I’m a retired organizer. I found that most hoarders only wanted me to compact their hoard for the purpose of making space to bring in more stuff. In 30 years of work, I didn’t have one single family recover from hoarding, regardless of the amount of therapy they received. Usually the houses went back to their previous condition within months. What was most amazing to me was the amount of money that went into purchasing items that would never be used and sometimes never even seen again.

@@feliciawilliams5720 Absolutely bless him. These hoarder houses have to be unloaded every now and then. I worked for one lady who put so much stuff in her attic that the weight of it split the house framing and one of the walls fell out. She was lucky it didn’t cave in and bury her alive. The house was a complete loss and her insurance wouldn’t pay because she had created the disaster herself. All for a bunch of stuff that you and I would call worthless. Very sad.

Absolutely, that is all it takes. And illness very easily leads to depression. Add in no support system and it’s pretty much a guarantee. I don’t know of anyone who wouldn’t become severely depressed with that combination because every part of your life that was normal and that human beings need to survive is stripped away at that point.

Let's take a moment to acknowledge the challenge here: organizing(bad enough) AND cleaning without staging space. Professional organizers have their long folding tables for sorting, cleaning, etc., in a central location. Our hero has none of that. The patience and the process involved in this project are off the charts.

Two rooms and a shed to go. MDC have helped me so much in the last few months - one or two videos in the morning get me moving I hope you are going ok now.

This is like my parents house. My mom kept an immaculate home for decades and after the death of three close relatives she started to “hold onto” things. Now there is 3 houses worth of “things” in the basement, garage( to the ceiling), and bedrooms, hallways…there are only two pristine rooms in the house. It breaks my heart… I hope you didn’t get sick from the droppings. You are truly a blessing to people who are overwhelmed by their spaces. Glad I found your channel

Last fall, we had a close call with a wildfire in our area. We had to go through our stuff and decide what we would take if we had to evacuate, and what we'd leave to burn. It made me see all of that extra (flammable) stuff we have as fuel for the fire. I've gotten rid of a lot since then, and when it's hard to decide, I just remember how I felt that week.

We went through the same this May, wildfire evacuation with no idea if we'd come back to a home or not. We packed our camper as we had enough warning before the order to evacuate happened (I get a visceral reaction now hearing phones give out an emergency/amber alert, probably some PTSD from it) and it made me realize just exactly what I would be sad to lose. Of course we couldn't bring everything that we didn't want to burn as family and pets came first, but the items I felt sick to my stomach knowing I may lose them are what made me realize what's irreplaceable vs just "stuff".

Wow‼️ I’m SO sorry you n yours had to experience that❣️ It definitely makes one realize what’s truly important n what’s not. As sad of a situation it is, it’s also an excellent way to really figure out if you had to walk away n possibly let it all burn, what exactly would you take. Definitely an excellent analogy for minimizing n getting rid of stuff. I can’t imagine losing ones home to a fire. I’m happy y’all didn’t have to either. 💜💜💜

Mr. Floodpumper, thanks for great advice toward the end of this video about how to decide what to keep and what to toss. We all can use that reminder. If you put it on your to-do list once each season to get rid of stuff you simply no longer use, you probably won’t get to that stage of actually forgetting what you have because it’s buried piles deep into your hoard.

What amazes me is we only have so many years and so much time in those years to accomplish things. I'm not judging but it's hard to imagine people never having a light bulb going off and saying realistically I'll never live long enough to use all this. I've seen this in organized craft rooms often. People are in their 60's and have enough supplies to last 4 lifetimes. I think people just can't stop buying. Vicki

