Good to see someone else use soapy water to clean their records. I will have to look out for a label protector. Great idea. As for the covers I use lighter fluid to clean mine. It's great at removing sticky residue from price labels and evaporates without staining. Use carefully on non laminated covers though. Also on covers with dark or black edges I cover up any wear and tear with a Chartpak black or brown marker pen. The black pen is very black, as opposed to the dark purple ink of other pens, so gives great results

I've some records covered in hairlines yet play through and a number of records that have minimal hairlines but jump and skip. I used your method of cleaning on a seemingly clean ep and it played through without any issues! Many Thanks.

Don't use tap water to rinse a record, tap water has minerals and impurities that can get lodged in the grooves. Best to use distilled water.

Do not use water at all. You use wood glue to clean records. It is pretty simple, you put wood glue on the record, it gets down in every groove. Let it dry, then peel it off, and it brings every bit of dirt and debris with it. Wood glue is how you deep clean records, because as I said, it gets in all the grooves, and removes everything on the record. Everybody that knows about cleaning records knows wood glue is the way to go.

@@LeftFootMediaNZ Tap water is never as pure as distilled water which is why it is used in sonic cleaners. Distilled water is about $1/gallon in the US, a small price to pay. I used it in my Spin & Clean

That Nagaoka protector is indispensable. Yes, run the records under then sink. Get good and aggressive with them. These sorts of cleaning methods are at parity with ultrasonics. Save money and by more records. Thanks for doing this, and yes, I subscribed.

Never thought of checking out those kinds of brushes, but thats a good idea. Guess the hair dryer is a good idea. When i cleaned a massive stack of 45s i set up 2 fans to help keep things move along. I used something called a Fuzzy Wuzzy. Its meant for cleaning blinds, but it worked amazing for 45s. Also helped having a 12 pack of long neck beer bottles to place them on in front of the fans.

Great video and I like it just the way you made it ! I’ve always given my 35yo vinyl collection a careful rinse under the faucet before playing it, but you have certainly taken it to a more meticulous level ! Definitely getting the baby brush and the label protector and I know I have a fine toothbrush around the house. Great album. I was so lucky play with my band as the opening act in june1981 during their Waiata-tour in the Netherlands. We did four shows and both the band and the crew wanted us to join them for the rest of the tour in Europe, because we really matched, but due to our studies we unfortunately couldn't. Still, a wonderful experience and the band gave each of us signed albums that I really cherish until this day. 😍

Well I applaud you manually restoring a great album. I will say that one improvement would be to use Distilled water as tap will evaporate leaving trace elements like Sodium Bicarb, iron, manganese, etc in the grooves. I use a record cleaning machine and it works wonderfully. ALso I'm fairly certain I had that title and the vinyl was laser etched.

Thanks for the vid. The advantage of soap is that it does not degrade the vinyl like detergent does. A disadvantage of soap is that it may leave a deposit on the vinyl. Not recommended. I use a Spin Clean washer - you have to manually turn the record in it. The supplied liquid that you add to water is quick drying There are a set of special brushes that you slip the record into , manually turn about 6 times and you can mount the record on top of the Spin cleaners to drip off surplus water., Next you use the drying cloths supplied to remove the rest of the water. I then use a traditional drying rack to complete the drying. An advantage of the Spin Clean liquid is it reduces antistatic charge that attracts dust to the vinyl. Incidentally, the Spin Clean received thumbs up by Project, a major turntable manufacturer.

For greater protection from dust etc you should have the open end of the inner sleeve uppermost so it’s at the top of the outer sleeve/album cover. This also helps prevent it accidentally slipping out.

the only problem with that is that one of the not-rounded corners of the inner sleeve can get bended when putting the record inside the cover, as the two round corners are on the bottom...

Nice job. I tend to prefer dry cleaning. I have an RCA Discwasher set with a microfiber brush. What I tend to do is vacuum with a soft dusting brush. I save the D4+ solution for special records. I like to do it in 4 sections following grooves with an arc as well. Lastly, my friend told me about his laser etched copy of this . I legitly thought it was going to clean up and reveal lasers. Thank you for the tips. I might incorporate a cool blowing hairdryer into future cleanings.

I use a plastic paint edger refill instead of the baby's brush. It's almost the width of the radius of the groove tracks and is also exceptionally fine - gets right down inside the grooves. Interesting idea on the hair dryer. I might have to give that a try. Thanks!

Loved hearing that great album again and watching your cleaning process. Like the others, I'd strongly suggest that your last liquid should be distilled water. Here in Florida, our water is very hard (calcium carbonate, iirc) and I never use it for cleaning purposes. Finally, I'm amazed that the YT police didn't slap you with a penalty for copyright infringement. Well done!!

