When cleaning anything, I recommend spraying the cloth, not the item...allows liquid to absorb into cloth and not saturate your item which can cause damage

For years now I have cleaned all my vintage hardcover books outside boards with an olive oil saturated paper towel, and a good scrubbing. Not only does it wash away decades old dirt and grime, but it seems to lube board hinges that have dried out after decades of existence.

@@Orange-Jumpsuit-Time Dee, thank you for catching my comment, I have not tried this technique and I am anxious to try it. I get my "test books" from a small book shop that has a 50 cent sale day once a week. Plus they will sometimes give me books they can't sell. So your technique suggestion is very timely. Thank you very much. Happy Booking

@@c123bthunderpig Thanks for commenting, you're going to find that the olive oil makes the book all shiny, which will be pleasing to the eye, but it will be only temporary and the book will revert back to its previous state but will have been cleaned. I don't see where the olive oil was absorbed into the boards so my best guess it evaporates within a day? I know there's some products in the UK for book cleaning, EASI-CLEAN BOOK CLOTH CLEANER, Backus Bookcloth Cleaner, but I also know that the manufacturers advise to use sparingly as they remove some of the dye on the boards. With olive oil there is no dye removal, maybe those other products can be used on a worst case condition?

@@Orange-Jumpsuit-Time Dee thanks so much for this bit of follow up, it really helps. The cloth degradation has been my biggest roadblock to restoring, I can't quite say " conservation" I like to restore a book to readable condition. True conservationists would faint if they saw my work. I have come a long way in text block repair, hinge repair and dust jacket, end pages and paste downs are a nemesis, however, the cloth is like climbing Mt Everest. The very last resort is of course just redoing the cover with new cloth, but you almost always lose the graphics. Ink is a problem depending on era, and yes dye loss is a big problem too. I might eventually have to try those chemicals you mention, They are a tad expensive but I may have to save my milk money and try :-) As the weekend approaches I am gathering a few test books and will give it a go. Maybe there is something we can add to the oil to help at least encapsulate the fabric. I have tried art/ poster paints but that is horrible looking. Thanks again.

The term ‘foxing’ describes disfiguring small yellow brown spots or blotches on paper. Two main causes are mould and iron contaminants in the paper. Moulds feed on the paper itself, as well as any dirt or organic material on it.

If you buy one thru the mail and the seller did not mention it, thats grounds to send it back(they are trying to rid themselves of a problem so give it back). They usually send you a printable label. then if that does not work, leave a nasty feedback and report them. I do not sell smelly or mildrew books they belong in the trash for me. Foxing(light brown or yellow color) they are age relating to improper storage is a reaction to minerals in the paper. I'm not sure what will remove it( I don't do anything to books because I lost a $2500 book because I damaged it) and foxing(it is usually not live) I do sell but I mention it but there has to be no smell. UV light like sunlight/light bulbs kills foxing and mold but can fade colors. Smells can be drained from books using cat litter. before putting the book in a larger baggie make sure it has litter in the bottom, then put the book in and surround it with kitty litter, seal the bag. Some people use heat like lowest setting on a stove oven(I have never done it) I would think it needs to be set on something as not to leave marks and leave it like 3 hours. I put all books in baggies myself and store them in watertight bins. One thing to remember about that is not to take them in or out enough temp changes to cause condensation everything condensates you may not see it. When you 1st notice the smell put it in a resealable baggie so as not to have the spores roaming around you house. Mold or mildew can cause illness.

Why clean---when all you are doing is transferring grim, spores, unknowns from the filthy, dirty micro cloth back to all the books. Why don't you invest in paper towel to wipe down the spritzed book. It makes me wonder what spores are on your hands--don't shake my hand. Would you clean your face with a wash cloth that has been used on a hundred other faces??? Also, do you grade for moldy smell??
@rickboze6200
@rickboze6200 3 жыл бұрын
Grade moldy smell? Its Acceptable for the TRASH. It is a bio hazard, would you allow it to stay in your home and spread spores to your lungs? I don't see how to clean foxed pages, cloth covers, paper dustjacket. This was either something you did on a dare or you believe you did something very usable. Remove pencil prices? use an eraser maybe. Clean the outside of Trade softback not paper but bonded wraps, alcohol paper towels, and you use a cloth RAG?

If you put the books in plastic bags and put them in the freezer for a one week minimum and then use sandpaper to buff out the foxing you’re good. The foxing is just cosmetic at this point because the cold from the freezer kills everything. If there is still a smell, and there might be, put dryer sheets in the book. I also use goo gone for stickers that won’t come clean off but you have to be careful and keep checking every few seconds because it can take out the color.
