Brilliant workmanship. Earlier you said you would be quicker ‘with friends’ to help. You actually have a bunch us out hear regard you as a friend.....you are our kind of people. I started my own work at 15yrs (60 years ago) and mostly worked alone. You know everything is done right, you learn about levers, ropes, chains, wedges, and when done, who cares if it took longer? I do love people and at social gatherings love to clear used plates, pots pans, work alongside other likeminded folk. Had an adorable wife until leukaemia 6yrs ago. Married at 25yrs and am back to my original simple life but now full of precious memories. One day I will fix tractors, whilst she plants stuff and feeds what will be our large family for I know “the meek shall inherit the earth “ and she was meek. Now I have you to teach me about fixing machinery so please keep going....we love you..friend..

I am amazed at the pride you put in your work. It may not yield perfection on this D4, but it makes a difference when one cares.
@cheesegrits1962 жыл бұрын
I was going to explain what you were doing wrong with the primer but you figured it out. My one recommendation is move your water trap at least 25 feet away from the compressor. The hot newly compressed air has to cool down for the water trap to function well. If you do this your won't need any other filter at the gun and won't have to empty the tank as often. Trust me this helps a lot! 35 years in body shops.
@RobertFay2 жыл бұрын
*- Gosh it is so great to see such wonderful help come along for Matt on this site.*
@cheesegrits1962 жыл бұрын
Just to help a little more. Pipe from the compressor to the water trap with steel black pipe, this will act as a heat sink and cool the air more. If you use an air hose or PVC pipe they will get as hot as the air inside them and will not work as well.

*- [ Matt ] I have been impressed with everything you have done on this project right from the start !* *- I agree, painting at this level of care is a pain in the butt...but thank you for doing so...it is you.* *- Many people value restoration to show the work that the machine has done. That is all good, too.* *- Your pride and self esteem has properly grown into self appreciation that by rights needs to be seen by you in the future...and that, in my mind, is why painting this is so important...it is a rebirth of the machine, yes, but much more importantly it is a birth of yourself...and THAT is what I think is important.* *- I am pleased for you.*

A great effort on the clean up and prep, it's 90% of the battle. One tip for painting, keep the spray gun moving fairly quickly back and forth in smooth even strokes and go past the edge of whatever you're spraying. It looks easier than it is, but practice makes perfect :)

I would turn the little knob on the side of the gun so you have a wider fan pattern. Along with that turn the knob in the back counter clockwise so you actually allow more paint to flow through the tip. Have to do both. Overlap about 50%. Lastly, make sure you are not inadvertently closing the air adjustment close with your little finger. It is on the bottom of the handgrip. Good luck

Yeah, I hoped that the Harbor Freight gun instructions covered the gun adjustments. Also wondering if it has a big enough tip (1.7+) for primer?
@davidcorbin73582 жыл бұрын
@@mrpesky163 1.7 is big enough. I use that size all the time for primer on that kind of vehicle. You might also consider a little more reducer. I use alot of that brand of color tou are planning on using. I typically go 16oz of paint and 4 or 5 oz of reducer. But you have to be carefull and not get too much on, (runs), so tighten up that back knob a bit or thicken it up. Try a little on the bottom side of the hood. You can always thicken it up. The smaller the tip the thinner it will have to be usually.. you can have good results with 1.7 on the color as well. FYI, That little filter goes big end down in the gun before you screw on the paint container. Painting is alot of work! Cleanup sucks. Have enough mixing cups so you dont have to keep cleaning them

I realise you probably don't want to move the motor again but you'll find that it is easier to steer if two wheels are fixed and the other two rotate. If you have a look at supermarket trolleys they have this arrangement. In the trolley arrangement the fixed wheels are at the front (the reverse of a car). Good luck with the rest of your refurbishment.