I clean my albums on an old turntable using a goat hair brush. Distilled water and Kodak photo flo. I rinse the albums in the disco anti stat tank. The tank has two goat hair brushes in it. I've made improvments since my before and after video...mainly the little brush has been replaced with a wider brush. Thank you for sharing.

I finally bought a "baby brush" yesterday, because of this video. Hey- anybody reading this! Let me tell you- the second I touched the baby brush to the record, I knew it was perfect. I am 57 years old, and starting collecting records in 1970. This is the best record washing tip, of all time. I tested it. I used Dawn, soaked up a 12" single with a lot of smooth surface on it, and used the baby brush moving in every direction, for several minutes. I wanted to see if it could cause a scratch. Amazingly, it leaves no mark. I also used it, as I rinsed. Scrub scrub scrub. The result was a record so perfectly clean, it left no trace of anything on the stylus after playing. No residue. No gunk. The simple baby brush with Dawn detergent is a valuable tip. I know I will be doing it this way for the rest of my life. I used a Walmart baby brush, it cost $4. Warm tap water. Dawn dish soap. Clean towel. I did use a record vacuum, after the towel, to make sure the record was dry enough to play. In the past, I thought maybe my trouble was using tap water, and for a while I was filtering water, and using distilled water. No more. Tap water is fine. The baby brush while rinsing will remove everything. The record surface was quiet. I knew,when I heard it,that this method was perfect. I cleaned 5 albums. One was a $1 beater. Quite worn, sounded like frying chicken. After cleaning with the baby brush, that old record sounded like a $100 pristine pressing. I don't mean to be overly dramatic, but I've been at this a long time, and somewhat obsessed with wanting to find the ideal cleaning method. I have tried every tip I ever heard. The worst tip, of all time, was using WD40. ( Don't every try this,even for fun. It's not a fun experiment. You will ruin your record, and perhaps your stylus). I do like having a record vacuum, but honestly it's just not the answer for cleaning. It's nice to maintain a clean record, though. I've tried every chemical. I wish I'd have known about the baby brush method, fifty years ago. Once you try this, you will feel joyous and powerful. I don't have a baby. I had trouble finding a baby brush. You have to look in the "baby department " at Walmart, they cannot be found in the beauty section with regular hairbrushes. My thanks to the poster of this video. You have changed my life, as an old guy who washes his records in the kitchen sink and expects a transformation. I finally got the result I want. One bad thing: My house is full of records. Now, I know every one of them could be cleaner. That is a haunting thought.

I tried cleaning records in the kitchen sink, but no matter how careful you can be, the paper label always gets damaged. Instead, I recommend Groovewasher. They give you a plastic foam shield for the label, and you spray on their patented G2 cleaning fluid. With lots of passes with the pad on the turntable, the dust is 100% gone.

Hi there, ever thought of using the PVA (glue) cleaning method? There's a few demos on YT. A lot less mucking around although you do need patience to wait for it to air dry, one side at a time. Advantage of this method, is not only does it give your vinyl an as new finish, it also extracts the microscopic crud caked in the depths of the groove. Done hundreds 50s, 60s 70s LPs and 45s of my collection and a couple of hundred to go. Even works on shellac, 78s, which isn't supposed to, but it does! Never had a problem with the PVA method and the results are superb, especially recovering the ones I once, and regretfully cleaned with detergent.

The version I have was a special pressing for which they laser-etched the master before stamping the vinyl discs. The etched lines are too small to affect the phonograph needle, so they can't be heard, but hen light shines on the disc, it gives a "rainbow effect" on the image because of difraction.

I use a Vevor ultrasonic cleaner. Extremely efficient. Use water with dishwasher detergent first clean. Just water second clean. The units are extremely cheap compared to other types but the results are excellent.

@petikan Depends on the condition of the record. Probably need an anti static mat for static issues. If the record doesn't have too many deep scratches, I found the ultrasonic cleaner the best cleaning method to remove surface noise.There is no need to use brushes to clean that may cause further damage. Set the timer and head off for a cuppa or whatever the let the ultrasonic do all the hard work. I certainly noticed the difference. The model I have can fit 3 LPs at once and also came with adapters for 45s and a drying rack. I originally thought it was all hype, but now I absolutely recommend one.

I use exactly the same technique....except: I use a makeup powder brush for the washing. I couldn't find a soft baby hair brush at the time. I leave the label protector on when drying. I don't lay it down on another cloth. I use microfibre cloth to dry and I have noticed that water is held under the edge of the label protector so just hold record on edge/upright and put cloth to the edge of the label protector and you will see the water get sucked up by the cloth. I also use a hair dryer on high but keep it a couple of feet away at all times. If you do it with the sun's reflection on the record you can actually see the water disappearing. I then remove the label protector and dry whatever water is still held around protector.