as someone who lives in a room I'm renting from a hoarder...people who hoard things see the things as an extension of themselves. Throwing things away feels like removing a part of their own body. Bringing stuff in feels like their "self" is gaining something. While on many levels it makes no sense to me, and I'm a minimalist at heart so it stresses me out no end, I've had enough conversations with my roommate (and other people who hoard on a lesser level) to get a glimpse into what's going through their heads. Ultimately it's not about using the stuff, it's about possessing it (and sometimes just the *potential* for use creates a better feeling than actually using the item)
@richardeidemiller6739
@richardeidemiller6739 Жыл бұрын
@@starjewel16 Agreed and understood however I was alluding to others ( normally functioning individuals) that I see on videos of their craft rooms. They are not hoarders but need to own every new supply and multiples of it all. The rooms are clean, organized but the sheer volume of what they own can never be used in their lifetime. Supplies like paint, mediums, stamp pads all dry up and become useless, stack after stack of scrapbook paper and massive shelving units and plastic containers to hold it all. At some point I would think they would use up what they have instead of purchasing more. The rooms look like store stock. I feel alot of this is shopping addiction. Vicki
@crowcalls
@crowcalls Жыл бұрын
Some of it is absolutely about shopping and the joy of a pretty thing. However, it can also be hard to use things up in the same way you might elsewhere. I think it’s particularly difficult for people who do multiple crafts. Say you make a garment in orange, you need orange sewing thread. You may only use half a bobbin, but no other colour will work, so you do need to get some. You can easily end up with more thread than you could use, but none of them are interchangeable, and you have no idea which ones will get reused. It gets worse if you also repair clothes, or weave, or spin, or knit. I have also noticed that often when a crafter dies, their family doesn’t know what to do with their stash. They sell the entire thing together - which never gets sorted by the new owner, aside from pulling out a couple bits they want to use. I draw, and I do have a problem with mediums I use rarely. I might not use up my purple paint for a long time, but when I need it I really do need it. Personally I manage by keeping my inventory to only mediums I know I like and not encouraging gifts.

My mom fell into hoarding when she began developing dementia. Your mention of this lady's laundry room gave me flashbacks to cleaning out my mom's laundry room and doing twenty loads of laundry. Bless you for helping these folks.

When I bought my current home, my husband and I inherited all the previous owners decades-long hoard, and this video seems eerily similar. Thanks for doing this, hoarding is hard on everyone it affects, and seeing my experience reflected here is somehow comforting and validating.

My aunt and uncle had moved to a house in the middle of a cornfield in PA in the 60s -- the area's since been built-up, so it's just a suburb now. When they moved in though, the cornfields were still around, but they never got mice in the house because the area also had a ton of copperheads. They never got in the house either, because with the cornfields getting developed on, it was like an all-you-can-eat buffet for them outside.

As I have gotten older I have become a minimalist and this would certainly drive me insane. I told my children years ago not to buy me any more what nots and if they insisted on doing something for me on the holidays cash would be preferable LOL. My son recently called me and asked me what I could actually use and I told him cleaning supplies. He went shopping and it was absolutely the best gift I've received. Something I could use and not have to dust

Hey Mr. Fludhumper, I’m a fairly new subscriber and absolutely love your channel. I made some of your All Purpose Cleaner and it’s a game changer. It is the only thing that will clean my stainless steel appliances without streaking. I’ve learned so much from your strategic thinking and ability to make sense of the absolute worst cleaning situations. Your methods work for everyday cleaning too…it keeps things from getting overwhelming. And poor you having to deal with Jason! You must be up at nights worrying about what kinds of shenanigans he’ll pull next. 😂😂😂

I love your videos. When I started watching my health was not good and felt like one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel. Seemed to not be able to do anything. Watching you say just do one little section at a time. I had a paper where I'd write what I was able to do. If one day could only take a shower. That's what would be on my list. So now I've cleaned two bedrooms LR bath dining room and working on my kitchen. May take me a week to do one room but now I feel proud of how my house is looking. It is not up to the standard that I had in my younger years but it is looking so much better. I am 78 but just trying to do a little bit everyday. It has been a process but I'm able to do a little more each day. Thank you for being an encourager for me.

While watching this video I began to understand why I like to watch your videos. I've listened to organizers before on YT, but they don't show themselves actually doing the work, and since I'm a visual learner, watching you do it is beneficial to me. Also, I think that my cleaning style or method is similar to yours. I'm also a "symmetrical" person. It bothers me sometimes if things are not symmetrical and I keep addressing that. I don't have any place else in the house to store things in order to empty a room completely and clean it, then put things back. I have to declutter and clean the room while the rest of the belongings remain in the room. Your videos are very helpful to me. I'm also about to start a job helping someone else clean, so your videos are very useful. Thank you! 😊
