so easy to fix and don't have to wait weeks for a part from China or some other island in the pacific ocean !!!!!!! Oh, and did I mention I can buy 3 Goodman's for the price of 1 crappy Lennox or Trane !!!!!

I got a cheap fan and clean it every 6 month and grease it up and it's lasted me 2 years 😜 but for real the coils getting dirty and overheating the pump can cause it to eventually burn out........sometimes you can't win man........ bare in mind just because it's a known good brand doesn't mean it won't give you issues if not maintained properly 🙂

My dad taught me as a teenager back in the late 70 to clean those every year in the spring before they were needed. we would vac out the leaf buildup and just used a hose with a sprayer on it. then while it was drying he would bring the fan in the garage and put oil in the holes marked oil. that simple yearly maint made it last and almost never had break down beyond a cap or blower motor in the house I do it to my home now as well. The only thing is, the fans don't have oil holes on them anymore. And now they break down a lot more cause you can no longer oil the bearings

Next level junk. 😉 I’ve had multiple Trane and Rheem systems in my properties I manage that get 15 or 20 years plus. Never had a Goodman make it anywhere near that. My oldest currently in service is a Rheem from 1993. It’s knocking 30 years in the rear end. In the south, Goodmans just wear out faster in this heat, where it’s 75 at night sometimes in the summer. Maybe up north where people have gas heat and use AC sparingly, Goodmans may be ok. 🤠

Thank you so much for the video. So many technicians that work for large companies, are too geared for SALE-SALE-SALE, as they make more commissions for every sale. It's Great to see a VERY HONEST technician going through patient and thorough examination and detailed quality service. I learned to use Commerical coil cleaner for a 2 year cleaning, and "Simple Green" brand cleaner every 6 months. My unit is 12 years old and cooled great. You may want to contact that customer and have them also move the CENTRAL VACUUM DIRTY AIR DISCHARGE that is directly behind the Goodman unit - as well as the dryer vent. I have 3 Amana units which are just Goodman with the Amana badge. One heat pump and 2 A/C. No issues from the condensing units other than a couple bad capacitors. Just changed one today that has a 5/5/2009 date on it. These are 13 year old units. Installed them myself after getting EPA 608 I, II and III certified. Had trouble finding an HVAC company to do it because they were all going out of business due to the 2008 financial crisis. Back in 2017, I had to replace all three evaporator coils due to the infamous leaks in the extremely thin copper pipes. Actually, I replaced the 2 that were in the gas furnaces because they were available at good prices. All aluminum. For the air handler, I could only find one coil that cost as much as a better air handler so I bought the better air handler instead with the aluminum coil. R410A was under $100 for 25 lbs back then. It's over $500 for 25 lbs today. The amana furnaces have stainless heat exchangers. Not sure if the goodman do also since the selling point of the amana is that stainless heat steel exchanger. Anyway, when the cap died, I noticed that the back and side of the A/C unit and heat pump in that location were caked with gray fuzz. The dryer vent is about 5 ft away so they've been sucking in all the dryer lint for about 5 years. We've been doing a lot more clothing because we have a teenage girl and she wears a weeks worth of clothing in a day so my wife is always washing and drying her clothing.

How Dare Thee! My Goodman is 24 years old, an R22 unit. It has Never seen a service technician except for the homeowner. My condenser unit is in the shade. So my CAP has never failed due to any over heating issues, but after 20 years, I simple changed it out for a shiny new Amrad Capacitor, my Contactor was still working good too, but I changed it out also, I think I got my monies worth. I clean the coils every year with my Nu-Calgon foaming coil gun and wand. Keep the leaves and debris out of the center compressor area, even check the Schrader valves for leaks, don't want to lose any freon. I can afford the highest efficiency brands but, I'm going to stick with Goodman. I kind of like the fact that every repair guy running around out there, has the replacement parts right on their truck, and I don't have to wait for parts shipped. Thats an additional value right there. Not that I EVER needed any, but it's a comforting thought..Lol

I don't work in this industry. OTOH, I took care of the water treatment for the Goodman R&D and the Goodman factory in Houston, so I walked through every month, until Daikin bought them out and moved the factory. Plus- Goodman was very involved in R&D, and torture testing. They would put units in rooms and run them in extreme temps and rain/humidity. Minus- Goodman (or their distributors) would sell to anybody with money and a truck or van. Nearly every problem with their units had a installation or maintenance problem.

