@@bglivingstonfishing We live in Laredo, Texas, by the Rio Grande river. When my dad was young, before I was born, he would catch alligator gar, bass, catfish, and other fish from the river. He would do that since he was a young boy. He passed away several years ago. Today the Rio Grande is polluted in Laredo, I feel to catch fish is not a good choice but people from Mexico use nets and trout lines for fish.

@@iian_ Hi. Since I live in Laredo on the river banks, the sister city, Nuevo Laredo on the Mexican side, dumps sewage in to Rio Grande river. I can fish from the river but I rather not and would need a fishing license too. The water flows eventual to Falcon lake, about 50 miles from Laredo, there is a small town called Zapata where people fish for gar, bass, catfish, carp, other fish. South Texas along the river needs rain to raise the river level but we are in a drought.

This is by far the best video for cleaning GAR that I’ve seen in on KZbin thus far. He’s funny and quirky in his own awkward way which makes the video more endearing and entertaining. Every part of the flesh he cut looked potentially delicious but when he cleaved the bone part at the end of the video and stated that you could fry it up. That’s the point where I wished I was present at the video. Excellent presentation!

This is the best video I have seen for cleaning gars. I am going to try and catch one and follow your video. I like your thinking about not throwing away the meat with the bones. When I catch large catfish, I like to cut them into steaks and fry them up. My neighbors only like filets. Not me. I fry my panfish with skin and bones after removing scales and guts. I even eat the tails. A piece of bread and sweet onion dipped in salt, that's a delicious meal. My mother said they would clean the heads on the big carp , buffalo and catfish of gills, eyes and tongue and then cook them with onions and garlic etc. They made a good soup to eat. Sometimes they had rice with it. This was during the depression. I think the day is coming when people will be wanting a bowl of fish heads and garfish too. I am hungry right now thinking of some delicious fried gar. I like to eat snapping turtles. Have you ever tried to clean Asian carp? They are white meat, don't smell and China has a processing plant in Kentucky. They are cleaning, freezing and sending all that meat to feed china. Someone needs to find ways of processing Asian carp to give us another food source. There are many people in the USA not receiving enough to eat. There are many elderly eating a can of soup a day. The fish would supply needed protein and fat. Thanks again for the video. Going to try and find the frying of gar video you have.

I have 2 friends that might be able to turn what you tossed into the can into unbelievable works of art.🤔 One is a traditional bowyer and might be able to use the heavily salted skins as ornamentation on many things. The other is into bone articulation or bone taxidermy. He is highly skilled with mammals and such, but I've been giving him loads of fish skulls to work on. Flippin beautiful results!!! Both of these individuals are on my channel from late last summer. If you are interested, and if they are receptive, let me know. Let's try to utilize ALL of that amazing resource! Mannnn save that skin. You can cut it to 1-2 inch strips and dry it. Dogs love it as a treat. I normally just used the back strap, was always told the eggs were poisonous. Maybe that’s just for longnose gar.

Saw some gar while fishing for crappie this year, asked some gabachos if you could eat them and they were like, "no thats trash fish" or I also got some, "they're too hard to clean" comments. Great info and great video, gonna go back and fish specifically for some gar, thanks for the video!

I learn something every day, Thanks for teaching me how to process an alligator gar. To bad they don’t have these fish in Oregon. If there are I’ve never heard of it. Still waiting for the steelhead spring run to make it up the Rogue River... Thanks again, I enjoyed your video... KC in Or.

Great video! I never kept the gar because no one I knew bothered to learn how to clean them so I was hesitant to try by myself. I am going out today and hopefully bring one of those puppies in. Can't wait. Checking out your products too. Kudos to you and the camera person. Have a wonderful week!

Excellent instructive video and as good a filet and clean of the alligator gar as I have ever seen. Something that I think should be said that is very important; here in Louisiana a lot of people like to eat the roe or eggs of fish, they can be quite tasty. But Don't Eat the Roe of Gar, It is Toxic to Humans. Enjoyed your demonstration and I will be jugging for gar some time this week. It's a tasty fish.
