Cleaning and Bleeding The Nuffield Fuel System

Thanks heaps from Australia, was clearing regrowth with my old 460 yesterday when it gave up the ghost. Sounded like fuel, drained the bowl and filters but couldn’t get it going. Was about to call the local bush mechanic to come help but watched your video this morning and gave it one more shot following exact procedure shown. Got it going! Top marks mate, you saved the day.

I used to drill a hole in the top of the pencil filter and be careful not to allow the tank to run down that low. It generally worked pretty well with the exception of the 4/65's. The pencil filters had a habit of detaching which then led to the fuel tap blocking up.

I always recommend a very strong magnet 🧲 placed as far away as possible from fuel pump feed. Will collect rust present and future from old tanks

Great no nonsense video ! My problem is when I come back to my 460 after being idle 2 weeks,it needs bleeding,everytime.Where its taking in air is beyond me Any ideas ?

Hi, The lift pump is the most likely cause, most Nuffields I have purchased have had faulty valves in the lift pump. Either replace with new pump or recondition with repair kit, series Landrover kits have same valve and are a fraction of the price of Nuffield repair kits. If the fuel tank is full then fuel level will be above filter and problem should not occur!

What are the 2 small 8mm screws below the 13mm bleed screws??

They hold on the side plate, remove them and the side plate and you can see the pumping elements moving up and down.

@@montegoson hi thanks for the reply, I had the plate off and flushed that area out as a gunge was in there. I'm on about the 2 8mm screws directly under the 13 mm bleed screws. The screw downwards

@@robnulty9462 sorry, I got the wrong bolts. The ones you ask about hold the plates with the thread that the side plate bolts go into.