Never use nubrite or any kind of acidic coil cleaner. Coils are made by extruding copper tubing thru aluminum fins. When u use acids they cause oxidation where copper contacts aluminum, oxidation acts as insulation causing drop in efficiency. Loose the acid, water hose and dish soap work great

Think he likes Goodman, LOL! We have 2 Goodman's on my house in Phoenix AZ since 1/07 and only charged once and I replaced the starter cap for upstairs unit. The AC guy wanted $300 to replace a cap that he said was $80. I went to electronic supply warehouse and picked one up for $40, although this was in 2015. I replaced the thing myself. Now whomever manufactured the air handlers upstairs has a lot to be desired as I have had to replace the blower motor on the same handler twice in '13 (for motor) and '16 (for both motor and cage blower) as AC man wanted over $700 ('13) which I had him do it, and quoted me $900 ('16). Maybe have the fact they both died in the middle of summer, LOL! I have electronic tech degree and my father is a certified electrician and AC tech so I called him up in FL and he gave me some pointers and here it goes; I DIY'd it, LMAO!! Replaced both motor and blower cage which was a stamped POS that separated so I spent extra and purchased one that was tack welded to the tune of $380. No problems since! We have the units checked every spring and I clean the compressors unit coils myself. Being a son of an Army vet and myself an ex-Navy squid, preventative maintenance is in my blood. It has literally saved us thousands of dollars.

Airflow is the issue. That much delta says the air is in contact with the coil much too long. Some of the causes would be slow fan speed, clogged fan blades, clogged coils, clogged filter, restriction in the ducts.

As a home owner, I have lint issues as well, not from the drier but we have dogwood trees in the neighborhood. I ended up buying an ac screen that wraps the outside of the unit. Then I can run my hand over it to remove the lint. It probably does reduce the air flow a little, but if monitored and cleaned regularly, less then getting the dogwood lint on the coils themselves.

The only people who down Goodman are the ones with Carrier, Trane, etc. on the side of their truck. The better 410 Goodmans also have a lifetime warranty on the rotary compressors. Talk to someone who services all brands and they will tell you that most premature failures belong to the units with the fancy nameplates. BTW, in 2006 or 2009 this unit could have been either 410A or R22. You need to check the plate on the inside panel to be sure.

Absolutely right on removing the top. Pretty easy to but a pain to install back on. I just cleaned mine today. Mine is a pain bc there isn’t enough wire and there isn’t a connection for the fan wires so I can pull it off. Have to prop it up and hope it doesn’t fall.

Fairly new to home ownership, didn't know these had to be regularly cleaned out. Hasn't happened in 4 years, so I'm guessing thats why im seeing HPS LOCKOUT codes when the temperature spikes over 100° Doesn't look too difficult now that I've watched someone do it. Thanks for posting!

Good and honest video. Several other things I'd do as well is: 1) Hand pick and vacuum out the loose leaves and debris from inside before foaming and cleaning with water. 2) Take the outside housing off (simple to do) to be able to foam and rinse the coils better. 3) Use less water pressure.

The Goodman heat pump installed in our home lasted 9 years. A total piece of junk. We spent several thousand dollars in repairs over and above the annual service visits during the 9 years. All of my neighbors with Goodman heat pumps had similar problems and replaced with different brands. Life spans of the Goodman units were 7 to 12 years; all were new construction installation. I won’t have a Goodman unit ever again.

