Its great to think that this book was probably thrown in someones bag or kept on a messy desk dangerously close to a drink, but now its treated with such delicate care.

@lelturtlesboi8297 Yes, because when they played it back someone said, "Ooh that sounds nice, you should put ASMR in the title." They're the Natural History Museum, their interest is in artifacts, not in ASMR.

@@rayflynn162 Check the V&A Museum series dedicated to ASMR. If they aren’t ASMR for you is ok, ASMR is very subjective, they are for me and that’s what counts.

I love things like this! How does someone get into this line of work? Seems so peaceful just preserving books and helping to elongate their lives.

Could be anything from Archivist studies to Museology or things like that.

As an archivist I love seeing people ask this question! So exciting to see people interested in getting into the work. Museum studies, or a library science certification or degree :) a lot of programs also have special concentrations offered (not that you have to have it) for conservation and preservation!

You can get a degree in a few things that could funnel you in to this. I worked at the kentucky museum and research library through college. And I would suggest trying to do that! I worked directly under the museum curator helping with exhibits. I wasn’t trained to handle antique items or anything like that, but that’s exactly what our curator had a degree for. I can’t remember exactly what it’s called though. I didn’t go into that field-it was just my campus job. But I learned a lot. And there were several student employees that wanted to be museum curators and were in school for that.

You can study for a qualification in Information Management or Library Science or similar in order to become a librarian. There are specific roles for librarians or archivists specialising in rare books.

That was wonderful. I learned a lot from your video, such as wrapping a book for tying and more. You have beautiful nails btw! An inspiration for this old nail biter! I worked in school libraries sometimes and always had a penchant for covering books to look after them. I still cover my new book covers carefully with plastic. One niggle...the sound at the beginning was very muted and hard to understand. Thanks for the instructional video.

Wow! Just Wow! I have seen books in museums like this before but this is the best tutorial on the know-how!! I have some immensely precious first, second and third editions of Charles Lyell, Charles Darwin, Alfred Russel Wallace, Thomas Henry Huxley etc., in my natural history library. And now I know how to preserve them with love! Thank you very much indeed Natural History Museum!

@@C.Hughes-Lloyd idk if this is like a reference to something, but in case it isn't, the v&a museum's youtube channel has been doing these types of asmr videos for a while now. seems like it's catching on as a way to showcase their stuff and encourage people to go to their exhibitions.

Why do you start by wearing gloves but then after the cleaning, you can touch with bare hands?

The gloves might be to protect their hands not the paper. When it comes to handling delicate items like old paper, some conservators handle with bare hands. More accidents & tears happen when you wear gloves and don't have as much finger sensitivity.

You're not meant to handle books/paper with gloves, just freshly clean, dry hands. You lose dexterity and can't feel the paper properly with gloves on which is how you end up tearing pages (like what famously happened in that episode of Who Do You Think You Are)

All that's needed is a good cutting mat, a metal ruler with a non-slip backing and an extremely sharp scalpel! I've been making book enclosures for the past 26 years, I would certainly recommend 4 flaps rather than a dust jacket.

Generally, many people who work in fields like conservation, history of art, or anthropology are from middle class - upper class backgrounds. They're usually not poor, and have probably have family money or passive incomes to support a job that is usually not very well paid or secure.

@RedArtistx This is simply untrue. I was an academic and career advisor for students pursuing arts and humanities careers for many years. Conservators come from many different backgrounds, and given that it's a specialized field, there's plenty of work to be had, given that it takes a decent amount of training.

I mentioned in a comment below that I was a academic and career advisor for students looking to get into the arts and humanities fields, so I actually helped get students into these types of roles. If you are interested, you generally need an undergraduate degree in a relevant field, which can be studio art, art history, archeology, chemistry, or materials sciences. Then you need to obtain a Master's degree from an accredited university. University of Delaware actually has a program where you can take undergrad courses that are directly relevant. Then you'll need to pursue a two year apprenticeship with a museum, gallery, heritage center, or university, which is generally where most students land their first job. Conservators generally make 50-80k per year depending on their location. Don't listen to the naysayers. It doesn't pay like most STEM fields, but it pays plenty to live a quiet life. I always recommend that students do their core classes at a local community college before going to university if they are pressed for finances.

@@rskye11 thank you for that info. It would be quite a bit less than what I make now but the work life balance sounds amazing. If I could do it all over again, I would do something like this.

The ASMR was effective, but I have to question whether book wrapping with such thick paper/cardboard was beneficial, given that the book needs to be tied shut. The book will become somewhat warped, and will continue to decay inside the wrapper regardless.

I’m very sorry, but I don’t know how this woman got this job at the NHM. Within the first 6 mins. I can see too many things she’s doing that are incorrect. I had to stop watching. I’m a collector of antique books with my oldest dating to 1698. Jeez-um !