I have the thingamagigger as well. The grooves are generally smaller than the stylus tip which is the smallest around 0.3mm. So a brush with bristles around that size would be needed to clean it properly. I still have not got a one yet and have been using a sponge which isn't doing a good job other than cleaning the big dusts. Also probably a good idea to do a test play before cleaning and then after cleaning. And the part that will produce alot of pops is the start. I will certainly try the brush to clean the record later today. Thanks.

The thingamagigger is a revelation. I haven't added a before sound yet as these records are so grimed up I'm concerned for the needle. I'm getting a new record player soon and will use this one for the before sound check soon. Thanks for the comments.

Yes...I have used the same method with a label protector but with the palm of my hand and Dawn dishwashing soap. I will use the brushes next time. It's a good method for flea market records you want to pick up.

Сам всегда мыл и мою пластинки под водопроводной водой, сейчас ещё стал протирать микрофиброй с нанесённым специальным антистатическим средством потуходу за пластинками. Конечно в идеале вода должна быть дистиллированой, но можно просто поставить систему фильтрации водопроводной воды. Картонный конверт, после протирания внутри, всегда дополнительно продуваю его, как раз фен тут будет кстати! ;)

Hi. Interesting method. However I use the Knosti Disco Antistat spin cleaner. Your pressing of the album is interesting as that label is scarce. I have a Paul Kelly 45 with that design. Not seen any others. Your record is an 80's pressing however the label design is an earlier version until they switched it with the more familiar Mushroom wording at bottom and track details at top. My copy has a red cover with the earlier tan labels. Cheers.

There's actually many colour variations of the sleeve released in each country not just the ones you mention. Then there's the lazer etched version and coloured vinyl re-issues.

Interesting video, well done. The comments at the beginning about Crowded House were a little weird though. I'm not sure how the All Blacks got in there but its something you clearly feel strongly about so the band can be from where ever makes you happy. For sure they had an amazing Aussie rhythm section, also amazing people like Eddie Raynor and Tim Finn (both ex split enz) joining for various albums. In truth the band members came from both countries. Pretty much an ANZAC collaboration according to the band themselves.

I Just brought a copy of this album - And when I say just, Less than an hour ago (Family Jewels, Nelson) The Blue and Orange cover, They had The Red and the Purple ones as well - Which I may Go Back for - Split Enz were a New Zealand Band, the Singers/Songwriters were New Zealanders the rest of the band don't matter.

I would use distilled water for the final rinse. Also, that brush makes me nervous! I would use a microfiber cloth or cotton cloth instead. But soap and water is all you need . No need for alcohol, windex , jet dry, or any of the other concoctions people come up with. Works great, cheap, and will never harm the record.

Actually, some chemicals are needed to remove some types of sticky material that's got stuck in the record groove, as they breakdown the composition of that extraneous matter far quicker and easily than just soap. Getting the sticky sugar content out of a record that had Coca-Cola splashed over it and it was left to dry, for example. Or a record that somehow came into contact with the sticky strip used as the seal for album sleeve protectors - I've seen that make a real mess on a record, etc. Soap itself is often not sufficient enough to remove glue-based particles, hence, why industrial alcohol is used for this. It's when buying in second-hand records that one finds all kinds of weird and wonderful gunk stick onto records and very probably not in terms of your (or my) personal collections. Having run a record shop dealing mostly with second-hand albums, I've seen it all and cleaned them all. Also, some chemicals are necessary to resolve "misting" problems where records have been affected by long-term storage in PVC record sleeves (that nobody should ever use) where the PVC gas molecules permeate from the PVC through the cardboard sleeve and onto the vinyl - that's what "misting" is, and causes playback problems. Relax! That brush is doing a great job and absolutely no damage at all, as it's vital to get into the groove to clean properly.

Have you ever tried using Mr. Sheen to clean records? I find it does a fantastic job of removing dust from the grooves. First, I wipe the record with a microfibre cloth, then rinse it under running luke warm water. Then I dry the record with a cloth before spraying both sides with Mr. Sheen. I then remove most of the Mr. Sheen with a cloth before rinsing the record under running cool water. Then I wipe the record dry.

You needn't worry about protecting the label of a 1980s or later record because they're vinalised and waterproof. I always wash them with a soft cloth to remove greasy finger marks on the occasion I've bought a second-hand album.