The subdivision I live in is about 11 or 12 years old. I believe all of the houses were built with cheaper Goodman AC/Furnaces. When building a new house, they definitely go the cheapest route with everything. My house was built in 2010. The condenser unit is still running good, however, the AC coil froze up last year due it leaking Freon.

Arranging for re-locating that dryer vent away from the HVAC units would seem to be an absolute #1 priority for that customer; to pony up the money & actually get it taken care of.

Goodman gets a bad wrap because of their affordability which means low end techs/installers are doing the jobs. I’ve had 2 issues in 10 years with my Goodman installs and 1 was an installer error.

I imagine for a house of that value, they'd not only expect a complete job, but would insist on it. Side note, I have a Goodman (2020 model), and it's been performing very well. It replaced a Rheem unit that was at LEAST 19 years old.

In my opinion Goodman is a great value for the money and fairly reliable. Trane makes an excellent product but overpriced.

Goodman is a 10 year unit they aren’t quality units trane is more expensive but you get what you pay for at the end of the day I’ve replaced a Goodman system that was 5 years old and the system was a lemon all together I will say if you flip house and you need a new system then go ahead and put a Goodman in because they’re cheap but if you are talking about long term reliability go with a trane

Our last residence had a Janitrol unit approximately 22 years old, which finally quit. We replaced it with a Goodman, which always worked fine the 9 years we had it. It’s now been working for about 14 years, far as I know. Goodman units are everywhere around this area. If they’re so bad, wonder why so many people buy them?

I’ve personally cleaned over 2000 condensers, I pull the panels off of EVERY SINGLE ONE. Also clean out the bottom. That install location was horrible. Good job to the original home builder for running the dryer vent out so it stops up the units twice a year

I have the money to put in a Trane, Bryant, Carrier, etc. My Trane is about 25 years old, but I will be 80' soon, so I got three other estimates and all three above compared to the Goodman were three times the price for the same Seer rating, 4 ton unit, etc. and combined with an 80,000 BTU furnace. Go figure! After reading over 75+ reviews I see Goodman scores about 90% favorability even over these more expensive brands. I also have an older A.C. Tech guy and am concerned how long he can keep on keeping on, so I have a back-up plan for that too, another friend who is young that has his own Air & Heating company, just in case I out live my tech. I outlived all my doctors, so why take a chance. I believe this case was the dryer duck issue and the family took terrible care of the unit too. If you do the annual cleaning, etc. on the Goodman it will just go into my estate, as we can not take a Trane with you either. I know the Egyptian Pharaohs tried to take even boats with them, but they still sit inside the tomb. I saw them, so my Goodman will go with the estate sale as you can not take them with you!

Obviously, you being a DIY person will explain why you did not catch the key factors here that do not want a very thorough preservation job of this particular unit. For one thing, it is an R 22 unit with a refrigerant leak. Did you not catch that? Fatal issues, but the leaves in the bottom are worth my time and the customers money for me to remove ??

Looks like the condenser fan shroud was missing. Maybe someone put a larger fan blade in. Hence - That condenser might/gonna struggle a lil bit without it. Yes, they're a bit of a PITA. (I have two of 'em of my own that I struggle with each year when I do my maintenance! Dual coils on a 4 and a 5 ton unit) Good job as always, Ted!

I'm one of those people that weigh my refrigerant, and deploy supply and return air probes to calculate a target superheat and temp drop on an otherwise healthy piston system. I also recognize that when I'm working 15 year old leaking R-22 system the customer isn't ready to replace it, and just wants the can kicked down the road another season, there is no "correctly charged!"

I've got the same Goodman condenser, was severely plugged up coil last year; but still kicking it!!. Severely neglected for 15 years, have no issues whatsoever. I gave it the deep clean with the Venom Coil cleaner, and it cooled the house down right quick!!. The only problem is getting the side panels off, kind of a pain; but take your time and be careful installing.
