Cleaning a Sigma 50mm 1.4 EX DG HSM from inside!

In this episode I´m showing how can you clean a Sigma 50mm 1.4 EX DG HSM from inside. Be careful not to scratch the glass and good luck!

I have the same lens, I'm using it with APS-C. In my case the AF did not even worked, so I had to give it for firmware update. I've asked them also to calibrate it with the body. It cost me 50E, but now the lens has spot-on AF.

Hi. Can you tell me how did you take the frontal glass element off ? I am having a hard time taking it off. I was trying to turn the front glass counter clockwise, but it seems it will take forever to take it off. I was turning it for almost a day but to no avail. It just keeps on turning and turning. Any suggestion would be a big help. TIA !

this is a gd lens. finally able to out but the front element have 2 lens, I cant seem to take it out. I'm using wrong micro cloth, now it doesn't look clean, but I'm glad to use alcohol to clean the fungus off.

domienz II this lens is very sharp in the middle and it makes very nice bokeh, but the auto focus is terrible. I would like to have the Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art version, I heard it's very good in everything.

ofc it is the best 50mm on the market. i opened my lens but unfortunately dusts are inside the front elements which are inside the front piece you ejected. can i also open that front part?

domienz II I didn't try it, I searched for some info on the net but couldn't find anything. It's frustrating when you look at those dust particles and you can't get it out... I think those dust particles in front elements can't be seen on the pictures, because it's out of focus. The dust in the rear elements can be a trouble. If you want to sell it, then in the front can be a problem too. If I find out how can I disassemble the front element too, then I will make a tutorial for that too.

yeah, it looks like glued. i dont wanna break it. picture quality is superb no problem, just to confort myself like you said whenever i look at lens i see only those 2-3 part of dust (((: i should get over it but i dont know how. and i dont want to change mine, because i tried 2-3 different 50mm 1.4 ex dg all of them have inaccurate auto focus, some times 5cm behind, 10 cm front you cant predict where it is going to focus. this copy is perfectly focusing.

Do you know if the metal part where the cover attached is removable? Mine got bend yesterday, advise, never give your camera to your anyone! Now, the manual focus is stucked. Af works but with a very weird noise.

I've tried twisting the lens like your video, but it feels like only the lens itself is rotating and not the piece that you've shown to pull out. Am I stuck with just bringing it in for servicing then?

These two models are very similar... I was looking for a video for 30mm, it seems there is none. For the first time, it was hard to unscrew it, if you are going to try it, be careful, maybe it is different from inside.

This method does NOT work with a Sigma EX DC HCM, 30mm f/1.4. The front element housing is not threaded to unscrew like the 50mm. Instead, the front element housing is secured by three screws accessed by disassembly from the REAR. You would have to unscrew the back face plate, then, disconnect at least the main ribbon cable from the base plate. Setting that aside, you can see the whole of the rear lens, the control and communication ribbon cables attached to the semi-circular, control circuit board. At the very bottom of the rear lens well you can see three cut outs in the lowest section, that exposes the three screws. Once they are removed, the front lens element drops out. It's a fiddley job and all the tiny screws are easily stripped and the thin ribbon cables are delicate; be carful.

After we demount it. Is it possible some wet air will go in and contaminate inside and cause a fungus or sth later. I mean, may be they close the lens with vacuum. And may be i'll give harm after demounting it just because of the wet air?

If your lens is good, you don´t need to open it, but if you have fungus already...

@@ayhancapan I would recommend the Sigma 85mm 1.4 it's the sharpest lens at 1.4. I have the Canon 85mm 1.4 IS USM L, it's not the sharpest at 1.4 but it focuses very accurately and it has image stabilization which is very helpful in churches at weddings and darker places. This lens Sigma 50mm 1.4 EX DG HSM is the sharpest at 2.8, and we are not buying it for the 2.8, I made some very nice images with it, but it´s a little bit old now.

Probably totally different. I have nearly the same lens as this user, only 30mm, but it doesn't unscrew like this, it requires dismantling from the rear to get at three small screws. I am unfamiliar with your model and can't offer advice. Just know it's bound to be different.

Thanks for watching! This 85mm 1.4 EX DG HSM looks very similar to the 50mm, but it can be different from inside. I don´t recommend doing it, but if you have fungi or lots of dust particles in it... The front element unscrews a little hard, just be careful not to scratch it.

I didn't open the front element because I was afraid that after that there is no way back. If I buy another fast lens like this, I´ll try to open that front element somehow, I see there is a request for it. You should ask Sigma... The first series of this lens came out with an AF problem. These lenses are repaired for free in a Sigma repair service, later they made the AF better in this model, but it never gonna be like the Canons L series. I have the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 Art and in darker places like churches it is struggling, you better check every important shot. Outside where the light is better it works fine, for video AF is great too. I think the older lenses of sigma are like this, I heard the new series are much better.

This is a sharp lens but tue af accuracy, ugh. Shouldve kept this lens as a manual focus only. 😓

The autofocus was never the strongest point of this lens. But the bokeh and the sharpness at f/2.8 is incredible. After opening it 2 times I shot a wedding and a baptism in a darkish church without AF problems. You have to check the picture after every shot because it likes to misfocus a lot! That's why it costs only 300€.

At the firt time it was a little hard, not too hard, just a little. Use your fingers or gloves, if you have a big sucker then use that too. Be careful not to scratch your lens!

@@yaupci That's bad. If your fingers are too dry, try to moisture your finger a little, make then stick to that glass. The first time I taught it won´t open.