@@2ndchancevinyl I should have said "In 98-99% of cases". Some small Indie record companies still used paper-only labels, but easy to determine since they're exactly that of a 1960's label. I don't rub these but do rinse them off under the tap just to lift any surface dirt and dap gently with a soft towell to pick up any excess water and leave to air dry. You'll see the brightness of colour return. Occasionally, you might see some colour dye coming off, but will make no difference to the label and it's only vegetable dye which washes out - that's if your using the wife's best towels like I do!

Interesting video. Hope the tap water in your country is better than my area of the Midwest of the US. I use distilled water and a Spin Clean which works really well. A spray mix I use is just distilled water with a couple drops of Jet Dry as a surfactant. Bottom line is form your own opinion, method and formula, just continue to love your records and give them life. Thanks for sharing and enjoy! @@2ndchancevinyl the jet dri is a wetting agent. Or a Surfactant, in other terms. (Check my spelling.). Used in dishwashers to help the water run off and not leave spots. Used more where water is hard or a dishwasher doesn’t have a heating element to dry the dishes. Helps them drip dry. So it works well on vinyl on small doses.

In the UK True Colours was released on a number of colour sleeves, and in various formats of vinyl. The one i bought at Pandemonium Records here in Manchester at the time (1980) was the red sleeved limited edition lazer etched disc, on the A&M Label. Just in case anyone comes across the same but is doubtful about sound quality? It's a great looking thing and loses nothing sonically at all, unlike most picture discs from the time which very often sounded quite dull or muffled in comparison with the normal vinyl releases. The etching loosely copies the sleeve design, with geometric shapes across the vinyl and Split Colours and True Enz etched onto both sides...Not sure that cleaning method would work so well on my copy, given what it is?

I owned several copies of True Colors (US) and found that the laser etched versions were slightly noisier. Not by much, but I could detect it. I finally found a non-etched version. LOVE this album and all the memories it brings back to this old guy!

@@morrisonAV perhaps that was due to the vinyl quality used when processing, or maybe the masters that were used at the production plants over in the States were different to those here in the UK? But it does occur that the lazer etching process would've been done on normal vinyl, but at the very end of the process, but as I said previously, to my ears there was no markedly different quality in the sound output to the normal vinyl, and perhaps it's simply that everyone hears things slightly differently? Anyway, as you rightly say, great album and full of memories of a bygone age...If you get the chance, give their 76 Chrysalis release, "Mental Notes" a listen, nowhere near as polished as True Colours, but a good album non the less.

@@2ndchancevinyl Yes, from Manchester...To answer your question, they weren't huge, but during the early 80s had some good chart success over here which got them noticed. "I Got You" was their big break obviously and charted pretty well and broke the top twenty, but they followed that up with "I Hope I Never" and "Nobody Takes Me Seriously" which i thought were both equally as good, but didn't chart so well. Their B sides were superb tunes too, particularly the instrumental track "Choral Sea", which stands out for me. However, they built up a good solid fanbase here I think. It's also fair to say that they kind of led the way for other, lesser known Antipodean groups over here, as apart from the epically awsome AC/DC, not many from that part of the world were that well known and didn't venture here very often. However, after Split Enz had led the way, other bands like Icehouse, and most notably Men At Work were really well received. Whisper it quietly, but unlike the rest of the planet, i wasn't very keen on the latter, but Icehouse's debut single "Hey Little Girl" was a cracking tune, which i immediately bought on clear vinyl, but sadly they didn't do much afterwards and seemed to disappear? True Colours was the standout release by Split Enz, which obviously led to the Finn brothers later successes globally, just a shame they couldn't keep it together as Split Enz. incidentally, the lazer etching of vinyl thing, was something I first came across on a Styx single before i bought my copy of True Colours, but I'm not sure who did it first, but was told it may have had something to do with counterfitting, which doesn't make a lot of sense as most people bought the normal vinyl anyway...Be well and keep up the good work.

@@2ndchancevinyl Not at all big by much actually. They had just one top-twent single, I Got You got to #12, nothing else broke the top fifty. True Colours got to #38 on the album chart. Time and Tide bombed at #71. And that was it and a minor footnote for a very brief period over here.

Soaked dirt (dust rammed down over the years) from sound tracks you will not get with a brush and a towel ! It is better to dry the vinyl record after washing (and suck out all the compacted dirt) with a vacuum cleaner by wrapping the nozzle with microfiber .

I can only applaud you're restoring your precious vinyl records, but please consider to change a few things: never use dishwasher soap or anything like, only vinyl cleaning solutions; use distilled water only (you can use tap water with cleaning solutions, but I recommend a second rinse with only distilled water); don't use a hairdryer even if you keep moving it, it won't warp your records but can damage the grooves! use a dry rack instead; when you put the record bag into the sleeve, rotate the inner sleeve counter clockwise (opening up), it prevents dust building up easily if you have both sleeve openings facing the same side.
