cleaning cedar siding with oxiclean without a pressure washer

This is a cedar shake siding restoration job we did in Rhode Island. If you go to the very end of the video you will see a completed photo when the wood is dry. When you use oxi clean to clean the cedar shake it will make the wood darker. This is because the Oxiclean oxygenates the wood or oxidizes it.
For this we just use a pump sprayer to spray on the Oxiclean. Then we use a garden hose to rinse off the cedar shakes and you’ll see a bunch of dark liquid coming off. This is all the dirt and oil’s that actually clean out of the siding.

A lot of people stop here but if you want the wood to be nice and bright like the original color you need to use a wood Breitner which can also be applied with a pump sprayer. For this we use citrus-based wood brightener. You can watch it bright and the wood In only a few seconds.

Looks pretty again! What's the oldest age of shingles you are able to clean and brighten? How long can natural cedar shingles last on a house (unstained) before needing replacement? Would like to utilize your cleaning methods instead of ever staining them.

Zimmerman, Oxiclean is NOT sodium hydroxide!!! Sodium hydroxides is highly caustic which is why it's called caustic soda (or lye) and used in drain unblockers such Draino. Oxiclean however, is sodium percarbonate which releases sodium peroxide when mixed with water, and is fairly safe.

Yes, sodium hydroxide is lye, it's what is used to make bar soap. Mixed with water it gets very very hot and will chemical burn you if it gets on you. Very different. Neutralise with vinegar if you ever need to rinse it off you.

That looks really great, awesome job. You mentioned you used sodium hydroxide. What mix ratio and what kind of soap or surfactant did you use? Also, you didn't use any bleach on that did you?

Turk Red no bleach, doesn’t use much sodium hydroxide if it doesn’t clean enough hit with second does of sodium hydroxide before you use brightner

I would have done it at 3% sodium hypochlorite. Pre wet everything apply the chemical and then rinse the crap out of it immediately after. A lot faster and easier that way.

You should ditch the hydrixode on a house. That is an enemy to a lot of materials, and your rinse definitely is leaving residue behind to torment those homeowners in a season or two. You are much better off with SH or Sodium Percarbonate. Keep the caustic on the ground 99% of the time.
